Square Holding Your Funds: Causes and Fixes

Why Square is holding your money: account reviews, information requests, disputes, reserves, limits and deactivation, with Square's own timelines.

Article summary

TL;DR

Square holds funds for seven main reasons: an account review, an unanswered information request, a dispute, an expected chargeback, a rolling reserve, an investigation, or a deactivation. Reviews usually take one business day. Read the email and the Dashboard banner, answer the same day, and route new sales elsewhere if the hold drags on.

  • When something looks unusual, Square suspends "all transfers", instant ones included, and says "We usually complete these reviews within one business day".
  • Once you submit an information request, Square reviews it "within 1-2 business days".
  • Disputed amounts are held "immediately", from your balance or by debiting your bank.
  • The Payment Terms, last updated July 30, 2026, let Square defer payouts "temporarily or indefinitely" during an investigation.
  • After a deactivation, an appeal, when offered, is "typically reviewed within 48 hours"; if approved, "Any held funds will be released".

Not a hold: timing and transfer limits

Before you call it a hold, rule these out. Square says it doesn't "hold funds based on the amount, frequency, or type of transaction" on its standard or custom schedules4Square Support, Set up and edit transfer options, read November 3, 2026.

Account review and information requests

This is the most common hold, and the shortest. Square says that when "something appears out of the ordinary", it "will place a hold on any upcoming transfers" and contact you3Square Support, Understand Square's business restrictions, read November 3, 2026.

What Square usually asks for: "signed receipts, bank statements, or other forms of verification"3Square Support, Understand Square's business restrictions, read November 3, 2026. Its information request form can also cover the goods or services you sell, documents about you or your business, and documents about specific transactions2Square Support, Manage information requests, read November 3, 2026.

The Payment Terms back this up: if you refuse a request for information or an inspection, "your Square Account may be suspended or terminated"9Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 10, 12, 14 and 20, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

Disputes and expected chargebacks

A dispute freezes its own amount, separate from the rest of your balance. When the card issuer notifies Square, Square places "an immediate hold on the disputed funds by withholding funds from your Square balance or debiting your linked bank account"5Square Support, Manage payment disputes, read November 3, 2026.

Square can also act before a dispute exists. If it "reasonably believe[s] that a Chargeback is likely", it may withhold the amount until a chargeback arrives, the dispute window expires, or it decides none will occur9Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 10, 12, 14 and 20, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026. With pending chargebacks, it "may delay payouts"9Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 10, 12, 14 and 20, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

Deferred payouts and deactivation

These are the long holds. Under section 12 of the Payment Terms, Square "may defer payout or restrict access to your Proceeds, temporarily or indefinitely", to investigate or resolve a dispute, including "suspected fraud, unauthorized transactions, or other activity that may present risk"9Square, Payment Terms (US), sections 10, 12, 14 and 20, last updated July 30, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

How to get paid

  1. Read the email and the banner. They name the hold and what Square needs3Square Support, Understand Square's business restrictions, read November 3, 2026.
  2. Submit every information request the same day, with every question answered. Review takes 1 to 2 business days after that2Square Support, Manage information requests, read November 3, 2026.
  3. Answer disputes on time, with invoices, delivery proof and customer exchanges2Square Support, Manage information requests, read November 3, 20265Square Support, Manage payment disputes, read November 3, 2026.
  4. Keep enough money in your linked bank account. Square can debit it for disputes, and isn't liable for overdraft fees2Square Support, Manage information requests, read November 3, 20265Square Support, Manage payment disputes, read November 3, 2026.
  5. Appeal if you're offered an appeal. Describe your products, add documents, and say how you fixed the concern8Square Support, Appeal a deactivation of your Square account, read November 3, 2026.
  6. Route new sales elsewhere if the hold is long. A second, declared processor keeps cash coming. See multiple merchant accounts.

Square releases funds on its own schedules and on evidence. Work on what you control first.

Plan cash around a hold

Budget with the slowest money you have, not the fastest. Held balances rarely come back in one block.

Illustrative example: one Square account with three holds at once.

In this example, $5,000 is a transfer held for an information request you answered, $7,000 a disputed amount won 45 days later, and $12,000 a reserve released on its 90-day schedule. Plan stock and ad spend on the last date, not the first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Square holding my money?

Usually because a review flagged something "out of the ordinary", or a request for information is waiting for you. Other causes are a dispute, an expected chargeback, a reserve, an investigation or a deactivation. The email and the Dashboard banner say which one.

How long can Square hold my funds?

It depends on the hold. Reviews usually take one business day, and documents are reviewed in 1 to 2 business days. Disputes last until the bank decides. Under its Payment Terms, Square can defer payouts "temporarily or indefinitely" during an investigation.

Why are my Square transfers suspended?

Square suspends all transfers, instant ones included, when its system "notices something that appears out of the ordinary", then usually finishes within one business day. If it needs more, it emails you an information request. Transfers stay blocked until you submit it.

What documents does Square ask for during a review?

Typically "signed receipts, bank statements, or other forms of verification". The form can also ask about the products or services you sell, your identity and business, and specific transactions.

Square deactivated my account. When do I get my money?

If your email offers an appeal and Square approves it, "Any held funds will be released". If not, Square holds the balance for a period it doesn't publish; PaymentCloud reports about 90 days. Full steps: Square deactivated your account.
