Why Your Telehealth Company Gets Traffic but No Sales

Why visitors to your telehealth site don't become paying patients: find the funnel step that leaks, from ad to quiz to checkout to approval.

Article summary

TL;DR

Most telehealth funnels leak at one of seven points: an ad that promises something the page cannot say, a quiz that is too long, a price shown too late, weak trust, declined cards, patients in states you do not serve, or tracking that hides real sales. Measure each step separately, find the biggest drop, and fix that one first.

  • 40% of US shoppers who abandoned a checkout cited extra costs, 19% did not trust the site with their card, and 18% left because they had to create an account (Baymard, September 2025).
  • 10% abandoned because their card was declined.
  • Google restricts prescription drug terms "in ads, landing pages, and keywords", which shapes what your page can promise (read November 2, 2026).
  • Meta limits telehealth prescription ads to people 18 or older in the US, Canada and New Zealand.

Find the step where you lose patients

"No sales" is never one problem. Split the funnel and read each step on its own.

From the table above.

Intake abandonment is simply the share of patients who start the quiz and do not finish it6Solum, Intake abandonment rate, read November 2, 2026. Track it by device, since mobile and desktop often behave differently. Definitions of each step: telehealth company benchmarks.

Cause 1: the ad promises what the page cannot say

Ad rules shape your copy. Google restricts the use of prescription drug terms in ads, landing pages and keywords2Google Ads policy, prescription drug services, read November 2, 2026. If the ad hints at a treatment and the page is vague, visitors leave.

Setup: Meta and TikTok ads for telehealth companies.

Cause 2: the quiz is too long or behind a wall

The intake quiz is your real product page. Every extra screen costs completions.

  1. Ask only what the clinician needs

To decide, in the order they need it.

  2. Do not force an account

  3. Show progress

And let patients resume where they stopped.

  4. Test on a phone

    On a slow connection.

Cause 3: the price appears too late

Patients who reach the end of a 20-question quiz and see an unexpected price leave. Extra costs are the first reason for checkout abandonment, at 40%1Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025.

Four of the reasons this page covers.

Baymard Institute, reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025.
  • Show the price, or a starting price, before the quiz.
  • Say what is included: consultation, medication if prescribed, shipping, follow-up.
  • Explain when they pay: only if a clinician approves, if that is how your flow works.

How to structure the offer: the telehealth sales funnel.

Cause 4: patients do not trust the site

Health is personal. 19% of shoppers abandoned because they did not trust the site with their card1Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025, and the bar is higher when they share health details.

Trust signalWhere to show it

Certification you actually hold (for example LegitScript)Footer and checkout

Clear cancellation termsCheckout, next to the price

Watch out

Trust claims must be true. In 2024 the FTC's case against Cerebral covered both data shared through tracking tools and a cancellation process the agency called deceptive7FTC, proposed order against Cerebral, April 15, 2024. A privacy promise you do not keep is worse than none.

Cause 5: cards are declined

Telemedicine is a restricted business at Stripe, approved case by case4Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026. Restricted verticals often see more declines, and 10% of shoppers who abandoned did so because their card was declined1Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025.

  • Measure decline rate by card type and issuer country.
  • Offer Apple Pay and Google Pay where your processor supports them.
  • Have a backup processor so one account review does not stop sales: payment routing and backup processors.

Why declines happen and how to reduce them: reducing payment declines for telehealth companies.

Cause 6: patients you cannot serve

Clinicians generally need to be licensed where the patient is. The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact covers 44 states, the District of Columbia and Guam, but it is a faster path to state licenses, not a national license5Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Commission, A faster pathway to physician licensure, read November 3, 2026.

  • Ask the state first, before the quiz, and stop politely if you do not serve it.
  • Exclude unserved states in ad targeting so you do not pay for traffic you will refuse.
  • Read approval rate by channel: a channel with many declined cases is more expensive than it looks.

The rules by state: is telehealth legal across state lines?

Cause 7: the sales are there, but tracking misses them

Sometimes sales exist and the ad platform does not see them. Browser pixels miss events, and a card hold that is captured days later may never be reported.

  • Send the purchase event when the payment is captured, from your server.
  • Send no health data in event names or parameters.
  • Compare ad-reported purchases to captured payments every week.

A 30-minute diagnostic

Run this once a month, in this order.

  1. Pull last month's numbers for each step in the first table.
  2. Find the largest relative drop between two steps.
  3. Split that step by device, channel and state.
  4. Watch five session recordings of patients who dropped at that step.
  5. Pick one fix, test it for two weeks, and compare.

One fix at a time, tested for two weeks.

Fig. 4Where the example brand leaks

  1. Quiz starters who finish the quiz40%
  2. Finishers who reach the card hold80%

The biggest drop is the quiz.

Illustrative example, from the example below.

Example

A brand sees 40% of quiz starters finish the quiz, but 80% of finishers reach the card hold. The leak is the quiz, not the price. Cutting it to the questions the clinician needs comes before any checkout test.

How Tagada helps

Checkout tests, tracking and routing in one place

Tagada keeps the checkout, its tests and its tracking in one place, and TagadaPay scores each payment: "Every transaction is scored against your live MID network in real time."9TagadaPay, homepage, read November 2, 2026

  • Checkout A/B tests, Apple Pay and Google Pay in the Tagada checkout.
  • Server-side tracking to Meta (Conversions API).
  • Routing across TagadaPay and processors such as Stripe, NMI and Airwallex, with a cascade to another processor when one is down or times out.
  • Fraud filters: "Native 3DS2, device intelligence, and rules engine: approve real customers, block the rest".

Building the whole telehealth brand? Tagada Rx puts the "Branching medical screening", the card hold and a clinician "Licensed in the patient's state" in one data model, and captures the card only once a doctor approves8Tagada Rx, tagada.io/rx, read November 2, 2026. US patients only, by selection.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my telehealth website getting traffic but no patients?

Usually one funnel step leaks much more than the others: the quiz, the price reveal, trust, card declines or patients in states you do not serve. Measure each step from landing page to captured payment, split by device and channel, and fix the biggest drop first. Also check that your tracking sees captured payments.

How long should a telehealth intake quiz be?

As short as the clinician's decision allows. Ask only what is needed to approve or decline, in a logical order, with a progress bar. Avoid forcing an account first: 18% of shoppers abandon a checkout that requires one. Test on a phone, where most paid social traffic lands.

Should I show the price before the quiz?

Yes, at least a starting price and what it includes. Unexpected extra costs are the top reason shoppers abandon a checkout, cited by 40%. Patients who finish a long quiz and then discover the price feel misled. Say when the card is charged, for example only after a clinician approves.

Can I target patients in every state?

Only states where your clinicians are licensed, since the patient's location generally decides which license applies. Ask the state at the start of the quiz and exclude unserved states in your ads. See is telehealth legal across state lines?

Why do my ads report fewer sales than my bank account?

Browser pixels miss events, and in telehealth the payment is often captured after clinician approval, sometimes days after the visit. Send the purchase event from your server at capture, without any health data, and reconcile ad-reported purchases with captured payments weekly.
