Checkout Optimization for Info Product Businesses

How to build a checkout for courses, coaching and memberships: total price, payment plans, subscription terms, EU waiver, dispute evidence.

Article summary

TL;DR

A checkout for a course, coaching program or membership should ask for one decision: show the total price and the payment options (pay in full, a payment plan, a membership) with their exact terms, and nothing else to click. Create the student account after payment. Collect the email, IP and device you'll need if a buyer disputes the charge.

  • 18% of US shoppers who abandoned a checkout left because the site required an account (Baymard, September 2025).
  • The average checkout had 11.3 form fields in 2024; Baymard says most sites need 8.
  • Visa requires the payment-plan agreement to be shown "separately from the general purchase terms and conditions" and accepted before the card is stored (October 2026 rules).
  • An interest-free plan of 4 installments or fewer stays outside the Regulation Z definition of "creditor".
  • The FTC announced a settlement with Publishing.com in April 2026 over "false or unsubstantiated earnings claims" and testimonials presented as genuine, and approved the final order on July 2, 2026 ($1.5 million).

Why buyers leave a course checkout

Baymard's survey of US shoppers who abandoned a checkout gives the main reasons1Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025, read November 2, 2026. A course has no shipping, but the same fears apply.

The account issue is specific to courses. Your platform needs a login to deliver the course, so many checkouts ask for a password first. Move that step after payment and send the access link by email.

Payment plans and memberships on the checkout page

A plan or a membership is where a course checkout is most regulated. Put the terms on the page, not in a footer link.

  1. Show the plan as its own agreement

Visa requires the buyer's express consent to an agreement that lists the total price, the amount, currency, schedule and frequency of payments, and the cancellation and refund policy, shown "separately from the general purchase terms and conditions"3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19 and 5-20 (installments), 11-7 (Compelling Evidence), 11-93 (13.1), 11-118 and 11-122 (13.5).

  2. No interest

In a Visa installment plan, "the Merchant does not charge any interest, or imputed interest"; a late fee "must be a flat fee"3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19 and 5-20 (installments), 11-7 (Compelling Evidence), 11-93 (13.1), 11-118 and 11-122 (13.5).

  3. Watch the number of installments

Regulation Z defines a creditor as someone who regularly extends credit "payable by written agreement in more than four installments" or with a finance charge5CFPB, Regulation Z, 12 CFR 1026.2(a)(17), read November 2, 2026. Above 4 payments, ask a lawyer before you launch.

  4. Memberships are recurring

ROSCA requires you to disclose all material terms before taking billing details, get express informed consent, and provide a simple way to stop the charges4Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403.

  5. Say it again in the receipt

Send the schedule or the renewal date by email right after payment.

Example

"Pay in full: $1,497. Or 3 payments of $499, charged today, March 2 and April 2. No interest. Cancel within 14 days for a full refund." with its own checkbox, above the pay button.

EU buyers: the withdrawal waiver

EU consumers normally have 14 days to withdraw from a distance purchase. For a course they can open right away, that right can end at checkout, but only with their explicit agreement.

Put an unticked box at checkout for EU buyers, then confirm the consent in the receipt email. The 2019 amendments to the directive changed this article; check the current text with counsel before you rely on it.

Testimonials and guarantees without earnings claims

Testimonials at checkout help, until they promise money. That is what the FTC, Stripe and the card networks look for in this vertical.

Keep testimonials about the course itself: what the student learned, how the program was run, how support answered. State the guarantee with its real conditions.

Collect the evidence you'll need in a dispute

For a digital product, proof of delivery is proof of access. The checkout is where you start collecting it.

  1. Capture the buyer's email, IP address and device with the order.
  2. Log access: first login, lessons opened, downloads, with dates.
  3. Keep the consent records: plan agreement, renewal terms, EU waiver checkbox.

For a digital product, proof of delivery is proof of access.

For a fraud dispute on digital goods, Visa accepts a description of the product, the date it was provided, and 2 or more items: IP address, device ID, the buyer's name and email linked to their profile, or evidence the buyer accessed the site on or after the purchase date3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19 and 5-20 (installments), 11-7 (Compelling Evidence), 11-93 (13.1), 11-118 and 11-122 (13.5).

For services, a "not received" dispute can come up to 120 days after the date the buyer expected the service, capped at 540 days3Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19 and 5-20 (installments), 11-7 (Compelling Evidence), 11-93 (13.1), 11-118 and 11-122 (13.5), so keep logs for the whole program.

A separate checkout makes sense when you need order bumps, upsells, plans and memberships in one flow, or a backup processor. The course itself can stay on the platform, with access granted after payment. More in Shopify or a sales funnel for your info product business.

Frequently asked questions

What should be on an online course checkout page?

The product name, the total price with tax, the payment options with their terms, a name, email and card field, Apple Pay or Google Pay, one optional bump, the refund policy in one line, and a single pay button. Leave out menus and links that take the buyer away.

Should students create an account before they pay?

No. Baymard found 18% of US shoppers who abandoned a checkout left because an account was required. Take the payment first, then create the login automatically and email the access link. The buyer gets the course; you keep the sale.

Should I offer a payment plan on my course checkout?

Yes for high-ticket programs, as a clearly separate option. Show the total, the number of payments, the dates and the refund policy, and get a separate agreement, as Visa requires. Keep it interest-free and, unless your lawyer says otherwise, at 4 payments or fewer.

Can I show student results on the checkout page?

You can show what students learned and how they rate the course. Avoid income or business results: the FTC treats them as earnings claims and settled with Publishing.com over them (announced April 2026, final order July 2, 2026). A result testimonial also needs the generally expected result, not just "results not typical".

One-step or two-step checkout for a course?

A two-step checkout takes the email first, so you can follow up with buyers who stop. A one-page checkout has fewer steps. For low-priced courses, one page is usually enough; for high-ticket programs, test both and compare completed orders, not email captures.
