Order Bumps for Fitness Brands
12 order bump ideas for fitness equipment and sports nutrition, how to match them to the cart, price and place them, and why never to pre-check.
Article summary
TL;DR
An order bump is a small add-on shown on the checkout page, which the buyer adds with one tick before paying. For a fitness brand, the best bumps are the obvious next item: collars with a barbell, a shaker with protein powder, shipping protection on a large order. Show one bump that matches the cart, and never pre-check it.
- Match the bump to the cart: an equipment buyer and a protein buyer need different add-ons.
- Polar Analytics reports a $138.48 median order for "Sports & Outdoor" and $66 for "Health & Wellness" (August 2026); price the bump against your own cart.
- The FTC lists "tricking a shopper into buying unwanted items by using a pre-checked box" as a dark pattern (September 2022).
- A bump that starts a subscription needs clear terms and express consent under ROSCA.
- On Shopify, apps that add offers to the payment page are available only on Shopify Plus.

12 order bump ideas for fitness brands
| # | Bump | Fits when the cart has | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|

| 2 | Floor mat or rubber tiles | A rack, bench or cardio machine | Protects the floor; easy yes |
| 3 | Resistance band set | A rack or a pull-up bar | Light, cheap, used with the main item |
| 4 | Chalk, grips or wrist wraps | A barbell, kettlebells | Small consumables, regular reorders |
| 5 | Cleaning and care kit | A treadmill, rower or bike | Keeps the machine running |
| 6 | Assembly service | Flat-packed equipment | Removes the biggest worry after delivery |
| 7 | Shipping protection | Large or fragile orders | Covers loss or damage in transit |
| 8 | Shaker bottle | Protein powder or pre-workout | Used from day one |
| 9 | Single-serve sample pack | A first nutrition order | Lets buyers try another flavor |
| 10 | Second flavor at a lower price | One tub | Variety for daily use |

Avoid bumps that compete with the main item, or that need a decision the buyer wasn't ready for, like a second machine. That belongs in a one-click upsell after payment.
Match the bump to the cart
One bump for every checkout wastes the slot. Show the one that fits what is in the cart.
| Cart contains | Bump to show | Bump to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Barbell, plates | Collars, chalk | A nutrition subscription |
| Rack, bench | Floor mat, band set, assembly | Another large item |
| Cardio machine | Care kit, mat, protection plan | Small accessories unrelated to cardio |
| Protein powder | Shaker, sample pack | Heavy equipment |
| Pre-workout | Shaker, second flavor | Anything that reads as a stronger product |
| Mixed cart | Faster shipping | Several bumps at once |
Example
A buyer adds an olympic barbell. The bump reads: "Add lock collars for $19. Keep plates on the bar from your first lift." A buyer who adds a tub of protein sees: "Add a shaker for $8."
Price, copy and placement
- Price it well below the order. Thrive Themes suggests 10% to 25% of the main product, and under 10% for high-ticket items (August 2025)7Thrive Themes, Order bump ideas, August 6, 2025. On a $900 rack, that points to a mat or collars, not a bench.
- Show the price, and the saving if any, in the bump line itself.
- One sentence on why it helps: what it does with the item in the cart.
- No result claims. "Adds variety" is fine; anything about body or performance outcomes is not.
- Place it next to the order summary or just above the pay button, visible on mobile without scrolling.
- One bump only. 17% of abandoners already find checkouts too long or complicated5Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025, read November 2, 2026.

A bump can answer one, and must not add to the other.
Pre-checked or not?
Leave the box unchecked. The buyer must choose the add-on.
| Practice | Risk |
|---|---|
| Pre-checked bump | The FTC lists pre-checked add-ons as a dark pattern1FTC, Bringing Dark Patterns to Light, staff report, September 14, 2022; in the EU, a buyer charged through a pre-selected option is entitled to a refund2Directive 2011/83/EU on consumer rights, Article 22, read November 2, 2026 |
| Pre-checked shipping protection | Same rule; buyers who didn't notice it ask for refunds or dispute the charge |
| Bump that adds a subscription | Needs clear terms before billing and express consent under ROSCA3Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403 |
| Chains of add-ons with countdowns | Stripe's list includes businesses that "use high-pressure upselling"4Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026 |

Watch out
Some checkout tools let you pre-check a bump. A pre-checked bump looks good on AOV for a few weeks, then comes back as refunds and disputes.
Measure your bump
| Metric | Formula | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Take rate | Orders with bump ÷ orders | Is the offer relevant to this cart? |
| AOV lift | AOV with bump vs. without | What it adds per order |
| Contribution per order | After product, shipping, payment fees | Does it make money? Heavy bumps can add freight |
| Refunds on bump items | Bump refunds ÷ bumps sold | Did buyers really want it? |
| Checkout completion | Orders ÷ checkouts started | Does the bump slow buyers down? |
