Does Square charge high-risk businesses more?

Not through a published surcharge. Square's fee schedule has one set of rates per plan, the same for every business on that plan1Square, Pricing (United States), read November 3, 20262Square Support, Learn about Square fees, read November 3, 2026. Nothing on it is labeled high risk.

The difference sits in the Payment Terms. When Square believes you are incurring, or might incur, excessive chargebacks, it may set "additional conditions", including4Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 4, 14, 15 and 20 to 22, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026:

  • "establishing new processing fees";
  • "creating a Reserve" to cover expected chargebacks and fees;
  • "delaying payouts";
  • "terminating or suspending the Payment Services".

And if your business is on Square's unsupported list, there is no price at all. Check it first: Square prohibited businesses.

When Square Plus pays for itself

Plus costs $49 a month per location and saves 0.4% on online and invoice payments1Square, Pricing (United States), read November 3, 2026. The break-even is $12,250 of online card sales a month: $49 ÷ 0.004.

The costs that rise with risk

Some costs grow with your dispute and fraud levels, not your volume. Square's list is shorter than most processors', but its terms keep room to add to it.

The lost sale is the real cost of a dispute. The cost you don't see on the invoice: cash held

A reserve isn't a fee. But money you can't spend on stock or ads costs you all the same, and Square has three ways to hold it.

How Square reserves work and how to get them released: Square reserve.

A month on Square, worked out

The effective rate is every fee in a month divided by card sales. Here it is for an online subscription brand on Square Plus.

Line, one monthAmount
Card sales$50,000 from 1,000 orders
700 first orders online, 2.9% + 30¢ on $35,000$1,015 + $210
300 renewals on cards on file, 3.5% + 15¢ on $15,000$525 + $45
International cards, 1.5% on $5,000$75
Square Plus plan$49
8 disputes received$0 in Square fees
Total fees$1,919
Effective rate3.84%

Example

These are illustrative assumptions, not a quote. On Square Free, the same month costs $2,010, or 4.02%. The disputes still cost the sales you lose. And 8 disputes on 1,000 payments is 0.8%. Square publishes no threshold, but it names your account's chargeback rate among its reasons for a reserve6Square Support, Manage payment reserves with Square, read November 3, 2026.

If Square then set a 10% rolling reserve held 90 days, about three months of it would be locked at any time:

Square or a high-risk merchant account?

Square looks simpler on the rate card. A high-risk account prices the risk upfront, in a rate, a monthly fee and a stated reserve. The figures below are those processors' own, not Tagada's.

Verdict

Square is the cheaper choice for a supported business with steady sales and few disputes, especially on Plus above $12,250 a month online. Once your model sits near Square's list, or disputes climb, a reserve, a limit or a deactivation weighs more than the rate. Many brands keep both: Square for what it supports, and an underwritten account for the rest.

Comparing two quotes line by line: high-risk processing fees.

Frequently asked questions

Does Square charge more for high-risk businesses?

Not on its fee schedule: each plan has one set of rates. Risk costs you elsewhere. With excessive chargebacks, Square's terms allow "new processing fees", a reserve, delayed payouts or termination. And businesses on its unsupported list can't use Square at any price.

How much does Square charge for online payments?

In the US, 3.3% + 30¢ on Square Free and 2.9% + 30¢ on Square Plus and Premium, for online and invoice payments. Payments through Square's APIs cost 2.9% + 30¢ on every plan. Saved cards cost 3.5% + 15¢, and foreign cards add 1.5%.

Does Square charge a chargeback fee?

No dispute fee: "There are no fees for dispute management services for chargebacks". You still lose the disputed amount if the bank rules against you. Square's terms let it recover network fines, charge "new processing fees" for excessive chargebacks, and charge for dispute help after notice.

Is Square cheaper than a high-risk merchant account?

On the rate card, often yes: 2.9% + 30¢ online on Plus, no dispute fee. High-risk providers publish 3.49% to 3.95% plus a monthly fee (PaymentCloud). But Square doesn't support subscription offers, infomercials or upsell funnels, and it can hold cash or deactivate after the fact.

When can I get custom pricing from Square?

Square says to contact sales "If your annual sales exceed $250,000". Below that, you pay the published rates for your plan. Custom rates don't change what Square supports: the unsupported list and the reserve terms still apply.
