How to Increase AOV for a Fitness Brand

Raise average order value on fitness equipment and sports nutrition: accessories, bundles, order bumps, upsells and shipping thresholds, with data.

Article summary

TL;DR

Sell what completes the first purchase. On equipment, offer the accessories a buyer needs to use it (plates, collars, a mat) on the product page or as an order bump. On sports nutrition, offer multi-packs and a refill subscription. Add a post-purchase upsell that changes with the cart value, and set a free shipping threshold above your median order.

  • Median AOV is $138.48 in Polar's "Sports & Outdoor" category and $66 in "Health & Wellness" (August 2026).
  • Post-purchase upsells convert at 4.7% on average (ReConvert, 2023 data) and 16.2% for merchants who optimize them (Zipify, July 2026).
  • A gym equipment seller reported a 68% AOV increase after adding accessory add-ons on product pages, in a vendor case study.
  • 40% of shoppers who abandon checkout cite extra costs such as shipping (Baymard, September 2025).
  • Stripe's restricted list names businesses that "use high-pressure upselling" (read November 2026).

Where your AOV stands

Fitness brands start from very different baskets. Polar Analytics reports a $138.48 median AOV in "Sports & Outdoor" and $66 in "Health & Wellness" (August 2026)1Polar Analytics, Ecommerce benchmarks, last updated August 25, 2026. Grips Intelligence shows home fitness equipment at $300 to $400 (September 2026)2Grips Intelligence, Home fitness equipment, September 2026 figures, read November 2, 2026.

So "increase AOV" means two different jobs:

  • Equipment brands already have a high ticket. The goal is to complete the setup in one order, not to discount.
  • Sports nutrition brands have a low first order. The goal is a bigger first basket and a second order on schedule.

Compare your own numbers by product line first: fitness brand benchmarks.

The 6 levers, by product type

Each lever works differently on equipment and on nutrition. Pick the ones that fit your catalog.

Equipment: accessories, sets and protection

A buyer who orders a rack still needs plates, collars and a floor mat. Offering them before payment saves a second order and a second delivery.

  • Show what the buyer needs to use the product, not what is on sale. Accessories that are "required to start" convert best.
  • Build kits by goal, such as a "starter garage gym", with one price and one shipment.
  • Offer the add-ons on the product page, where the buyer is still choosing the setup.

Example

Blazzed Fitness, a gym equipment seller, added accessories such as handles, weight plates and floor mats as add-ons on each equipment product page. Kefi Commerce, the vendor of the tool, reports a 68% increase in AOV and $366,023 in bundle revenue "in just a few months"5Kefi Commerce, Blazzed Fitness case study, vendor-published, undated, read November 2, 2026. It is a vendor case study with no stated method.

Keep a check on shipping. Two heavy items can cost more to ship than one larger kit. Kits and price points are detailed in bundles and quantity breaks for fitness brands.

Sports nutrition: multi-packs and refills

On protein and pre-workout, the order value grows with quantity and time.

Keep product pages to taste, format and ingredients. Results claims put the payment account at risk: see fitness product payment processing. Subscription setup is covered in subscription billing for fitness brands.

Order bump or post-purchase upsell?

Use both, for different offers. The order bump is a small add-on before payment; the upsell is a bigger offer right after.

An upsell can also change with the order. Tagada's docs show a post-purchase offer that switches on the cart total, with a $50 threshold in the example8Tagada docs, Cart value upsell, read November 2, 2026. For fitness, that means an accessory on a small order and a premium item on a large one.

Free shipping thresholds

Extra costs are the first reason for checkout abandonment: 40% of shoppers cite "Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees)" (Baymard, September 2025)6Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025.

  • Set the threshold above your median order, so a typical buyer adds one item to reach it.
  • Show the gap in the cart ("$18 away from free shipping").
  • Heavy equipment is different. Freight costs can exceed any accessory margin, so state delivery cost early instead of using a threshold.

What not to do

Some ways to raise AOV cost you the payment account or the customer.

  • Pre-checked bumps. Some tools allow it. Do not use it: Stripe names "high-pressure upselling" in its restricted list7Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026, and the buyer should add the item by choice.
  • Results claims in the offer. Any promise about what the bundle does for the body turns an upsell into a product claim. Describe contents, quantity and price.
  • Hidden subscription. A refill must be clearly chosen, with the price and cadence shown before payment.
  • Discounts on every order. A permanent discount lowers margin more than it raises AOV.

Watch out

A refill added without clear consent comes back as disputes. Trial and subscription rules are on the payment side: trial offers for fitness brands.

In what order to set it up

Start with the levers that do not touch conversion.

  1. Measure AOV by product line, equipment and nutrition apart.
  2. Add a post-purchase upsell, which only shows after payment.
  3. Add one order bump with a low-price, obvious add-on.
  4. Build 2 or 3 kits or multi-packs for your best sellers.
  5. Set a free shipping threshold on accessories and nutrition.
  6. Test each change against the current checkout: A/B testing for fitness brands.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good AOV for a fitness brand?

It depends on what you sell. Polar Analytics reports a $138.48 median in Sports & Outdoor and $66 in Health & Wellness, the category closest to sports nutrition (August 2026). Grips shows home fitness equipment at $300 to $400. Compare by product line, not with a blended number.

What should I upsell with gym equipment?

What the buyer needs to use it: plates and collars with a bar, a floor mat with a rack, attachments with a cable machine. Offer them on the product page or as an order bump before payment. Keep heavy add-ons in the same shipment when you can, so delivery costs do not cancel the gain.

Do bundles increase AOV for supplements and protein?

Usually, when the bundle is a real saving on a product the buyer will use again, such as 2 or 3 tubs. Pair it with a refill subscription for the second order. Avoid wording that suggests the bundle gives better results: that is a product claim. See bundles and quantity breaks.

Are post-purchase upsells worth it for fitness brands?

Yes, because they show after payment and cannot lower conversion. ReConvert reports a 4.7% average acceptance rate (2023 data), and Zipify 16.2% for merchants who optimize their offers (July 2026). A refill, a second flavor or a matching accessory usually fits best.

Is a free shipping threshold worth it for heavy equipment?

Rarely. Freight on a rack or a treadmill can exceed the margin on any add-on. Show the delivery cost early instead, since 40% of abandoning shoppers cite extra costs. Thresholds work better on accessories and nutrition, where shipping is cheap.
