Article summary

TL;DR

Yes. Square Online has a "Digital" item type for "a digital file for download, like an ebook or song", and none of the 31 unsupported industries in its US terms names them. • "Your Taxes are your responsibility", and so are customer service, refunds and order fulfillment.

Watch out

Square Online also has a "Membership" item type to "collect membership dues and registration fees for clubs and classes"1Square Support, Sell non-physical items on your website, read November 3, 2026, while its terms exclude "buyers or membership clubs, including dues"3Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 1, 3, 27, 33, 34 and 36, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026. A class or a local club is the intended use. A paid membership sold online as a deal club or a content subscription sits close to items 3 and 6: describe it to Square before you launch.

Every sale must also be "a bona fide sale" that "accurately describes the goods"3Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 1, 3, 27, 33, 34 and 36, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026. For a download, say what the file is, its format, and how and when the buyer gets it.

How digital items work on Square Online

Square takes the payment; the file is yours to send. Square's help article lists five non-physical item types, available to Square Online Free, Plus and Premium subscribers1Square Support, Sell non-physical items on your website, read November 3, 2026:

Item typeWhat Square says it's for1Square Support, Sell non-physical items on your website, read November 3, 2026
Digital"A digital file for download, like an ebook or song, that you can manually send to the customer"
Membership"Membership dues and registration fees for clubs and classes"
EventTickets to events, with an address or online link and times
DonationDonations "for any cause of up to $5,000"
Other"Items you will fulfill manually"

Three limits come with them1Square Support, Sell non-physical items on your website, read November 3, 2026:

  • No automatic delivery. "When customers purchase your non-physical items, you'll have to manually email them with details about redeeming their purchase", such as a download link.
  • Separate carts. Buyers must purchase non-physical items "separately from items that can be shipped, picked up, or locally delivered".
  • Regions to set. In fulfillment settings, each type is "Available worldwide" or "Available in select countries".

Fig. 1Three ways to deliver a digital product after a Square payment

  1. Manual email

    You email the file or a download link after each order. Free, but slow and easy to miss.

  2. SendOwl

    Square's suggested app: automatic delivery, password-locked files, stamped PDFs, download limits.

  3. Your own system

    A site or tool that reads Square orders and opens access. You keep the delivery log.

Square itself never sends the file

Square Support, Sell non-physical items, and Square App Marketplace, SendOwl listing, read November 3, 2026.

SendOwl's Square listing covers "printables to ebooks, music to software licenses, and courses to templates", and lets you "limit when and how often your customer can view, stream or download your file"2Square App Marketplace, SendOwl, updated February 19, 2026, read November 3, 2026. Whatever you choose, log each delivery: time, email address, and each download or login. That log is your proof if a buyer disputes.

What stays your job

With Square, you are the seller. Square doesn't take over tax, support or refunds for digital goods3Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 1, 3, 27, 33, 34 and 36, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026:

Watch out

"no refunds" on a download page doesn't stop a dispute. Square's terms say that if your policy "prohibits returns or is unsatisfactory to the customer, you may still receive a Chargeback"3Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 1, 3, 27, 33, 34 and 36, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026. Square also says a no-refunds sign on your website "is not sufficient" to prove your policy4Square Support, Prevent payment disputes, read November 3, 2026. For online sales, it suggests a "click to agree" button at checkout5Square Support, Prepare documents to challenge disputes, read November 3, 2026.

Disputes on digital goods

There's no tracking number for a file. Your evidence is the access record.

For a card-absent fraud dispute on digital goods, Visa accepts a description of the goods, the date they were provided, and 2 or more of these6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, table 11-7 and dispute condition 13.5:

  • IP address;
  • device ID;
  • the buyer's name and email linked to their profile;
  • a verified login before the purchase;
  • an access on or after the purchase;
  • the same device and card in an undisputed earlier transaction.

Fig. 2What to log on every digital sale

  1. At checkout: IP address, device ID, email and name tied to the order.
  2. At delivery: time the link or access was sent, and to which address.
  3. After delivery: each download, login and page opened, with time and device.
  4. On every order: the product description and terms the buyer agreed to.

two of these can win a fraud dispute

Visa Core Rules, Compelling Evidence for digital goods, edition of October 24, 2026.

Visa also lets buyers dispute digital goods bought through a trial or introductory offer when they were "not clearly advised of further Transactions" (condition 13.5)6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, table 11-7 and dispute condition 13.5. Square accepts evidence as HEIC, JPEG, PDF, PNG or TIFF files, "no larger than 5MB and no longer than 15 pages"5Square Support, Prepare documents to challenge disputes, read November 3, 2026: export your logs to PDF.

Courses, memberships and subscriptions

Square's terms don't name online courses or coaching. The lines that reach info product funnels are the same as above: "up-sell merchants", "infomercial sales" and "direct marketing or subscription offers or services"3Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 1, 3, 27, 33, 34 and 36, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Does Square allow digital products?

Yes. Square Online has a Digital item type for "a digital file for download, like an ebook or song", and Square's list of unsupported industries doesn't name digital products. It excludes some digital models: adult content in any medium, occult services, unauthorized MLM, and subscription offers sold by direct marketing.

Does Square deliver digital downloads automatically?

No. Square says you'll "have to manually email" buyers the details, such as a download link. For automatic delivery, Square points to SendOwl in its App Marketplace, which also locks files and limits downloads. Your own system reading Square orders is the other option.

Can I sell ebooks on Square?

Yes. Square names the ebook as an example of its Digital item type. Selling an ebook you don't have the rights to falls under "any illegal activity or goods". Describe the file and its format on the product page, and log each delivery.

Why can't I sell digital and physical items in the same order on Square?

Square Online requires buyers to purchase non-physical items "separately from items that can be shipped, picked up, or locally delivered", because they're delivered differently. A bundle of a printed book and its audio file needs two checkouts, or one physical item with the download link sent by email.

Who handles sales tax on digital products sold with Square?

You do. Square's terms say "Your Taxes are your responsibility". Square is a payment facilitator, not the seller of your goods; it reports your payments to the IRS once you pass the reporting thresholds. Check the rules in each state where you sell before you collect.
