Chargebacks for Fitness Brands: Thresholds, Prevention and Alerts Setup
Visa and Mastercard chargeback limits for fitness brands in 2026, dispute rules for equipment and nutrition subscriptions, and how to prevent them.
Article summary
TL;DR
Visa and Mastercard both flag merchants at 1.5% in 2026. For a fitness brand, most disputes don't come from stolen cards: they come from heavy equipment that arrives late, damaged or not as pictured, and from sports nutrition subscriptions customers forget. Full-address delivery proof, clear return instructions, honest ship dates and renewal reminders prevent most of them.
- Visa flags US merchants at 1.5% and 1,500 fraud reports plus disputes a month; Mastercard at 1.5% and 100 chargebacks (Stripe Docs, read November 2, 2026).
- Mastercard fines start in month two at $1,000 and reach $100,000 a month from month 19.
- To answer a Visa "not received" dispute, tracking with a partial address isn't accepted: you need the full delivery address (Visa rules, October 24, 2026).
- Without a stated ship date, the FTC expects you to ship within 30 days, or offer the buyer the choice to wait or cancel for a refund.
- Visa requires a notice at least 7 days before a trial or intro price ends (Visa rules, April 18, 2026).

The thresholds in 2026
Both networks start at 1.5%, but they don't count the same things. Visa adds fraud reports to disputes; Mastercard divides this month's chargebacks by last month's sales1Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
Mastercard's fines grow the longer you stay above the line: $0 in month one, $1,000 in months two and three, $5,000 from month four, up to $100,000 a month from month 19 at the ECM level1Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026. You exit after 3 consecutive months below the threshold1Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.

Watch out
A won dispute still counts. Stripe says monitoring programs "don't consider dispute outcomes"1Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026. Prevention matters more than winning.

Where fitness disputes come from
A fitness brand sells three very different things, and each has its own dispute pattern.
| What you sell | Typical dispute | Visa category | First fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home gym equipment (racks, treadmills, benches) | Late or missing delivery, damaged in transit | 13.1 Not received, 13.3 Not as described3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769) | Ship dates you can keep, full-address proof, signature |
| Fitness accessories (bands, mats, weights) | "Not as described", unrecognized charge | 13.3, 10.4 fraud | Accurate photos and specs, clear descriptor |
| Sports nutrition on subscription (protein, pre-workout) | Forgotten renewal, cancelled but still billed | 13.2 Cancelled recurring | Reminders, online cancellation |
| Workout programs and digital content | "Not as described", friendly fraud | 13.3, 10.4 | Access logs, terms at checkout |
The reason code tells you what the customer claims and what evidence answers it. Codes one by one: chargeback reason codes.

Home gym equipment

Visa 13.2. What wins: consent at checkout, the reminder you sent, no cancellation on file.
Workout programs and digital content
Visa 13.3 and 10.4. What wins: access logs and the terms shown at checkout.
Each one is won with a different record.
Heavy equipment: "not received" and "not as described"
These two Visa codes decide most equipment disputes, and both are winnable if your records are complete3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769).
13.1 Merchandise not received. If you gave no delivery date, the issuer must wait 15 calendar days from the transaction date before filing. The dispute can come up to 120 days after the transaction or the last expected delivery date3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769). A cancellation before the expected delivery date (buyer's remorse) or a quality complaint isn't a valid 13.1 dispute3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769).
13.3 Not as described or defective. The cardholder must return, or try to return, the item. An attempted return only counts if you refused it, didn't answer, or "did not provide clear instructions on how to return"3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769). The amount is limited to the value of what was returned3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769).
What wins each case:
- For 13.1: proof of delivery that contains the full delivery address. Visa states "tracking with partial address is not permitted"3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769).
- For 13.3: a written return policy with clear steps, a return authorization or label process, and records that you answered.
- For high-value items: Stripe recommends requiring a signature on delivery "to prevent missing packages or potential friendly fraud"1Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
Example
A customer disputes a $1,400 treadmill as "not received". The carrier's proof shows the city and ZIP code only. Under Visa's rule, that proof isn't enough. A white-glove delivery receipt with the full address and a signature is.

Full-address proof

Meets Visa's evidence rule: respond
The proof decides the case, not the carrier.
Damaged-on-arrival claims are the gray zone. If the customer can return the rack and you refuse or stay silent, the dispute counts as valid3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769). Answer every damage claim in writing and send return or replacement instructions the same day.
Shipping delays and backorders
The FTC rule on mail and internet orders applies to every equipment sale. If you don't state a ship date, you must have "a reasonable basis for believing that you can ship within 30 days"4FTC, Business Guide to the Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, September 2011 (penalty amounts updated January 2025).
If you can't ship on time, you must offer the buyer "an option either to consent to a delay in shipping or to cancel the buyer's order and receive a prompt refund"4FTC, Business Guide to the Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, September 2011 (penalty amounts updated January 2025).
That matters each January, when demand for home gym equipment peaks and stock runs out.
- Show the real ship date on the product page, not just "in stock".
- Mark backorders or remove the item: Stripe lists both as dispute prevention1Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- Email the delay with a one-click choice: wait or cancel.
- Refund cancelled card orders within one billing cycle when you're the creditor4FTC, Business Guide to the Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, September 2011 (penalty amounts updated January 2025).

Sports nutrition subscriptions
Protein and pre-workout refills bring the classic subscription disputes: a renewal the customer forgot, or one they believe they cancelled.

| Reminder before renewals | Stripe guidance1Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026 | 7 days before a yearly renewal, 2 to 3 days before a monthly one |
Claims also feed "not as described" disputes. The FTC warns that testimonials reporting results "more dramatic than users can generally expect are likely to be deceptive", and that "Results not typical" doesn't fix it9FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance, December 2022. A product sold on a promise invites a dispute when the promise isn't met. Trial rules in detail: trial offers for fitness brands.
Respond or refund?
Fight only the cases your records answer. Once a dispute is open, you can't refund outside it: you accept or respond6Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read October 14, 2026.
| Situation | Best move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Alert received before a dispute | Refund | Excluded from Visa's count1Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026 |
| 13.1 with full-address, signed proof of delivery | Respond | Meets Visa's evidence rule3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769) |
| 13.1 with partial tracking only | Accept, fix the carrier setup | Visa won't accept it3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769) |
| 13.3 where you sent clear return steps and got no return | Respond | The customer didn't meet the return condition3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 (p. 752 to 760) and 13.3 (p. 767 to 769) |
| Renewal after a cancellation you can't disprove | Accept, fix the flow | You'd lose, and pay the fee twice |
- An alert before a disputeThe customer called the bank; no chargeback yet.Refund: it stays out of Visa's count.
- A 13.1 dispute on a large orderThe customer says the item never arrived.Respond only with full-address, signed proof of delivery.
- A 13.2 dispute on a refillA renewal the customer says they cancelled.Accept if you can't disprove the cancellation, then fix the flow.
Alerts: the step before the chargeback
Alerts tell you a customer is disputing before it becomes a chargeback, so you can refund first. Disputes resolved through Verifi RDR or Ethoca Alerts don't count in your dispute rate at Stripe7Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026, and Visa leaves pre-dispute resolutions out of its VAMP ratio2Visa, Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program fact sheet, 2025.
For a fitness brand, they work best on low-ticket subscription refills. On a $1,400 machine, an automatic refund is a costly reflex: route those alerts to a manual review. Setup, rules and costs: chargeback alerts for fitness brands.
What never to do
- Don't spread volume across accounts to stay under a threshold. Stripe lists evading card network chargeback monitoring programs among prohibited uses8Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026.
- Don't ship without tracking on anything you'd want to defend.
- Don't promise results in ads or on the product page: it's an FTC issue first9FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance, December 2022, and a dispute reason second.
- Don't reprocess a disputed payment.
Stolen cards on first orders are a separate fight: fraud prevention and 3D Secure for fitness brands.
