One-Click Upsells: How Post-Purchase Offers Work and the Rules Behind Them

How one-click upsells work: the funnel after payment, the second charge on a stored card, 3D Secure, Shopify and WooCommerce limits, consent and metrics.

Article summary

TL;DR

A one-click upsell (or 1-click upsell) is an offer shown right after the buyer pays, before the thank-you page. One click adds the product and charges the card saved during checkout, with no card entry. If the buyer declines, a cheaper downsell can follow. It only works if the card was stored with the buyer's consent, and most platforms skip it when the buyer paid with a wallet or an installment service.

  • An order bump is added before the payment. A one-click upsell comes after it and creates a second charge, or an added amount, on the card the buyer just used.
  • The funnel after payment is a short graph: accepted leads to the next offer, declined to a cheaper downsell, then the thank-you page. One offer, one fallback and one second offer is plenty.
  • No stored card, no one click. The card must be saved with consent at the first payment, and the offer screen must show what will be charged and to which card.
  • The upsell is a new customer-initiated payment. In the EEA and UK it needs Strong Customer Authentication unless the issuer accepts an exemption, so the offer page must handle 3D Secure.
  • Shopify shows post-purchase offers only on vaulted cards: no Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna or Affirm, and at most three accepted offers per checkout.
  • A subscription upsell needs its own consent, and you should measure take rate, added revenue against a holdout, and the refund and dispute rates of upsold items, not clicks.

A one-click upsell is the offer that appears between the payment and the thank-you page: one button, no card form, the product is added to the order. The page is the easy part. Behind the button sits a second charge on a card the buyer saved a minute earlier, and that charge has rules: consent, authentication, payment method limits, and a statement line the buyer has to recognize. This guide covers both sides, from the funnel of offers after payment to the second charge. For supplement and skincare brands, see By industry.

What is a one-click upsell?

A one-click upsell (also written 1-click upsell, or called a post-purchase upsell) is an offer shown after the buyer's payment is approved. Accepting it adds the product to the order and charges the same card, without asking for card details again. On Shopify, the post-purchase page appears "after the order is confirmed, but before the Thank you page".1Shopify Dev Docs, Post-purchase product offers

  3. Offer pageOne product, one price, Add or Decline
  4. Second chargeStored card, only if accepted
  5. Thank-you pageBoth items, both amounts

the first order is already paid

Typical flow. A cheaper downsell can follow a decline: see the funnel below.

The test is simple. If the buyer has to type a card number again, it isn't a one-click upsell, it's a second checkout. And if the buyer never agreed to have their card stored, you can't charge it again, one click or not.

One-click upsell vs order bump vs pre-purchase upsell vs cross-sell

These four get mixed up. What separates them is when the offer appears and whether it creates a new charge.

When it appearsWhat gets chargedCard stored?Risk to the first sale
Order bumpOn the checkout page, before PayAdded to the first paymentNot neededCan distract from paying
Pre-purchase upsellProduct page, cart or checkout, before PayReplaces or upgrades the item in the first paymentNot neededCan delay the decision

Cross-sellAnywhere: product page, cart, email after deliveryA new purchaseNot neededDepends on where it's shown

An order bump is a checkbox ("Add a refill for $9") that joins the first payment. A pre-purchase upsell swaps the item for a bigger one before payment: Stripe Checkout's subscription upsells, for example, let a buyer switch from a monthly to a yearly price of the same product before paying.10Stripe Docs, Subscription upsells (Checkout) A cross-sell suggests a related product, not a bigger version, and can come at any time. In-cart offers are covered in our guide to the upsell cart drawer.

Most stores combine them. The choice comes down to the offer: a small, obvious add-on fits an order bump; a product that needs its own picture and a sentence of explanation fits the post-purchase page. Where both sit in the page you build is covered in our guide to the custom ecommerce checkout.

Upsell, downsell, second offer: the funnel after payment

A post-purchase funnel is a short graph, not a single page. Each offer has two exits: the buyer accepts or declines. Where each exit leads is the whole design.

Fig. 2What happens after each answer

Offer 1: 3-month supply, $59Shown right after the first payment is approved
  1. AcceptedSecond charge, then Offer 2: a matching product
  2. DeclinedDownsell: 1 extra month, $24
  3. Downsell acceptedCharge, then Offer 2
  4. Downsell declinedStraight to the thank-you page

the thank-you page is always the last step

Typical post-purchase funnel. Illustrative products and prices.
  • Upsell. The first offer: more of the same, a bigger size or the missing piece. It's the one most buyers see, so it gets your best offer.
  • Downsell. Shown only after a decline. It's a cheaper version of the same idea (one extra month instead of three, the same item at a lower price), not a different product. A buyer who said no to $59 may say yes to $24.
  • Second offer. Shown after an accept, or after an accepted downsell. A product that goes with what's now in the order.
  • Thank-you page. Always the end. It lists every item and every charge, so the buyer can match them with the confirmation email and the bank statement.

How many steps? One upsell, one downsell, and at most one second offer. Each screen delays the order confirmation, and a buyer who feels stuck in offers is the one who disputes later. Shopify caps consecutive offers at three, and allows up to three accepted offers per checkout.2Shopify Dev Docs, UX for post-purchase product offers1Shopify Dev Docs, Post-purchase product offers

Funnel tools model this as steps joined by conditional links. In Tagada's funnel builder, for example, an offer step has one exit for offer.accepted and one for offer.declined, and the default pattern runs landing, checkout, offer, downsell, second offer, thank you.18Tagada Docs, Upsell and downsell funnel, read November 2, 202619Tagada Docs, Funnel demos (basic post-purchase, cart value, geo, VIP tags), read November 2, 2026 Whatever the tool, test the declined path as carefully as the accepted one: a decline must never block the way to the thank-you page.

Pick the offer by order, country or customer

The same offer for every buyer is the simple version. The funnel can also choose the first offer from what it already knows at the moment of payment.

  1. A large cart (say $50 or more)A premium upsell: the buyer already showed intentOrder total above a threshold
  2. A small cartAn easy add-on under $10Fallback when the threshold isn't met
  3. A given product in the orderIts refill, its larger size or its missing pieceOrder contains this product
  4. The buyer's countryAn offer you can ship and price locallyCountry, or region such as the EU
  5. A CRM tag (VIP, repeat buyer)A members-only offer instead of a welcome priceCustomer has this tag
  6. The traffic sourceThe offer that matches the ad they clickedUTM source

Two rules keep this safe. When several conditions match, a priority decides: the most specific rule wins. And one link with no condition catches everyone else, so no buyer ends on an empty page. In Tagada's funnel demos, a cart-value funnel sends orders of $50 or more to a $39 upsell and the rest to a $9 add-on, a geo funnel shows a different offer to US, EU and other visitors, and a tag funnel gives buyers tagged vip a members-only offer; in each, the highest-priority matching link wins and an always link is the safety net.19Tagada Docs, Funnel demos (basic post-purchase, cart value, geo, VIP tags), read November 2, 2026

Country matters for more than the offer. An EU or UK buyer is more likely to see a 3D Secure challenge on the second charge (see below), and a cross-border add-on can bring its own shipping cost and delay, which belong on the offer screen.

How a one-click upsell charges the card

The one click works because the first payment did two things: it charged the card and it saved it. The upsell reuses that saved card.

no card entry, but a new authorization

Simplified. Some platforms add the amount to the first payment instead of creating a new one.

Saving the card is a separate decision from charging it. At Stripe, it's done by setting setup_future_usage on the first payment, or by showing a "save my payment method" checkbox and saving only when the buyer ticks it.6Stripe Docs, Save a customer's payment method when they use it for a payment Without that step, there's nothing to charge after the payment. The card network rules for stored cards are covered in our guide to saved payment methods.

There are three ways to take the money for the add-on:

MethodHow it worksWatch out for
New charge on the stored cardA second authorization for the upsell amount onlyTwo lines on the statement; the issuer can decline it or ask for 3D Secure
Edit the orderThe platform recalculates the order and charges the difference. Shopify's applyChangeset "requests a changeset to be applied to the initial purchase" and charges the buyer for the price differencePlatform-specific; you don't control how the charge is processed
Incremental authorizationRaises the amount of a payment authorized but not yet capturedCard brand and merchant category limits; network rules on when it's allowed

Sources: Shopify post-purchase extension API; Stripe, Increment an authorization.4Shopify Dev Docs, Post-purchase extension API7Stripe Docs, Increment an authorization

Whichever method you use, keep the add-on's payment separate from the first order's status. A declined upsell must never cancel or fail the order the buyer already paid for. Process the second charge with an idempotency key tied to the order and the offer, so a double click or a page refresh can't charge twice.

Incremental authorization is not a shortcut

At Stripe, incremental authorization works only on a payment that is still entirely uncaptured, is offered to users on IC+ pricing, and some card brands limit it to categories such as hotels and car rentals. If the increment is declined, the original amount stays capturable.7Stripe Docs, Increment an authorization Visa's rules tie an incremental authorization to an earlier estimated authorization, and expect a merchant to authorize the final amount when it's known.5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026 A standard online order has a known amount, so check with your acquirer before using increments for upsells.

A one-click upsell relies on two moments of consent: when the card is saved, and when the buyer accepts the offer.

The first comes from the card networks. Visa requires the merchant to get the cardholder's express informed consent before storing a card for a future payment.5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026

Before a Merchant or DWO either stores a Payment Credential for a future Transaction or completes an Advance Payment or Partial Payment, it must obtain the Cardholder's express informed consent to an agreement.

Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026, Table 5-20

That agreement must cover, among other things, the last four digits of the card used, how the stored card will be used, how the amount is determined, and the cancellation and refund policies. The terms tied to the stored card must be "displayed separately from the general purchase terms and conditions".5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026 Visa also says to "use a Stored Credential only as agreed with the Cardholder".5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026 Stripe's checklist says the same in plainer words: terms that say how you will use the saved payment method, use limited to that purpose, explicit consent for that specific use, and a record of the agreement.6Stripe Docs, Save a customer's payment method when they use it for a payment

In practice: if the checkout saves cards for post-purchase offers, say so next to the save option, not only in the terms page.

The second moment is the offer itself. Shopify's UX rules for post-purchase offers are a good baseline even off Shopify: "be transparent about all the costs involved in a purchase", "present clear options to accept or refuse upsell offers without pressuring customers", and show a price breakdown with subtotal, shipping, taxes and total.2Shopify Dev Docs, UX for post-purchase product offers Visa adds a display rule for any screen that shows a stored card: the last four digits, and the Visa mark or the word "Visa" next to it.5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026

Illustrative example.

One more rule matters for the second charge. Before a cardholder-initiated payment on a stored card, Visa expects the merchant to validate the cardholder's identity, giving a login and password as the example.5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026 An offer shown seconds after payment, in the same checkout session, is the closest case to that: the person clicking is the one who just paid. A one-click link sent by email days later is further from it: the link should be tied to that customer and that order (a signed link, or a login), and the payment should be ready for 3D Secure, or the offer should go through a new checkout.

3D Secure on the second charge

A saved card doesn't exempt the upsell from authentication. The customer clicks to buy, so it's a new customer-initiated payment on a card on file, not a merchant-initiated charge. In the EEA and UK, it needs Strong Customer Authentication, unless the issuer accepts an exemption such as low value or transaction risk analysis.17EBA Single Rulebook Q&A 2018_4031, payee-initiated card payments Outside those regions, the issuer can still approve it, decline it, or ask for 3D Secure. Expect some upsells to trigger a second challenge, and design the page so that's not a dead end.

At Stripe, 3DS is triggered when a regulation requires it (Strong Customer Authentication in Europe), when the issuer asks for it with a soft decline, or when a fraud rule requests it, and "the issuer determines the ultimate authentication flow".8Stripe Docs, Authenticate with 3D Secure In the European Economic Area, Stripe notes that low-risk payments can be exempted, but "banks can still request that the customer complete authentication".9Stripe Docs, Strong Customer Authentication readiness

Practical rule

Build the offer page so it can show a 3DS challenge, the same way the checkout does. If authentication fails, the upsell fails, not the order: show "Your bank didn't approve this add-on. Your order #10482 is confirmed." and send the buyer to the thank-you page. Don't retry the add-on in the background.

Two more points from Stripe's documentation. Wallet payments and off-session payments don't support 3DS.8Stripe Docs, Authenticate with 3D Secure And a successful 3DS makes liability shift for fraud disputes likely, but "it isn't guaranteed for any specific payment or dispute".8Stripe Docs, Authenticate with 3D Secure The full picture is in our guide to payment authentication.

Wallets, BNPL and PayPal: which payment methods support it

The one-click promise depends on how the buyer paid. A card can be stored and charged again; other methods may not be reusable in the same way, and platforms decide differently.

On PayPal's side, "the payer chooses to save their payment method", and for a PayPal account "the payer completes a billing agreement"; cards saved through PayPal need no billing agreement, but you must be approved for Expanded Checkout and enable vaulting.12PayPal Developer, Save payment methods

The practical consequence: the more buyers pay with wallets, the fewer see the post-purchase page. If your alternative payment methods are a large share of orders, an order bump before payment, or an offer on the thank-you page or by email, reaches the buyers the post-purchase page skips.

Shopify post-purchase upsells: the conditions

Shopify's documentation lists when the post-purchase page appears, and it's narrower than most app pages suggest. The steps around it are in our guide to the checkout flow; here are the conditions in full.

  6. Buyer accepts offersUp to three accepted offers per checkoutPlan one offer, then one fallback at most

Source: Shopify Dev Docs, Post-purchase product offers.1Shopify Dev Docs, Post-purchase product offers

Four more details change how you run it:

Shopify also fixes part of the page. The header confirms the first payment and the footer links to the privacy policy, terms and refund policy; merchants can't change either. The decline button sits under the accept button. The copy must not "use misleading language that makes the upsell offer feel compulsory or introduces doubt about the status of the order".2Shopify Dev Docs, UX for post-purchase product offers

Offers on the checkout steps themselves (information, shipping, payment) are a different feature: those checkout UI extensions "are available only to stores on a Shopify Plus plan".1Shopify Dev Docs, Post-purchase product offers When those limits block your offers, a checkout outside Shopify is the alternative: see our guide to the Shopify checkout alternative.

WooCommerce and custom Stripe stores

WooCommerce has no post-purchase page of its own. Upsells come from plugins, and each plugin supports a list of payment gateways. FunnelKit's documentation is a clear example: checkout pages and order bumps work with any WooCommerce gateway, but one-click upsells work only with the gateways it lists. With the official WooCommerce Stripe plugin, only the card method works for upsells; WooPayments is also card only.11FunnelKit Docs, List of payment gateways for one-click upsells Other plugins publish other lists, so read your plugin's gateway page before choosing it.

On a custom Stripe integration, you build the same steps yourself: save the card at the first payment with the buyer's consent, show the offer, then create a new payment with the saved payment method and the customer while the buyer is still on the page.6Stripe Docs, Save a customer's payment method when they use it for a payment Handle the requires_action status so the buyer can complete 3DS if the issuer asks.8Stripe Docs, Authenticate with 3D Secure

Don't flag the upsell as off-session

Stripe uses off_session=true for payments made "without the direct involvement of the customer".6Stripe Docs, Save a customer's payment method when they use it for a payment A buyer clicking Add on your offer page is directly involved. Flagging it off-session to skip 3DS misstates the payment: Stripe then requests an exemption, and if the conditions aren't met, the payment can fail.6Stripe Docs, Save a customer's payment method when they use it for a payment

What to offer, and how to price it

A one-click upsell has a few seconds of attention and one decision. The offers that fit are the ones the buyer understands without reading.

  1. The next unit

More of what they just bought: a second bottle, a refill, a larger quantity. Nothing to explain.

  2. The missing piece

An accessory that makes the main product work better, shipped in the same parcel.

  3. The upgrade

A bigger size or a better version of the item, offered as an add-on, not a replacement.

  4. The continuation

A subscription to the product they just bought. It needs its own consent: see the next section.

There is no reliable public benchmark for take rates by offer type, so price from your own numbers, not from an app's average.

  1. Start from margin, not from the discount. Value per buyer who sees the offer = take rate × (price − product cost − shipping − payment fees) − refunds on upsold items.
  2. Keep the add-on below the first order. An offer larger than what the buyer just decided to spend asks for a second, bigger decision.
  3. Ship it in the same parcel. Shopify's price breakdown shows shipping on its own line; a free-shipping add-on is easier to accept.2Shopify Dev Docs, UX for post-purchase product offers
  4. Use a discount only if it's real. A "post-purchase only" price must be lower than the normal price, or the claim is misleading.
  5. Avoid the exact amount of the first order. Two identical amounts on the same day, on the same card, look like Visa's duplicate processing case: same card, same date, same amount.5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026
  6. One offer, one fallback. If the buyer declines, a cheaper version at most. Shopify caps consecutive offers at three.2Shopify Dev Docs, UX for post-purchase product offers

A pricing logic you can check against your own margins.

A post-purchase subscription offer ("Get this every month and save") is not a one-time add-on with a different price. It's a new recurring agreement, made on a card the buyer saved for a different purpose. That's where most of the legal exposure in upsells sits.

RuleWhat it requires for a subscription upsell
ROSCA, 15 U.S.C. § 8403 (US)Clear disclosure of all material terms before billing information is obtained, express informed consent before charging, and a simple way to stop recurring charges13Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403
ROSCA, 15 U.S.C. § 8402 (US)An offer from another company after your checkout must disclose who it is and the cost, and collect the full card number itself; you can't pass it the buyer's billing details14Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8402
Visa Core Rules, Tables 5-20 and 5-21Terms (amount, timing, trial length) shown at the time of consent and separately from general terms; simple cancellation, online if the order was online; a notice at least 7 days before a trial or introductory price ends5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026
Shopify post-purchase subscriptionsA consent checkbox (BuyerConsent) placed between the price summary and the offer buttons; a recurring line showing the plan and recurring cost; no subscription on orders without a shipping address3Shopify Dev Docs, UX for post-purchase subscriptions1Shopify Dev Docs, Post-purchase product offers

The rule of thumb that follows: the Add button alone is not consent to recurring billing. The buyer must see the price per cycle, the frequency, when the first renewal happens and how to cancel, and actively agree. On Shopify, applying a subscription change without that consent returns a buyer_consent_required error.4Shopify Dev Docs, Post-purchase extension API The wider legal picture, including where the FTC's click-to-cancel rule stands, is in our guide to free trials and negative option billing. Renewals, retries and the rest of the recurring side are in subscription payment processing.

Chargeback risk when the second charge isn't clear

A buyer who doesn't remember accepting the offer sees a second charge from you on the same day. If they don't recognize it, they call their bank. Stripe's dispute categories show how that plays out: an "unrecognized" claim "is effectively indistinguishable from the Fraudulent reason", and a "duplicate" claim says the buyer was "charged multiple times for the same product or service".15Stripe Docs, Dispute reason code categories

  1. A second charge they don't rememberUnrecognized or fraudConfirmation email listing both charges, sent right away
  2. Two identical amounts on the same dayDuplicate processingDifferent amounts, receipts that name each item
  3. A statement name that doesn't match the storeUnrecognizedA descriptor with the store name, plus an order suffix
  4. A monthly charge after a one-time purchaseCanceled recurring or not authorizedSeparate recurring consent, renewal reminders
  5. The add-on arrives later than the main orderProduct not receivedShip together, or say the date on the offer

Stripe's advice against duplicate claims is to "send detailed receipts that explain every payment and make it easy to distinguish the unique reason for each", and against unrecognized ones, a recognizable statement descriptor and receipts.15Stripe Docs, Dispute reason code categories At Stripe, a statement descriptor is 5 to 22 characters, and "clear and accurate statement descriptors can reduce chargebacks and disputes".16Stripe Docs, Statement descriptors What else belongs in the email is covered in payment confirmation email.

A charge outside the terms must be refunded

Visa's stored-card rules require a full refund when the merchant didn't stick to the terms and conditions of the sale.5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, April 18, 2026 An upsell charged without a clear accept click, or a subscription started from a one-time offer, is exactly that case. Keep the record of every accept click (time, offer, price shown, card) with the payment ID: it's your evidence if a dispute arrives. The full method is in our guide to chargeback prevention.

How to measure a one-click upsell

A one-click upsell is easy to overrate. The offer page reports clicks; finance sees settled payments, refunds and disputes weeks later. Measure on the order, not on the page.

MetricHow to calculate itWhy it matters
Take rateAcceptedOffers ÷ buyers who saw the offerThe basic signal. Count buyers who saw it, not all orders: wallet buyers may never see it
Second-charge successApproved upsell charges ÷ accepted offersDeclines and failed 3DS on the add-on. Low values point to a payment problem, not an offer problem
Average order valueRevenue ÷ orders, with and without the upsellShows the effect per order, but mixes in traffic changes
Incremental revenueRevenue per buyer in the group that sees the offer, minus the holdout that doesn'tThe only number that tells you the offer added money rather than moved it
Refund rate of upsold itemsRefunded add-ons ÷ add-ons sold, next to the same rate for main productsAn add-on refunded more often than the main product was bought by mistake or oversold
Dispute rate on upsell chargesDisputes on upsell payments ÷ upsell paymentsDisputes count in your ratio like any other. Watch it for a full dispute window

Split buyers at the order level, keep a holdout group that never sees the offer, and wait until refunds and disputes come in before calling a winner. On Shopify, take revenue from orders: pixel-based tools record only the first purchase.1Shopify Dev Docs, Post-purchase product offers How to read and benchmark the take rate is covered in our guide to the upsell rate.

How Tagada helps

One-click upsells on a checkout that keeps the card

  • Offers paid with the card of the first order: after checkout, one click charges the payment method stored on the main order and creates a linked order, with 3D Secure handled the same way as at checkout (upsells and offers).
  • Upsell and downsell without code: native offer pages; accepted leads to the next offer, declined to a cheaper downsell, then the thank-you page (upsell and downsell funnel).
  • Offers picked by cart, country or customer: order total, product in the order, country or EU, CRM tag or UTM source, with a fallback offer so nobody gets stuck (funnel demos).
  • Ready-made funnels: import a post-purchase funnel into the CRM (beta) and swap in your products (basic post-purchase).
  • Offers in your emails: a signed link opens the upsell, paid with the card of the original order; accepting twice charges once (customer portal).
  • 3D Secure when the bank asks: the charge returns requires_action and a redirect, so the customer completes the challenge instead of hitting a dead end (customer portal).
  • Order bumps and A/B tests on the same checkout, with Apple Pay and Google Pay (order bumps).
  • TagadaPay underneath: "Native 3DS2, device intelligence, and rules engine." Each payment can route to the processor most likely to approve it and retry on decline, and you can switch processors without re-onboarding customers.
  • Onboarding in one KYC: most merchants are live on TagadaPay in under 24 hours. "If you sell something real, we will get you paid."
  • 24/7 human support on Slack Connect: "The person who reviews your application has a name, and so does the one who picks up when something breaks."

It runs standalone, on Shopify, on WooCommerce or headless. Plans are on the pricing page. Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

Frequently asked questions

What is a one-click upsell?

A one-click upsell, also written 1-click upsell, is an offer shown after the buyer has paid and before the thank-you page. Accepting it adds a product to the order and charges the card saved during checkout, so the buyer doesn't type card details again. If the buyer has to re-enter payment details, it's a second checkout, not a one-click upsell.

What is the difference between an order bump and a one-click upsell?

An order bump is a checkbox on the checkout page: the add-on is included in the first payment. A one-click upsell appears after the payment is approved and creates a second charge, or an added amount, on the stored card. The bump can distract from paying; the upsell can't, but it depends on a card being stored.

What is a downsell?

A downsell is the offer shown to a buyer who just declined an upsell. It's a cheaper version of the same idea, such as one extra month instead of three, or the same product at a lower price. It's charged the same way, on the stored card, with one click.

How many upsells should I offer after checkout?

One upsell, one downsell if it's declined, and at most one second offer. Every extra screen delays the thank-you page and the order confirmation. Shopify caps consecutive post-purchase offers at three, and allows up to three accepted offers per checkout.

Do one-click upsells work with Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal?

It depends on the platform. Shopify doesn't show post-purchase offers when the buyer paid with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay or an installment service such as Klarna. Some WooCommerce plugins support wallets through their own Stripe gateway. PayPal works only if the buyer agreed to save their PayPal account through a billing agreement.

Does a one-click upsell need 3D Secure?

It can. The buyer clicks to buy, so the upsell is a new customer-initiated payment on a card on file. In the EEA and UK, it needs Strong Customer Authentication unless the issuer accepts an exemption such as low value or transaction risk analysis. Elsewhere, the issuer can still ask for 3D Secure, so the offer page must be able to show the challenge.

Is it legal to charge a customer's card again without asking for it?

Yes, if the buyer agreed to store the card at checkout and your terms say how it will be used. Visa requires express informed consent before storing a card, and use of the card only as agreed. On the offer screen, the buyer must see the price and click to accept. A charge they never accepted is a dispute waiting to happen.

Does a one-click upsell show as a separate charge on the bank statement?

Usually yes, when the upsell is a new authorization on the stored card. With an incremental authorization on an uncaptured payment, Stripe shows separate pending entries, then one final entry after capture. Either way, the confirmation email should list both amounts, and the statement name should be one the buyer recognizes.

Can a one-click upsell start a subscription?

Yes, but the buyer must agree to the recurring terms, not just click Add. Under ROSCA, terms come before billing information and charges need express informed consent. Shopify's post-purchase subscriptions require a consent checkbox between the price summary and the buttons, and won't add a subscription to orders without a shipping address.
