What MCC 8062 means

MCC 8062 is the four-digit merchant category code for Hospitals. Visa's manual defines it like this:1

Merchants classified with this MCC are hospitals that provide diagnostic services, extensive medical treatment, surgery, continuous nursing services, mental and psychiatric care, and other hospital services.

Visa gives no "Included in this MCC" list. Its similar merchants are 0742 (Veterinary Services) and 8050 (nursing and personal care facilities).1

On Mastercard. The title is also Hospitals. The description adds that 8062 "includes mental and psychiatric hospitals, children's hospitals, and maternity hospitals", and says: "For pet clinics or pet hospitals, use MCC 0742." Mastercard pairs 8062 with transaction category code O, which "applies only to transactions involving a charge for an overnight bed occupancy by a patient", not to a separate outpatient bill or a hospital gift shop.3

8062 vs 8011, 8050, 8099 and other codes

The test is the facility, not the specialty. A psychiatric hospital is 8062; a psychiatrist's practice is 8011 or 8099, since Visa lists psychiatrists under both.1

Paying and accepting cards at a hospital

Card fees. Visa lets a merchant add a "Service Fee" only on the codes listed for its country. 8062 isn't listed in any region, while 8050 is listed in Canada.2 Surcharges are a separate rule; see our credit card surcharge guide.

Bills after insurance. In the US, 8062 is a Visa "Health Care Merchant" code, so a hospital can charge the balance once your insurer has ruled, with your written permission. Our MCC 8099 page explains that rule and HSA or FSA cards.2

Bill payment apps. A consumer bill payment service paying a hospital for you must send the biller's code, and Visa's allowed list includes 8062 in every region.2

Rewards. Each card issuer decides which codes earn points or cashback. Read your card's terms. Your bank can't change a merchant's code; the acquirer sets it.
