The Info Product Business Tech Stack: Checkout, Subscriptions, Email and Tracking
The 7 layers of an info product tech stack, platform fees compared (November 2026), and the 3 decisions that are hard to undo: cards, access, proof.
Article summary
TL;DR
An info product business (courses, coaching, memberships, ebooks) runs on seven layers: sales pages, checkout and offers, payments, billing, course delivery, email, and tracking. Most tools are easy to swap. Three decisions are not: who processes payments and holds the cards, how a payment turns access on and off, and where proof of access is stored. Settle those first.
- Platform fees vary widely: Teachable charges 7.5% per sale on its Starter plan, Podia 5% on Mover, Stan none (November 2026).
- Stripe does not name courses or coaching in its restricted list; it prohibits "get rich quick" schemes and "high-pressure upselling" (read November 2, 2026).
- To fight a Visa fraud dispute on digital goods, you need 2 or more data points such as IP, device or logins after purchase (Visa rules, October 2026).
- Visa forbids charging interest on merchant payment plans and requires a separate consent before storing the card.
- Leaving a platform is a project: Kajabi says most subscription and payment plan migrations take "1 to 3 weeks", and "PayPal subscriptions cannot be migrated at this time" (read November 3, 2026).

This guide is part of our playbook on the best ecommerce platform for info product businesses. The general guide, for any business: custom ecommerce checkout.
The 7 layers of an info product stack
Each layer has one job. The third column is what changes when what you sell is access, not a parcel.
| Layer | Its job | What info products need | Examples of tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Sales pages | Explain the offer, capture leads | Clear outcome without income promises; refund terms visible | Funnel builders, site builders |
| 2. Checkout and offers | Turn visits into orders | Order bumps, one-click upsells, payment plans | Native checkout, funnel and checkout tools |
| 3. Payments | Take the money | A processor that understands your offer, plus a backup | Stripe, PayPal, platform payments |
| 4. Billing | Renewals and installments | Memberships, fixed payment plans, retries on failure | Platform billing, subscription tools |
| 5. Delivery | Host the course or community | Access granted on payment, removed on failure or refund; login logs | Kajabi, Teachable, Thinkific, Circle |
| 6. Email and SMS | Onboard, remind, recover | Welcome and access emails, payment reminders, failed payment notices | Kit, ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo |
| 7. Tracking | Tell ad platforms what sold | Server-side purchase events, upsells counted | Meta CAPI, Google, TikTok |

Highlighted: the links that are hard to undo.
Payment turns access on, failure suspends it, logins prove it.
All-in-one platform or separate tools?
An all-in-one course platform covers layers 1, 4, 5 and 6 with one login. You pay for it with platform fees, and you often accept its checkout and its payment provider.
| Platform | Monthly plan (monthly billing) | Platform fee per sale |
|---|---|---|
| Kajabi | Basic $179, Growth $249, Pro $499 | None with Kajabi Payments ("Kajabi does not take a revenue share as a platform"); 2%, 1% or 0.5% with a third-party processor (Kajabi)1Kajabi, Pricing, read November 2, 2026 |
| Teachable | Starter $39, Builder $89, Growth $189 | 7.5% on Starter, 0% above ("Standard payment processing fees may still apply") (Teachable)2Teachable, Pricing, read November 2, 2026 |
| Podia | Mover $49, Shaker $99, Earthquaker $179 | 5% on Mover, none above (Podia)3Podia, Pricing, read November 2, 2026 |

Separate tools make sense when one of these is true:
Fig. 2Three reasons to split the stack
Your offers outgrow the platform checkout
Bumps, upsell sequences, A/B tests, several payment plans.
You need your own processor, or more than one
A platform that forces its payment provider leaves you with no backup.
You sell beyond courses
Coaching, events, physical workbooks, a community.
Watch out
The more tools you connect, the more places access can break. A student who paid and cannot log in becomes a refund request, then a dispute.
How many tools is normal? Vendors give different answers: FitBudd writes that "Most online coaches use 4-6 tools"12FitBudd, The 2026 Coaching Tech Stack, updated October 9, 2026 (vendor article); The Coaches Console says the average coach pays for "6-8 different software tools" and "Most could get by with three"13The Coaches Console, The coaching tech stack, February 10, 2026 (vendor article). Count jobs, not logos: one tool can cover several layers.
The 3 decisions that are hard to undo
1. Who processes payments, and who holds the cards. Stripe does not name courses or coaching in its list. It prohibits offers that "promise fast and easy money", "high-pressure upselling" and "fake testimonials"5Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026. If the cards sit with a platform you cannot leave, changing processors means asking every member and plan payer to re-enter a card.
Check what a move actually carries over:
- Stripe exports cards, not billing. It transfers card data only "to another PCI DSS Level 1-compliant payment processor", and "doesn't export your account's payment history, subscriptions, or other objects"15Stripe Docs, Request a payment data export, read November 3, 2026.
- Platform migrations have gaps. Moving Stripe plans into Kajabi Payments skips paused and past-due subscriptions, doesn't support Link or ACH, and can't move PayPal subscriptions14Kajabi Help Center, Migrate Stripe subscriptions & payment plans to Kajabi Payments, read November 3, 2026.
- It takes time. "Most migrations are completed within 1 to 3 weeks of the initial request" (Kajabi)14Kajabi Help Center, Migrate Stripe subscriptions & payment plans to Kajabi Payments, read November 3, 2026.

2. How a payment turns access on and off. Access should follow billing events, not a manual check: grant on payment, suspend on failure, remove on refund. Decide when "failure" starts. On Kajabi Payments, the default waits: Stripe retries "up to 4 times over the course of several weeks", then the plan is canceled, "which revokes product access"; you can switch to revoking after the first failed payment16Kajabi Help Center, How to manage failed payments with Kajabi Payments, read November 3, 2026. The details are in how to cut access when a payment fails.
3. Where proof of access lives. For a Visa fraud dispute on digital goods, the compelling evidence list includes the IP address, device ID, and proof the buyer used your site or app "on or after the Transaction Date"; you need 2 or more6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, Table 11-7 (Compelling Evidence, digital goods) and Tables 5-19 to 5-21 (installment transactions). PayPal accepts "a system of record" showing the item was sent or "accessed by the recipient"7PayPal, Seller Protection, updated January 26, 2026. If your course tool keeps no login history you can export, you have nothing to send.
How the layers connect
The stack works when each billing event triggers the right action everywhere.
| Event | Delivery | Tracking | |
|---|---|---|---|
| First payment | Grant access, log it | Welcome and login email | Purchase event from the server, deduplicated with the pixel8Meta for Developers, Deduplicate Pixel and server events, read October 26, 2026 |
| Upsell accepted | Add the module or program | Access email for the upsell | Separate purchase event |
| Installment or renewal fails | Keep access during retries, then suspend | Card update request | None |
| Plan completed | Keep full access | Confirmation | None |
| Refund or cancellation | Remove access | Confirmation | Refund recorded |

Event, then delivery, then email.
Payment plans add their own rules. Visa requires the plan terms, total price and schedule to be shown "separately from the general purchase terms" and accepted before you store the card, and no interest6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, Table 11-7 (Compelling Evidence, digital goods) and Tables 5-19 to 5-21 (installment transactions). See payment plans for info products.
The stack by stage
| Stage | What you need | What can wait |
|---|---|---|
| First launch | One course platform, a checkout, one processor, a welcome email, server-side purchase tracking | Separate funnel tools, SMS |
| Proven offer | Order bump and upsell, a payment plan, failed payment emails, login logs you can export | Multi-touch attribution |
| Scale | A backup processor and routing, A/B tests, a membership with retention offers, access driven by webhooks | Anything that duplicates billing or tracking |
