Bundles and Quantity Breaks for Fitness Brands: Pricing and Discounts

How fitness brands price home gym kits, accessory quantity breaks and sports nutrition tiers: discount depth after freight, FTC price rules, returns.

Article summary

TL;DR

Fitness brands use three bundle structures: a home gym kit sold as one product, quantity breaks on accessories, and supply tiers on sports nutrition. Set each discount on the contribution left after product, freight and returns. Show a "was" price only if you really charged it, and say upfront how a partial return of a kit is refunded.

  • Equipment and sports nutrition start from very different orders: $138.48 median for "Sports & Outdoor" vs. $66 for "Health & Wellness" (Polar Analytics, August 2026).
  • On heavy equipment, freight can eat the whole bundle discount. Model contribution per kit before you set the percentage.
  • A "was" price must be "the actual, bona fide price" offered "for a reasonably substantial period of time" (16 CFR 233.1).
  • In a Visa "not as described" dispute, the refund is limited to the value of the merchandise returned (Visa rules, October 2026).
  • A sports nutrition bundle on subscription needs clear terms and express consent before billing (ROSCA).

This guide is part of our playbook on the best ecommerce platform for fitness brands. Bundles are one of the levers in how to increase AOV for a fitness brand.

The 3 bundle structures for fitness brands

Accessory quantity breaksBands, mats or kettlebells: 2 items 10% off, 3 items 15% offItems bought as sets or in several sizesMargin on low-price items
Sports nutrition supply tiers1 tub / 2 tubs / 3 tubs, falling price per servingProtein powder, pre-workoutExpiry dates, subscription rules6Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403

A fourth option sits between the first two: build your own kit, where the discount grows with the number of items in the cart. It suits brands with many modular pieces.

  1. Home gym kit

Rack + barbell + plates + collars, one price. Watch freight, multi-box delivery and partial returns.

  2. Accessory quantity breaks

Bands, mats or kettlebells: 2 items 10% off, 3 items 15% off. Watch the margin on low-price items.

  3. Sports nutrition supply tiers

1 tub / 2 tubs / 3 tubs, falling price per serving. Watch expiry dates and subscription rules.

Structures from the table above.

How deep should the discount go?

A deeper discount lowers your margin rate. On equipment, freight decides whether the bundle still pays.

Illustrative figures: a rack, barbell and plates cost you $560 in product and sell for $1,200 bought separately. Freight for the kit is $180; shipped as three separate orders, it would be $260.

  3. Kit, 20% off220 USD

Source: Illustrative figures from the table above

The kit saves freight; each extra 10 points of discount costs $120 per kit.

Illustrative example.

What the table shows:

  • The kit saves you freight, which pays for part of the discount.
  • Each extra 10 points of discount costs $120 per kit in this example.
  • "Free shipping" is not free: it is the same freight, now inside your contribution.

For sports nutrition, the math looks like supplement tiers: the bigger the order, the lower your shipping per tub. Keep tier 1 at full price so the others have a clear baseline.

Watch out

A 20% badge on the product card next to a "save 15%" banner on the same page makes buyers doubt both numbers. Show one discount, the same way everywhere.

Present the bundle so the choice is easy

  • List every item in the kit, with weight and dimensions.
  • Show the bundle price, the total of the items, and the saving in dollars.
  • Three tiers at most for accessories and nutrition; highlight the middle one only if it is truly the most chosen.
  • Show delivery terms on the bundle: number of boxes, freight or parcel, assembly.
  • Show warranty terms per item: written warranties on consumer products over $15 must be available before the sale5FTC, Businessperson's Guide to Federal Warranty Law, December 2006, updated March 2018.
  • Let buyers swap a piece (plate weight, bar length) without leaving the bundle.

Example

"Starter kit: rack, 7 ft bar, 100 kg plates, collars. $960 (items separately: $1,200, save $240). Ships in 3 boxes. Each item keeps its own warranty."

Price claims the FTC cares about

Kit pages are full of struck-through prices. Two FTC guides apply directly.

ClaimRule
"Was $1,200, now $960"The former price must be "the actual, bona fide price" offered to the public "for a reasonably substantial period of time" (16 CFR 233.1)216 CFR 233.1, Former price comparisons, read October 26, 2026
"Compare at" a price never chargedIf the former price is not genuine, the bargain is "a false one" (16 CFR 233.1)216 CFR 233.1, Former price comparisons, read October 26, 2026
"Free bands with any rack"Not free if you raise the regular price, cut quantity or quality, or add hidden conditions; state all terms upfront (16 CFR 233.4)316 CFR 233.4, Bargain offers based upon the purchase of other merchandise, read October 26, 2026

Comparing the kit price with the sum of the items you sell separately, at their real prices, is the simplest honest comparison.

  1. Was $1,200, now $960The former price must be the actual, bona fide price, offered for a reasonably substantial period (16 CFR 233.1).A former price you really charged.
  2. Compare at a price never chargedIf the former price is not genuine, the bargain is a false one (16 CFR 233.1).The sum of the items you sell separately, at their real prices.
  3. Free bands with any rackNot free if you raise the regular price, cut quantity or quality, or add hidden conditions (16 CFR 233.4).All terms, stated upfront.

Shipping, returns and disputes on bundles

A kit is one order but often several boxes. That changes how you prove delivery and handle returns.

  1. Track every box. In a Visa "not received" dispute, the merchant needs "proof of delivery that contains the full delivery address"4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 and 13.3. One missing box can mean a dispute on the whole order.
  2. Write the partial return rule on the bundle page. For example: a returned item is refunded at its share of the bundle price, not its single-item price.
  3. Give clear return instructions. Under Visa's "not as described" condition, a return attempt counts if the merchant "did not provide clear instructions on how to return", and the amount is limited to the value of the merchandise returned4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute conditions 13.1 and 13.3.
  4. Keep each item's warranty visible after the sale, in the order confirmation.

One order, several boxes: prove each delivery and say how returns work.

Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments. More on disputes: chargebacks for fitness brands.

Sports nutrition bundles and subscriptions

A subscription on one tub discounts a small order. A subscription on a 2-tub bundle keeps the order larger and ships less often.

Test the tiers

  • Test one thing at a time: discount depth, number of tiers, or which tier is highlighted.
  • Judge on contribution per visitor, after freight and returns, not on bundle take rate.
  • Watch partial returns on kits for 60 days after the test.

Method: A/B testing for fitness brands.

Frequently asked questions

How much discount should a home gym bundle have?

Enough to make the kit the obvious choice, and no more than your contribution after product, freight and returns can carry. One home gym store we checked showed 20% off its kits in November 2026, but the right number is the one that keeps contribution per kit above what the items earn sold separately.

Should I offer free shipping on fitness equipment bundles?

Only if you priced the freight into the kit. "Free shipping" moves the carrier cost into your margin; it does not remove it. Show the delivery terms on the bundle (boxes, freight or parcel, assembly) so the buyer knows what to expect.

Can I show a "compare at" price on my bundles?

Yes, if it is the real total of the items at prices you actually charge. The FTC says a former price must be "the actual, bona fide price" offered "for a reasonably substantial period of time". A price you never charged makes the saving "a false one".

What happens if a customer returns part of a bundle?

Your policy decides, so write it on the bundle page before the sale. A common rule refunds the item at its share of the bundle price. Give clear return instructions: Visa counts a return attempt as valid when the merchant did not provide them.

Should protein powder bundles be sold on subscription?

They can be. A 2-tub bundle on a 2-month cycle keeps the order larger and ships less often than a 1-tub monthly plan. Use one discount per order, and show the renewal terms and get express consent before billing.
