Ad Attribution for Supplement Brands
How supplement brands measure which ads really sell: store data, MER, new-customer CAC, post-purchase surveys and incrementality tests.
Article summary
TL;DR
Don't run a supplement brand on the ROAS that Meta, Google or TikTok report. Each platform credits itself, and health restrictions can hide purchases from Meta. Use your store orders as the truth, watch MER (revenue ÷ total ad spend) and the cost per new customer, ask buyers where they heard of you, and test the big channels with holdouts before you scale them.
- Platforms report overlapping credit for the same sale; only store orders add up.
- MER, total revenue divided by total ad spend, is an attribution-agnostic check on the whole system.
- Renewals and reorders inflate ROAS: one 2026 agency report puts supplement first-purchase ROAS at 2.3x against 9.1x for repeat customers (method not published).
- Meta can restrict purchase optimization for health and wellness businesses, which also distorts its reporting.
- New-customer CAC is the number that decides whether ads pay back: $80 to $130 blended for supplements, according to Eightx.

This guide is part of our playbook on the best ecommerce platform for supplement brands. Getting the purchase data right comes first: server-side tracking for supplement brands.
Why attribution is harder for supplements
- Repeat orders and renewals look like ad revenue in blended reports, but most were not caused by this month's ads.
- Health data restrictions on Meta can block purchase events and optimization3PixelFlow, Meta's health and wellness restrictions and tracking, read October 26, 2026 (vendor documentation).
- Long decision cycles: people see an ad, read reviews, then buy days later from another device.
- Creators and podcasts drive sales that no pixel sees.
The 5 numbers that matter
New-customer CAC is the number that decides whether ads pay back: Eightx puts it at $80 to $130 blended for supplements.6Eightx, Supplement CAC and payback benchmarks 2026, June 7, 2026
| Number | Formula | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Store revenue and orders | From your store, by day | The truth everything else is checked against |
| MER | Total revenue ÷ total ad spend | Whether the whole system is efficient1Admetrics, Marketing attribution for DTC e-commerce: the complete buying guide, 2026 |
| New-customer CAC | Total ad spend ÷ new customers | Whether acquisition pays back |
| First-order ROAS | First-order revenue ÷ ad spend | Ad efficiency without renewals |
| Platform ROAS | As reported by each platform | Relative performance inside one platform |

Watch out
A 9x ROAS that comes mostly from renewals tells you nothing about whether your ads find new customers. The same 2026 report puts supplement first-purchase ROAS near 2.3x2ATTN Agency, 2026 ROAS benchmarks by industry vertical, 2026 (methodology not published). Separate first orders from repeat revenue before judging any campaign.
Which number for which decision
| Decision | Use |
|---|---|
| Raise or cut the total ad budget | MER and new-customer CAC against payback |
| Move budget between platforms | New-customer CAC by platform, checked with surveys and tests |
| Choose between campaigns inside Meta | Platform-reported results, within Meta only |
| Choose between creatives | Platform results plus first-order conversion |
| Decide if a channel works at all | An incrementality test |

Ask buyers: the post-purchase survey
A one-question survey on the thank-you page catches what tracking misses: podcasts, creators, word of mouth5Fairing, Ecommerce experts' most valuable post-purchase survey questions, read October 26, 2026.
- Ask one question: "Where did you first hear about us?"
- Offer a short list of your channels, plus "Other".
- Ask only new customers, so renewals don't skew it.
- Compare with platform claims each month: if Meta claims 70% of sales and buyers name Meta 30% of the time, investigate.

Incrementality: does the channel cause sales?
An incrementality test turns a channel off for part of the audience or part of the country, and compares sales.
- Pick one channel with enough spend, often Meta prospecting or branded search.
- Hold out a share of the audience or a group of regions.
- Run for two to four weeks.
- Compare new customers between the exposed and held-out groups.
- Use the result to discount or credit that channel's platform-reported numbers1Admetrics, Marketing attribution for DTC e-commerce: the complete buying guide, 2026.

| 1 | Reconcile store orders with each platform's reported purchases |
| 2 | Split revenue into first orders, reorders and renewals |
| 3 | Compute MER and new-customer CAC |
| 4 | Read the survey answers for new customers |
| 5 | Plan one incrementality test per quarter on your biggest channel |
