Abandoned Cart Recovery for Fitness Brands
Why fitness shoppers abandon, the recovery sequences for equipment and sports nutrition carts, when to discount, and 2026 benchmarks.
Article summary
TL;DR
Most fitness carts never become orders. Recover part of them with a reminder within the hour, a second message that answers the real doubt (shipping cost, delivery date, returns, a declined card), and a last one at about 48 hours. Give big equipment carts a longer, more personal sequence, and discount only at the end, if at all.
- The average documented cart abandonment rate is 70.22% (Baymard, 50 studies, September 2025).
- In Polar's "Sports & Outdoor" category, 28.51% of carts become orders; in "Health & Wellness", 35.16% (4,000+ Shopify brands, August 2026).
- 40% of abandoners cite extra costs and 10% had their card declined (Baymard, US shoppers).
- Abandoned cart emails earn $6.77 per recipient on average; texts get a 10.3% click rate against 6.0% for emails (Klaviyo, October 2, 2026).
- Marketing emails need an opt-out and a postal address; marketing texts need prior express written consent.

How many fitness carts are abandoned?
About seven in ten, depending on what you sell. Polar has no "fitness" category; equipment sits closest to "Sports & Outdoor" and sports nutrition to "Health & Wellness".
| Polar category (median) | Add to cart | Cart to purchase | Average order value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sports & Outdoor | 7.62% | 28.51% | $138.48 |
| Health & Wellness | 12.91% | 35.16% | $66 |
| All industries | n/a | 24.12% | n/a |

The gap matters. A sports and outdoor cart is worth about twice a health and wellness cart2Polar Analytics, Ecommerce benchmarks, more than 4,000 Shopify brands, medians, last update August 25, 2026, read November 2, 2026, so each recovered equipment order pays for more effort, including a personal follow-up.

| Account required | 18% | Guest checkout | Guest checkout |
| Checkout too long | 17% | Prefilled checkout link | Prefilled checkout link |
| Card declined | 10% | Another method, Apple Pay or Google Pay | Same |

Fig. 1Why US shoppers leave a checkout
Extra costs come first, and freight makes them worse.
For equipment, add one doubt Baymard doesn't list on its own: returns. A buyer wondering how to send back a 100-pound bench needs the answer before paying, not after.
Two sequences: equipment and sports nutrition
A $40 tub of protein and a $1,500 treadmill don't deserve the same follow-up. Run two flows, split by cart value or product type.
Sports nutrition and accessories (short)
| Step | Channel | Timing | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Email (and SMS if opted in) | 30 to 60 minutes | Product, total, one link back to the checkout |
| 2 | About 24 hours | Reviews, free shipping threshold, subscribe option | |
| 3 | Email or SMS | About 48 hours | Last reminder; small incentive for first-time buyers only, if you use one |
Home gym equipment (longer, more personal)
| Step | Channel | Timing | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Email (and SMS if opted in) | 30 to 60 minutes | Product, total with shipping, delivery estimate, link back |
| 2 | About 24 hours | Dimensions, assembly, warranty, return policy | |
| 3 | Email or a personal message from your team | 2 to 3 days | Answer questions; payment options |
| 4 | About 5 to 7 days | Last reminder; free shipping or a free accessory rather than a percentage off |

A refurbished equipment seller, Sports and Fitness Exchange, moved from automated cart emails to "sales-led, personalized" reminders, then added on-site prompts, and reports more than $17,000 recovered in four weeks, as published by its vendor7Mason (ModeMagic), How Sports and Fitness Exchange added $17,000 in new sales in 4 weeks, 2023 (vendor case study). Treat it as an example of the approach, not a benchmark.

Watch out
Recovery emails are ads under FTC rules. Don't add before-and-after stories or customer results to push the order. The FTC says "testimonials that report results more dramatic than users can generally expect are likely to be deceptive", and a "results not typical" line doesn't fix it6FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance, December 2022. Sell the product, the delivery and the terms.
Discounts: when, not always
A discount in every first reminder teaches shoppers to abandon on purpose.
- No discount in the first two messages. Many shoppers were only interrupted.
- For equipment, prefer free shipping or a free accessory: it answers the top reason, extra costs1Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025, and protects the price of a high-ticket item.
- For sports nutrition, prefer the subscription offer over a one-time code, if your margin allows a subscribe price.
- Never discount returning customers or subscribers in cart recovery.
Capture and consent
You can only recover a cart if you know who left it.
- Ask for the email first in the checkout, so an abandoned checkout has a contact.
- Keep SMS consent separate and optional, never pre-checked; marketing texts need prior express written consent447 CFR 64.1200, Delivery restrictions, sections (a)(2) and (f)(9).
- Marketing emails need a working opt-out and a valid physical postal address5FTC, CAN-SPAM Act: A compliance guide for business, read October 26, 2026.
- Count recovered orders once, with server-side tracking: server-side tracking for fitness brands.

Klaviyo publishes no sporting goods line for cart flows. Its highest email revenue per recipient goes to bigger-ticket categories: $35.24 for the top 10% in hardware and home improvement and $28.76 in home and garden3Klaviyo, Abandoned cart benchmarks, more than 110,000 customers, October 2, 2026. Equipment brands should expect their own numbers to sit closer to those than to a $30 average order.

How Tagada helps
A short checkout for every recovery link, treadmill or protein
- One-page checkout with Apple Pay and Google Pay, so recovery links land on a short checkout (custom ecommerce checkout)
- An "abandoned_checkout" email template among its transactional emails (emails docs)
- Routing across TagadaPay and processors such as Stripe, NMI and Airwallex, with one logic, and cascade to another processor when one is down or times out, so an outage doesn't cost the cart. TagadaPay reports a "+18% approval uplift."
- "40+ Local payment methods" on TagadaPay, for shoppers whose card won't pass
- Order bumps, one-click upsells and A/B tests on the checkout that recovered shoppers return to
- Server-side tracking to Meta, Google and TikTok
Declines on the payment side are covered in reducing payment declines for fitness brands. Plans are on the pricing page. To take payments with TagadaPay, apply today: "Most merchants are live under 24 hours," according to TagadaPay.
