Email Flows for Info Product Businesses
The email flows an info product business needs: launch, access, payment plan and membership emails, what card rules require, what never to promise.
Article summary
TL;DR
An info product business needs two sets of email flows. Marketing flows sell: welcome, launch, abandoned checkout, upsell and win-back. Account flows protect the sale: the access email, onboarding, payment plan and membership notices, and failed payment emails. Most course creators skip the second set, yet it wins disputes and keeps installments coming in.
- Flows get a 5.58% click rate against 1.69% for campaigns (Klaviyo, 183,000+ ecommerce customers, 2026).
- To defend a digital goods dispute, Visa asks for the date the product was provided plus data such as IP address, device ID or the buyer's email linked to their profile (rules of October 24, 2026).
- For a trial, introductory offer or one-off purchase followed by more charges, Visa expects a notice "at least 7 days before" the next charge.
- In April 2026, the FTC announced a $1.5 million order against Publishing.com over "false or unsubstantiated earnings claims" about its self-publishing programs; the FTC approved the final order on July 2, 2026.
- Marketing emails need a physical postal address and an opt-out honored within 10 business days (CAN-SPAM).

The core flows for an info product business
| Flow | Trigger | Timing | Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Welcome | Lead magnet or free signup | Right away, then 3 to 5 emails over 1 to 2 weeks | Trust, first purchase |
| 2. Launch | Cart opens | Daily during the open window, more in the last 48 hours | Sales during the launch |
| 3. Abandoned checkout | Checkout started, no order | Within the hour, then 1 day | Recover the order |
| 4. Access and onboarding | Payment confirmed | Right away, then days 1, 3 and 7 | Student logs in and starts |
| 5. Upsell or ascension | Course started or finished | After a first result in the course, not before | Next program, coaching, membership |
| 6. Win-back | NoLogin, membership canceled | 30 to 60 days of inactivity | Back to the course, or a clean exit |

The access email is also your proof of delivery
For a course, "delivery" means access. When a buyer says they never got it, your emails and login records are the only proof.
- Visa, digital goods: to answer a fraud dispute, you provide the date the product was provided and two or more of: IP address, device ID, the buyer's name and email linked to their profile, proof the profile was accessed, or proof the site was used "on or after the Transaction Date"2Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: table 11-7 item 4 (digital goods compelling evidence), tables 11-118 and 11-122 (dispute condition 13.5), table 5-19 (installments).
- PayPal, intangible goods: proof of delivery is "a system of record showing the date the item was sent" and that it was "Electronically sent to the recipient, including the recipient's address (email, IP, etc.)" or "Received or accessed by the recipient"3PayPal Seller Protection, updated January 26, 2026.

The access email plus login records: your proof the course was delivered.
So the access email should go out the moment payment clears, to the email used at checkout, with the login link. Keep the send log. Then log each login and each lesson opened. Disputes in detail: chargebacks for info product businesses.
Example
"Your access to [Course name] is ready. Log in here: [link]. Your account email: jane@… Your first lesson takes 12 minutes. Questions? Reply to this email."
Payment emails: plans, memberships and failed payments
Most course revenue arrives after the first payment. These emails keep it coming and keep disputes down.
| When | Why | |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase confirmation with the schedule | Right after checkout | Visa requires express consent to the total price, schedule and cancellation policy before a card is stored for installments2Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: table 11-7 item 4 (digital goods compelling evidence), tables 11-118 and 11-122 (dispute condition 13.5), table 5-19 (installments) |
| Membership sign-up confirmation | Right after subscribing | Mastercard expects a confirmation with how to cancel4Mastercard, Subscription/recurring payments and negative option billing merchants: FAQs, 2022 |
| Notice before the next charge | At least 7 days before, after a trial, intro price or one-off purchase | Visa dispute rule 13.52Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: table 11-7 item 4 (digital goods compelling evidence), tables 11-118 and 11-122 (dispute condition 13.5), table 5-19 (installments) |
| Installment reminder | A few days before each installment | Fewer declines, fewer "I forgot" disputes |
| Failed payment | Day 0, then on each retry | Card update link; tell them what happens to access |
| Annual reminder | Once a year | California, contracts since July 1, 20255California Business and Professions Code § 17602 (secondary source for the 2025 changes) |
| Cancellation confirmation | When access ends | Proof in disputes, and a clean exit |

Watch out
Check timing against the rules, not against your tool's default. Tagada's "subscription_rebill_upcoming" email goes out "3 days before the next billing cycle" by default11Tagada docs, Emails, read November 2, 2026. For an offer that starts with a trial or an introductory price, Visa's dispute rule looks for a notice at least 7 days before the charge2Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: table 11-7 item 4 (digital goods compelling evidence), tables 11-118 and 11-122 (dispute condition 13.5), table 5-19 (installments): set that one separately.

Launch sequences without pressure
Launch emails sell on a deadline. Keep the deadline real and the pressure honest.
A real close date
If the cart reopens next week at the same price, the "last chance" email is false.
Price, plan and refund terms in the email
Not only on the sales page.
No countdown resets
And no fake "only 3 seats left".

And "deceptive testimonials"10Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026. Your launch emails are part of what a processor reviews.
