Can You Sell Prescription Drugs on Amazon, eBay, Facebook or TikTok Shop?

Amazon, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Etsy and TikTok Shop ban prescription drugs from third-party sellers. Exact rules, OTC limits, what to do instead.

Article summary

No, all five prohibit it

TL;DR

No. Amazon, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Etsy and TikTok Shop all prohibit prescription drugs from third-party sellers, licensed pharmacy or not. Amazon fills prescriptions only through its own pharmacy. If you're a licensed pharmacy, your channel is your own website, with a payment processor that has approved you for prescription sales.

  • Amazon lists "Prescription drugs and their active ingredients" among products that "can't be sold in the Amazon store under any circumstances" (April 1, 2026).
  • Meta's Commerce Policies bar "the buying, selling or trading of drugs, drug paraphernalia or prescription products" on Marketplace, Shops and WhatsApp catalogs (read November 2, 2026).
  • TikTok Shop US prohibits "Prescription drugs and products requiring authorization or supervision from a licensed healthcare provider" (updated October 29, 2026).
  • Amazon Pay excludes "online or mail order pharmacies, prescription drugs" too (updated July 31, 2026).

Marketplace by marketplace

All five say no to third-party prescription sales. None offers an exception for licensed pharmacies.

No exception for licensed pharmacies.

Amazon, eBay, Meta, Etsy and TikTok Shop policies, dated in the table above.

Etsy adds a line worth noting: "Possible legal restrictions aside, these items are not in the spirit of Etsy"4Etsy, Prohibited items policy, archived October 22, 2026. Being licensed doesn't change its answer.

Meta's rule covers more than Marketplace. Commerce content means "any attempt to buy, sell or trade products" on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger services designed for commerce, including Shops and the WhatsApp Business catalog3Meta, Commerce Policies, read November 2, 2026. Advertising is a separate set of rules: can you advertise prescription drugs on Facebook, Google and TikTok?

Over-the-counter is a different answer

The marketplaces draw the line at the prescription. Some leave room for over-the-counter products, with conditions.

MarketplaceOver-the-counter medication
AmazonNot on the prescription list quoted above; sold within Amazon's health and personal care category rules1Amazon, How to sell health and personal care products, April 1, 2026
eBayeBay restricts "the listing of other drugs"; over-the-counter listings "must follow guidelines"2eBay, Prescription and over-the-counter drugs policy, archived June 14, 2026
TikTok Shop"Certain over-the-counter (OTC) medication may be permitted subject to additional requirements"5TikTok Shop US, Prohibited Products Policy, updated October 29, 2026
EtsyMedical drugs covered by the prohibition4Etsy, Prohibited items policy, archived October 22, 2026

If you sell both, keep the over-the-counter range separate from anything that needs a prescription. A listing that mixes the two falls under the prescription rule.

Why Amazon sells prescriptions and you can't

Amazon runs its own pharmacy. Amazon Pharmacy says "Our U.S.-licensed pharmacists check every order before it goes out"7Amazon Pharmacy, read November 2, 2026. That's Amazon acting as the licensed pharmacy, not a marketplace open to sellers.

US law limits who can hand over a prescription drug. It "shall be dispensed only" on a practitioner's prescription, and dispensing otherwise makes the drug "misbranded while held for sale"821 U.S.C. § 353(b)(1). A marketplace can't check that chain for thousands of sellers, so it bans the category.

Watch out

For individuals, reselling your own prescription on any of these sites breaks both the platform rules and federal law821 U.S.C. § 353(b)(1). The FDA flags any site that lets you "buy medicine without a prescription from your doctor"9FDA, BeSafeRx: Frequently Asked Questions, content current as of September 21, 2020. Marketplace payment buttons aren't an option either

Leaving the marketplace doesn't mean you can use its checkout button. Amazon Pay's Acceptable Use Policy, under "Drugs, Drug Paraphernalia, and Dietary Supplements", covers "illegal drugs and controlled substances, online or mail order pharmacies, prescription drugs"6Amazon Pay, Acceptable Use Policy, updated July 31, 2026.

The same pattern repeats with mainstream processors: Shopify Payments excludes "prescription drugs"11Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments eligibility, read November 2, 2026, and Stripe reviews pharmacies as a restricted business10Stripe, Restricted and prohibited businesses, updated September 22, 2026.

Selling from your own site

For a licensed pharmacy, the realistic channel is a store you control. Four steps come before your first order.

  1. Licenses for your home state and each state you ship to: is it legal to sell prescription drugs online?
  2. A certification such as LegitScript or NABP, which processors and ad platforms ask for: NABP .pharmacy or LegitScript
  3. A processor approved for pharmacies: does Stripe allow prescription drugs? or how to get an online pharmacy merchant account approved
  4. A checkout that waits for the prescription: prescription-gated checkout

Licenses and certification first; the processor and the checkout follow.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sell prescription drugs on Amazon?

No, not as a third-party seller. Amazon lists "Prescription drugs and their active ingredients" and "Products available only by prescription" among prohibited products. Prescriptions on Amazon are filled by Amazon Pharmacy, Amazon's own licensed pharmacy.

Can you sell prescription drugs on Facebook Marketplace?

No. Meta's Commerce Policies say commerce content "may not promote the buying, selling or trading of drugs, drug paraphernalia or prescription products". The rule covers Marketplace, Shops on Facebook and Instagram, and the WhatsApp Business catalog.

Can a licensed pharmacy sell on eBay?

No. eBay's policy says "Prescription drugs, or products containing prescription-strength medication, aren't allowed" and makes no exception for licensed sellers. Over-the-counter products are restricted under the same policy rather than banned.

Can you sell over-the-counter medicine on TikTok Shop?

Sometimes. TikTok Shop US prohibits prescription drugs but says "Certain over-the-counter (OTC) medication may be permitted subject to additional requirements". Check the category requirements before listing.

Is it illegal to resell my own prescription online?

Yes, in the US. A prescription drug "shall be dispensed only" on a practitioner's prescription; dispensing it any other way makes it misbranded. Every marketplace on this page also bans the listing.
