Square Reserve: How Long It Lasts and How to Get It Released

How a Square rolling reserve works: why Square applied it, how long it lasts, the six-month review, what the terms allow, and how to get it lowered.

Article summary

TL;DR

A Square reserve is a rolling reserve: a share of each card payment is set aside and released on a schedule set in your reserve terms. Square notifies you before it starts and reviews the reserve after six months minimum. You keep taking payments. To get it lowered, bring disputes down and keep your processing regular.

  • Square uses "a 'rolling reserve,' in which card payments subject to a reserve have a percentage set aside and released on a rolling basis".
  • Square notifies you "before the reserve goes into effect", by email and in the Dashboard.
  • Reserves "only apply to card payments, not ACH bank transfers".
  • "Accounts with reserves will be reviewed after a minimum of six months", without a request from you.
  • Under the Payment Terms, last updated July 30, 2026, Square "may require a Reserve for any reason related to your use of the Services".

This guide covers Square's reserve only. For how reserves work at every processor, see rolling reserves: how they work. For every kind of Square hold, see Square holding your funds.

What a Square reserve is

It is your money, held back for a while, not a fee. Square says reserve funds "still belong to you and are only used if you are unable to cover a chargeback. If no chargebacks occur, you receive the full amount"1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.

Three things to know from the start:

Square says reserves let it serve sellers it "otherwise might not be able to", rather than deactivating them4Square Press, Why Square uses reserves, June 23, 2020, read November 3, 2026. In June 2020, it said "fewer than 0.3%" of its sellers had one4Square Press, Why Square uses reserves, June 23, 2020, read November 3, 2026.

Why Square put a reserve on your account

Square lists five factors1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026. Reserves also follow underwriting, which Square runs on businesses with more volume or risk3Square Support, Review underwriting requirements with Square, read November 3, 2026.

Factor, in Square's wordsWhat it usually looks like
"Prepayment for goods or services"Preorders, made-to-order goods, programs or events paid upfront
"Chargeback rates in your industry"Square names home contracting and repair, professional services, travel and tourism, and custom-made products such as furniture
"Chargeback rate for your account"Disputes rising, or not enough funds to support them
"Sporadic processing activity"Spikes in ticket size, volume or payment method
"New to Square"NoProcessing history yet

Square adds that you "may be able to process a certain amount of card payments each month before a reserve is held", or face "different reserve rates depending on the amount you've processed"1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026. Your terms say which.

Watch out

The Payment Terms go further than the help article. Square "may require a Reserve for any reason related to your use of the Services", in an amount "reasonably determined by us to cover potential losses"2Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 15, 20 and 21, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

How long a Square reserve lasts

Your reserve terms set a duration. Each card payment's reserved share comes back once that duration has passed1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.

Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.

Square doesn't publish a standard percentage or duration. The one notice published by a third party, reproduced by eSeller365 in May 2020, set 30% of each transaction, released "120 days after the original transaction date"5eSeller365, Square holding funds 120 days (Square email reproduced), May 4, 2020, updated July 25, 2021. Yours may differ: read your own terms.

What the Payment Terms add

Section 14 of the Payment Terms is the contract behind the help article2Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 15, 20 and 21, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026:

  • Square decides the amount and can change it. The reserve "may be raised, reduced or removed at any time by Square, in its sole discretion", based on payment history, a credit review or other factors.
  • It can be funded from your bank. If the reserve is short, Square may fund it from "any funding source associated with your Square Accounts", including your bank account.
  • Square holds a security interest in the reserve and can debit it "without prior notice to you" to collect what you owe.
  • No interest. "You will not receive interest or any other earnings on any funds that we handle for you" (section 15).

Two other clauses set reserves for chargebacks. Section 20 lets Square withhold "the amount of the potential Chargeback" when it expects one. Section 21 allows "creating a Reserve" for excessive chargebacks, actual or expected2Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 12, 14, 15, 20 and 21, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

Reserve, chargeback hold or deferred payout?

Square holds money in several ways. Each ends differently.

How to get a Square reserve lowered or removed

Square's help article describes no appeal form for reserves. The review comes on its own, after six months minimum, and checks the same factors as at the start: "Frequency of prepayment for goods or services", "Chargeback rates for your account", "Sale documentation" and "Regular processing activity"1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026. Prepare for those four.

  1. Read your terms. Note the percentage, the duration, any monthly amount before the reserve applies, and each release date1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.
  2. Cut disputes. Your account's chargeback rate is a factor at the start and at the review1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.
  3. Keep processing regular. Avoid spikes in ticket size or volume, or warn Square before a launch1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.
  4. Shorten the gap before delivery. Less prepayment means less risk in Square's eyes1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.
  5. Keep sale documentation ready: invoices, delivery proof, customer exchanges. Square may "reach out to you to collect additional information"1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.
  6. Have bank statements and financial statements ready. Square's underwriters ask for the last three months of business bank statements and year-end financials3Square Support, Review underwriting requirements with Square, read November 3, 2026.

Square also names two ways to receive money outside the reserve: let customers pay by ACH bank transfer, or refund a card payment and take another form of payment, which "releases the funds in the reserve"1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 20264Square Press, Why Square uses reserves, June 23, 2020, read November 3, 2026. Do it with the customer's agreement, and only for real orders.

When you stop processing on Square

Square tells you before a reserve starts "so you can choose whether to continue processing with us under these new conditions"1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026. If you stop, the reserve doesn't come back at once: each share is released on its own date1Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.

Don't deactivate the account to speed it up. Square warns that after you deactivate, "you will not be able to access any of your payment history or account information"9Square Support, Deactivate your Square account, read November 3, 2026. Keep it open to answer disputes. If Square ends the relationship, read Square deactivated your account.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Square hold a reserve?

For the duration in your reserve terms, shown on the Reserve Dashboard with every upcoming release. Square doesn't publish a standard length. It reviews accounts with reserves "after a minimum of six months" and can release funds early if it removes the reserve.

Will I get my Square reserve back?

Yes, minus what it covered. Square says reserve funds "are only used if you are unable to cover a chargeback. If no chargebacks occur, you receive the full amount". Each share is released after its duration, and refunding a reserved payment releases its share at once.

What percentage does Square hold in reserve?

Square doesn't publish one. Your rate is in the email and on the Reserve Dashboard, and can vary with the amount you process. A Square notice reproduced by eSeller365 in 2020 set 30% for 120 days; treat it as one example, not a rule.

Can I appeal a Square reserve?

Square's help article describes no appeal form. Square reviews the reserve itself "after a minimum of six months", looking at prepayment, chargeback rates, sale documentation and regular processing. You can contact Square before then, with statements and delivery proof ready.

Does a Square reserve stop me from accepting payments?

No. A reserve holds part of each card payment but lets you keep selling. A payment limit is different: once you reach it, "any additional transactions that your customers attempt will be declined".
