SMS Flows for Info Product Businesses

Text flows for coaching programs and online courses: webinar and call reminders, launches, payment plan texts, plus TCPA consent and timing.

Article summary

TL;DR

For coaches and course creators, SMS works for short, time-bound messages: webinar and call reminders, the last hours of a launch, an abandoned checkout, the access link, and payment notices. Teaching and long sales arguments belong in email. Before the first marketing text, get written consent naming the phone number, and text between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. local time.

  • Autodialed marketing texts need "prior express written consent", and that consent cannot be a condition of purchase.
  • No telephone solicitation before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. at the recipient's local time.
  • Abandoned cart texts average a 10.3% click rate against 6.0% for emails (Klaviyo, October 2, 2026).
  • 90% of recovered failed payments come back within 10 days, so the first card update text goes out on day 0 (Recurly, April 2026).
  • A text that states an income level is an earnings claim under the FTC's definition.

Flow 5 matters more than it looks. A buyer who never logs in is the one most likely to ask for a refund or open a "not received" dispute. Disputes are covered in chargebacks for info product businesses.

Payment plan texts work with the retry schedule: see failed payment recovery for info product businesses.

Texting rules in the US come from the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), the FCC's rules and carrier registration.

RuleWhat it requires

Watch out

A coaching client or a past student has not, by buying, agreed to marketing texts. Some SMS vendors suggest an existing relationship is enough; for autodialed marketing texts, the federal rule asks for prior express written consent247 CFR 64.1200, Delivery restrictions, sections (a)(2), (c)(1) and (f)(9). Collect it with a separate, unchecked box. Some states add their own texting laws. This is general information, not legal advice.

Renewal and installment texts also touch card network rules: Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

What a text can't promise

A text is an ad under the same rules as your sales page. Short formats make claims sound stronger, not weaker.

Fig. 3Five rules for every launch text

  1. No income in the message

The FTC treats any statement of "a specific level or range of actual or potential sales, or gross or net income or profits" as an earnings claim816 CFR 437.1, Business Opportunity Rule, definitions, read November 2, 2026. "Students made $10k last month" is one.

  2. No money flaunting in launch texts

TikTok's ad rules ban "Ambiguous claims on how to get rich with no information as to how"9TikTok Ads, Deceptive practices policy, updated August 2025; the same text sent by SMS is read the same way by regulators.

  3. Real deadlines only

"Doors close at midnight" must be true.

  4. Say who you are

In the first words, and include "Reply STOP to opt out" in the welcome text and regularly after.

  5. One message

    One action, one link.

Example

"Brand: the live Q&A starts in 15 minutes. Join here: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out."

How Tagada helps

The billing events behind your reminder and failed payment texts

Tagada is the checkout and billing system that produces the events your texts react to:

  • Subscriptions and memberships with automatic retries; statuses include "trialing", "active", "past_due" and "paused" (subscriptions docs)
  • Events such as "subscription/rebillUpcoming", "subscription/pastDue" and "payment/failed", sent by webhook to your SMS tool (webhooks docs)
  • Checkout, one-click upsells, subscriptions and membership on the same funnel, so every link in a text lands on one page, with Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Server-side tracking to Meta, Google and TikTok, so sales that come back from a text are counted

Subscription billing is covered in subscription billing for info product businesses. "If you sell something real, we will get you paid." TagadaPay lists info products, coaching and online courses among its industries, with "enhanced review for regulated verticals"; "Most merchants are live under 24 hours", with "24/7 human support on Slack Connect"10TagadaPay, homepage, read November 2, 2026. Frequently asked questions

Does SMS marketing work for coaches?

For short, time-bound messages, yes: session and sales call reminders, webinar starts, a launch close, an abandoned checkout and payment notices. Klaviyo reports a 10.3% click rate for abandoned cart texts against 6.0% for emails. Keep teaching and long sales arguments in email.

Can I text my coaching clients without their consent?

Service texts about a session they booked are one thing; marketing texts are another. For autodialed marketing texts, the federal rule asks for prior express written consent that names the number and isn't a condition of purchase. Collect it separately, with an unchecked box.

What time can I send texts to my students?

Federal rules forbid telephone solicitations before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. at the recipient's local time. Some states are stricter. If you sell worldwide, schedule by each student's time zone, not yours.

Should I send webinar reminders by text?

Yes, if attendees opted in. Text 24 hours before and again shortly before the start, with the link and how to reschedule. Measure show-up rates with and without the texts to see their real effect.

Can I send payment plan reminders by text?

Yes. A reminder before each installment and a card update link on the day a payment fails are among the most useful texts you can send. Recurly reports that 90% of recovered failed payments come back within 10 days, so start on day 0.
