Abandoned Cart Recovery for Info Product Businesses

Why course buyers abandon checkout, recovery sequences for low-price products and high-ticket programs, and when a payment plan beats a discount.

Article summary

TL;DR

Most course and coaching checkouts are abandoned before payment. Recover part of them with a reminder within the hour, a second email the next day that answers the real objection (price, time, proof, a declined card), and a last one before a real deadline. High-ticket programs need a personal message or a call, and a payment plan before any discount.

  • The average documented cart abandonment rate is 70.22% (Baymard, 50 studies, September 2025).
  • 10% of US shoppers who abandoned had their card declined (Baymard); on a high-ticket program, that is a sale to save, not a lost lead.
  • Abandoned cart emails earn $6.77 per recipient on average; texts get a 10.3% click rate against 6.0% for emails (Klaviyo, October 2, 2026).
  • Kajabi automates one cart abandonment email, with a 1, 6, 10 or 24 hour delay (post modified October 2026).
  • Through Stripe, Affirm lists educational services (MCC 8299) as restricted and consulting (7392) as prohibited (read November 2, 2026).

Why course buyers abandon

Baymard's reasons are measured on ecommerce shoppers, not course buyers. They still map onto the objections a course checkout raises.

Course buyers add two objections of their own: time ("will I actually do it?") and proof ("will it work for someone like me?"). Answer them with the course outline, the time needed per week and the refund terms, not with income stories.

Two sequences: low-price products and high-ticket programs

A $49 ebook and a $3,000 coaching program don't deserve the same follow-up. Split your flow by price or product.

Sequences from the two tables above.

LifterLMS suggests shorter delays for low-cost offers and longer ones for high-ticket programs, and stops the emails as soon as the learner completes checkout4LifterLMS, Why abandoned course checkouts are more recoverable than you think, July 14, 2026 (vendor article). Kajabi's own tool sends a single email3Kajabi blog, How to save sales using abandon cart sequences, published November 27, 2018, modified October 22, 2026; the rest of the sequence lives in your email platform.

Price objections: payment plans before discounts

On a high-ticket program, "too expensive" often means "too much at once". A payment plan answers that without cutting the price.

  1. Show the plan on the sales page and in email 1

    Not only at checkout.

  2. Get consent to the whole schedule

Visa requires express consent to the total price, the schedule and the cancellation policy before the card is stored, shown separately from the general terms6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, tables 5-19 and 5-20.

  3. No interest, flat late fees only

For a "Partial Payment", Visa says the merchant "does not charge any interest" and any late fee "must be a flat fee"6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, tables 5-19 and 5-20.

  4. Check BNPL before you promise it

Through Stripe, Affirm lists MCC 8299 "Educational Services" as restricted and 7392 "Consulting, Public Relations" as prohibited5Stripe Docs, Affirm payments, read November 2, 2026. A coaching offer may not qualify.

Watch out

A declined card on a $2,000 checkout is not always a "no": the issuer may have stopped an unusual amount, or the buyer hit a card limit. Your email 1 should say "pay in installments" or "try another card", and your checkout should offer Apple Pay or Google Pay. Declines on the payment side: reducing payment declines for info product businesses.

Launch carts: real deadlines only

During a launch, the cart close does the selling. Keep it honest.

  • A real close date. If the cart reopens next week at the same price, the "last chance" email is false.
  • Real seats only. "Only 5 coaching spots left" must be true on the day you send it.
  • No pressure tactics. Stripe prohibits businesses that "use high-pressure upselling" or "deceptive testimonials"7Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026, and reads your sales emails as part of your offer.
  • After the close, move abandoners to a nurture flow, not a discount.

You can only recover a checkout if you know who left it.

The last line matters for info products: a buyer pushed by a fake deadline is more likely to ask for a refund or dispute the charge.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recover abandoned carts for my online course?

Send a first email within an hour with a link back to the checkout, a second the next day that answers one objection (outline, sample lesson, refund terms), and a last one before a real deadline. For high-ticket programs, add a personal message or a call invitation and offer a payment plan.

How many abandoned cart emails should I send?

Three for a low-price product, over about three days. Four or five for a high-ticket program, over about a week, including a personal message. Kajabi suggests at least one email a day for three to four days. Stop as soon as the person buys.

Should I offer a discount in abandoned cart emails?

Not in the first emails, and rarely on a high-ticket program. A payment plan answers most price objections without cutting the price. If you use an incentive, keep it for the last email and make it a real, one-time offer.

Does Kajabi send abandoned cart emails?

Yes, one. Kajabi says "you can automate sending one cart abandonment email", with a delay of 1, 6, 10 or 24 hours after the purchase attempt. For a full sequence, connect the abandoned checkout to your email platform.

Can I use Affirm or Klarna for a coaching program?

Check first. Through Stripe, Affirm lists educational services (8299) as restricted and consulting (7392) as prohibited. Many creators offer their own interest-free payment plan instead, which follows Visa's installment rules.
