SMS Flows for Fitness Brands

The SMS flows that work for fitness brands selling equipment, sports nutrition or programs, plus the TCPA consent, timing and claim rules.

Article summary

TL;DR

For a fitness brand, SMS works best as a few automated flows, not frequent blasts: abandoned checkout, delivery updates for equipment, reorder reminders for sports nutrition, and failed payments. Leave education and workout content to email. Before the first marketing text, get written consent that names the phone number, and text between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. local time.

  • Klaviyo reports $3.30 SMS revenue per recipient for automated flows in sporting goods, against $0.34 for campaigns (183,000+ customers, read November 2026).
  • Abandoned cart texts average a 10.3% click rate, against 6.0% for abandoned cart emails (Klaviyo, October 2, 2026).
  • Autodialed marketing texts need "prior express written consent", which cannot be a condition of purchase.
  • To defend a Visa "not received" dispute, you need proof of delivery with the full address; delivery texts help you collect it.
  • 90% of recovered failed payments come back within 10 days, so the first card-update text goes out on day 0 (Recurly, April 2026).

This guide is part of our playbook on the best ecommerce platform for fitness brands. Longer sequences are in email flows for fitness brands.

What to text, by product family

The right texts depend on what you sell. Most fitness brands sell one or more of three things, and each needs different flows.

Product familyWhat the buyer waits forTexts that helpTexts to skip
Home gym equipmentDelivery of a heavy, costly itemOrder confirmed, delivery window, delivered, return instructionsWeekly promotions to someone who just spent several hundred dollars
Fitness accessoriesA small order, often an add-onAbandoned checkout, shipping, back in stockLong sequences for a $20 item
Sports nutrition (protein powder, pre-workout)The next orderReorder reminder, subscription notices, failed paymentAnything that reads like a results claim
Workout programsAccess to the contentAccess link, account and billing noticesDaily texts nobody opted in for

Postscript's fitness and outdoor page lists the same building blocks: cart recovery, launches, back-in-stock alerts, post-purchase care tips, review requests and shipping notices. It publishes no fitness-specific results.

Klaviyo's sporting goods data backs the flow-first approach: $3.30 revenue per recipient for automated SMS flows, about ten times the $0.34 of campaigns1Klaviyo, SMS benchmarks by industry, sporting goods, based on more than 183,000 Klaviyo customers, read November 2, 2026 (no data period stated).

What each text does

  1. Out for delivery: flow 3, equipment. The buyer has to be home.
  2. Time to reorder: flow 5, sports nutrition, timed on your customers' usual reorder interval.
  3. Your program: workout programs, the access link.
  1. BrandMonOut for deliveryBrand: your power rack is out for delivery today, 8 a.m. to noon. Need to reschedule? [link]
  2. BrandWedTime to reorderBrand: it's been 5 weeks since your protein order. Reorder in one tap: [link]
  3. BrandFriYour programBrand: your workout program is ready. Access link: [link]

Brand name first, one action, one link.

Illustrative example.

Set the reorder timing from your own order data, not from a guess about how fast people use the product. A reminder that comes too early reads as pressure; one that comes too late loses the order to a competitor.

Delivery texts for heavy equipment

For equipment, delivery texts do more than inform. They cut "where is my order?" tickets and help you win disputes.

  1. Before shipping

Confirm the address and the delivery method, and ask the buyer to reply if anything is wrong.

  2. Out for delivery

Give the window and a link to reschedule if the carrier allows it.

  3. Delivered

Send the proof of delivery and the return instructions.

Under Visa's dispute condition 13.1 ("not received"), your defense for delivered goods is "proof of delivery that contains the full delivery address (tracking with partial address is not permitted)"7Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules: dispute conditions 13.1 and 13.3, edition of October 24, 2026, pp. 752-769; table 5-21 (trial and introductory offer notice), edition of April 18, 2026.

Under 13.3 ("not as described" or defective), a buyer's attempt to return counts against you if you "did not provide clear instructions on how to return"7Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules: dispute conditions 13.1 and 13.3, edition of October 24, 2026, pp. 752-769; table 5-21 (trial and introductory offer notice), edition of April 18, 2026. The rules are covered in detail in chargebacks for fitness brands. Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

Example

"Brand: your power rack is out for delivery today, 8 a.m. to noon. Need to reschedule? [link]. Reply STOP to opt out."

Texting rules in the US come from the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and the FCC's rules, plus carrier registration.

Watch out

A pre-checked SMS box, or one required to place the order, does not meet these rules. Keep SMS consent separate and optional at checkout. Order and delivery texts are transactional, but adding a promotion to them can turn them into marketing texts. Some states add their own texting laws; check the states where your customers live. This is general information, not legal advice.

What a fitness text can and can't say

A text is an ad under the same rules as your product page. Short formats make claims sound stronger, not weaker.

  • No results promises. The FTC says "testimonials that report results more dramatic than users can generally expect are likely to be deceptive", and "Results not typical" does not cure it8FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance, December 2022. A "transformation" text with a customer's numbers falls under this.
  • No weight loss or muscle gain shortcuts. Keep product texts on the product: what it is, the price, the delivery date, the link.
  • Sports nutrition follows supplement rules. The claim limits on your label apply to every text about it.
  • Say who you are in the first words, and add opt-out wording ("Reply STOP to opt out") in the welcome text and regularly after.
  • One message, one action, one link.

Example

"Brand: it's been 5 weeks since your protein order. Reorder in one tap, or switch to every 30 days: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out."

How Tagada helps

The renewal, reorder and card update events behind your texts

Tagada is the checkout and subscription system that produces the events your texts react to:

  • Subscriptions with trials, billing cycles, retries and automatic recovery; subscription statuses include "trialing", "active", "past_due" and "paused" (subscriptions docs)
  • Transactional email templates by event, including "abandoned_checkout", "subscription_rebill_upcoming" and "subscription_past_due" (emails docs); set renewal notices so they meet the 7-day Visa rule for trials, since the default rebill reminder is 3 days
  • One-page checkout with Apple Pay and Google Pay, where abandoned checkout and card update links land
  • Server-side tracking to Meta, Google and TikTok, so orders that come back from a text are counted

Billing on subscription is covered in subscription billing for fitness brands. Plans are on the pricing page. To take payments with TagadaPay, apply today: "Most merchants are live under 24 hours," according to TagadaPay.

Frequently asked questions

Does SMS marketing work for fitness brands?

For short, time-sensitive messages, yes. Klaviyo reports $3.30 revenue per recipient for automated SMS flows in sporting goods, against $0.34 for campaigns. Start with abandoned checkout, delivery updates, reorder reminders and failed payments, and keep promotional blasts occasional.

What texts should a fitness equipment store send?

Order confirmation, delivery window, out for delivery, delivered with proof, and return instructions. These texts cut support tickets, and the proof of delivery with the full address is what Visa asks for when a buyer disputes a charge as "not received".

Do I need consent to text my customers?

For marketing texts, yes: prior express written consent, in an agreement that names the number and isn't a condition of purchase. Order and delivery updates are transactional, but adding a promotion to them can turn them into marketing texts. Keep the SMS box separate and unchecked at checkout.

What time can I send marketing texts?

Federal rules forbid telephone solicitations before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. at the recipient's local time. Some states are stricter. Schedule by your customer's time zone, not yours, especially if you ship nationwide.

How do I get customers to reorder protein by text?

Send one reminder when a customer is due to reorder, based on your own order data, with a single link to reorder or switch to a subscription. Don't add results claims. If they subscribe, the text flow shifts to renewal notices and card updates.
