Square Chargeback Thresholds and What Happens Above Them

Square publishes no dispute limit. The Visa and Mastercard thresholds that apply, what Square's terms let it do, and how disputes run on Square.

Article summary

TL;DR

Square doesn't publish a chargeback limit. Its US terms let it set a reserve, delay payouts, add fees or end the service when it judges disputes excessive. The published thresholds come from the card networks: Visa from 1.5% and 1,500 disputes and fraud reports a month in the US, Mastercard from 1.5% and 100 chargebacks.

  • Square's Payment Terms (last updated July 30, 2026) give no ratio: they act if Square believes "you might incur, or you are incurring, an excessive amount of Chargebacks".
  • Above that, Square may set new fees, a reserve, delayed payouts, or terminate or suspend the Payment Services.
  • Visa's VAMP "Excessive" level is 1.5% and 1,500 cases a month in the US since April 1, 2026; it was 2.2% before.
  • Square gives you 7 days to answer a dispute, and the bank can take up to 90 days to decide.
  • Square's help article on network monitoring programs redirects to the Support Center home on November 3, 2026; its last archived version still described Visa programs that VAMP replaced.

Square's number: there isn't one

Square sets no ratio in its terms or help center. Section 21 of the Payment Terms is titled "Excessive Chargebacks" and leaves the line to Square1Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026:

"If we believe you might incur, or you are incurring, an excessive amount of Chargebacks, we may establish additional conditions governing your Square Account."

Two words matter: "might incur". Square can act on a forecast, before your ratio reaches any network threshold. You will read 0.5%, 0.9% or 1% as "Square's limit" on analytics and vendor sites. None of those figures appears in Square's terms or help center as read on November 3, 20261Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 20262Square Support, Manage payment disputes, read November 3, 2026.

What Square does show you is its own measure. The Disputes page of the Dashboard tracks "the percent of payments that result in disputes, the percent of disputes won, and the total funds you've protected from disputes"; the Square POS app shows the same card under Reports2Square Support, Manage payment disputes, read November 3, 2026.

The fines come from Visa and Mastercard, through Square. Square's old article on these programs still circulates. What Square can do as disputes rise

It escalates, and Square's terms give it tools at each step. In order:

  1. Each dispute is held at once. Square places "an immediate hold on the disputed funds" from your balance or your linked bank account2Square Support, Manage payment disputes, read November 3, 2026.
  2. Likely disputes can be held too. If Square "reasonably believe[s] that a Chargeback is likely", it may withhold that amount until the dispute window expires1Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.
  3. Payouts can slow down. "If you have pending Chargebacks, we may delay payouts from your Square Account"1Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.
  4. Extra conditions apply. On excessive chargebacks: new processing fees, a reserve, delayed payouts, or suspension of the Payment Services1Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.
  5. A network program can follow. Square emails the owner when Visa or Mastercard places the account in a program, and the network's fines are passed on1Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 20265Square Support, Learn about card network monitoring programs (article 7580), web archive capture of July 10, 2025; the live URL redirects to the Support Center home on November 3, 2026.
  6. The service can end. "Square may terminate your use of the Payment Services at any time for any reason", and you still owe chargebacks raised after that1Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

Sources: Square Payment Terms sections 12, 14, 20, 21 and 37 (July 30, 2026), Manage payment disputes, and the archived monitoring programs article.

The reserve has no cap or end date in the terms. Square sets it "in an amount as reasonably determined by us", and can raise, reduce or remove it "at any time"1Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026. How long it usually lasts: Square reserves. Why payouts stop: Square holding your funds. The end of the road: Square deactivated your account.

Mastercard's fines grow with each month spent above its line, as Square's archived article listed them5Square Support, Learn about card network monitoring programs (article 7580), web archive capture of July 10, 2025; the live URL redirects to the Support Center home on November 3, 2026:

How a dispute runs on Square

What it costs: "There are no fees for dispute management services for chargebacks"2Square Support, Manage payment disputes, read November 3, 2026. The terms still let Square charge a fee for contesting disputes "upon notice to you"1Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026. Every dispute counts in the networks' ratios whatever the outcome, so winning protects the money, not the ratio6Visa, Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program fact sheet, 20257Mastercard, Security Rules and Procedures, Merchant Edition, section 8.3, read October 14, 2026.

Two payment methods follow other rules:

Evidence has a format. Square accepts HEIC, JPEG, PDF, PNG or TIFF files, "no larger than 5MB and no longer than 15 pages"4Square Support, Prepare documents to challenge disputes, read November 3, 2026. For online sales, it suggests a "click to agree" button for your terms at checkout, as stronger proof than a policy page4Square Support, Prepare documents to challenge disputes, read November 3, 2026. How to write the response: chargeback rebuttal letter.

Bringing the ratio down on Square

Start from your reason codes. Square names three common ones: fraud, goods not received, and goods not as described2Square Support, Manage payment disputes, read November 3, 2026.

Fig. 3From the pattern to the fix

  1. Fraud disputes on online ordersStolen cards reach checkoutTurn on Risk Manager rules: decline, review, or trigger 3DS
  2. "I don't recognize this charge"The statement name confuses buyersFix the customer-facing business name in the Dashboard
  3. "Item not received"No proof of deliveryKeep tracking and delivery receipts; signature on large orders
  4. Disputes on recurring chargesCustomers didn't expect the renewalWritten permission with amount, frequency and duration

each fix maps to one kind of dispute

Based on Square Support, Manage payment disputes and Prevent payment disputes, read November 3, 2026.

A few Square specifics are worth knowing3Square Support, Prevent payment disputes, read November 3, 2026:

  • Risk Manager can decline a payment, alert you to review it, or trigger 3D Secure on the buyer when it detects risky activity on online payments. It can also act on billing and shipping ZIP code mismatches.
  • In person, insert or tap chip cards: "You are automatically liable for any fraudulent transactions, if you swipe a chip card rather than using a chip reader."
  • Receipts and descriptions: itemized receipts, your contact details, and your refund and cancellation policy written on the receipt or contract.
  • Never ask a customer to waive dispute rights: Square calls it "a card network violation".

Refunding before the bank does is still your fastest fix. Square lets you refund "up to one hundred and twenty (120) days from the day you accepted the payment"1Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 19 to 22, 34 and 37, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026. The full method, by reason code: how to prevent chargebacks.

Watch out

Spreading sales across several Square accounts, business names or processors to stay under a threshold is evasion. Visa can fine the acquirer up to $25,000 per merchant per month for altering merchant data to avoid its monitoring programs8Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, section 12.5.3.2, edition April 18, 2026. Bring the disputes down instead.

How Tagada helps

Fewer disputes, and no single point of failure

  • Fraud stopped before it turns into a dispute: "Native 3DS2, device intelligence, and rules engine: approve real customers, block the rest."
  • More than one processor: "Every transaction is scored against your live MID network in real time." A review on one account doesn't stop every sale.
  • A vault you own: "Your PCI-tokenized cards, your customer profiles, your subscription data, all portable." Switch processors without re-onboarding customers.
  • Onboarding: "One KYC. One signed package." TagadaPay says most merchants are live in under 24 hours.
  • Support: "24/7 human support on Slack Connect."

Frequently asked questions

What is Square's chargeback threshold?

Square doesn't publish one. Its terms let it act when it believes you "might incur, or you are incurring, an excessive amount of Chargebacks". The published levels are the networks': Visa VAMP at 1.5% and 1,500 disputes and fraud reports a month in the US, Mastercard ECM at 1.5% and 100 chargebacks.

Will Square deactivate my account for chargebacks?

It can. Excessive chargebacks let Square add fees, set a reserve, delay payouts, or suspend or terminate the Payment Services. Section 37 also lets Square end the service "at any time for any reason". Chargebacks raised after the end are still yours to pay.

How long does Square take to resolve a dispute?

You have 7 days from the first email to send your evidence. If you challenge, the card-issuing bank can take up to 90 days from the start of the dispute to decide, and Square can't speed it up. Afterpay disputes take up to 30 days.

Does Square charge a chargeback fee?

Not today. Square says there are no fees for its dispute management on chargebacks. If you lose, you lose the amount and the processing fees on that payment; if you win, both come back. The terms let Square introduce a fee for contesting disputes, with notice.

Can Square hold my money because of a chargeback?

Yes. Each disputed amount is held as soon as the dispute opens. Square can also withhold the amount of a dispute it thinks is likely, delay payouts while disputes are pending, and set a reserve "for any reason related to your use of the Services".
