Does Stripe Allow Telehealth Services?
Stripe lists telemedicine as restricted, not prohibited. The exact policy lines, what it asks for, LegitScript, medication sales and health data.
Article summary
Restricted, not prohibitedTL;DR
Yes, after a review. Stripe lists "Telemedicine and telehealth services" as a restricted business: you apply, Stripe reviews your licenses and processes case by case, and any approval can be revoked later. Telemedicine is prohibited only for Stripe accounts in Mexico. Stripe doesn't require LegitScript for telemedicine, but selling the medication yourself is a separate, stricter review.
- "Telemedicine and telehealth services" sit on Stripe's restricted list, under "Pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and telemedicine".
- Approval "is specific to each service offer, and it may be modified or revoked by Stripe at any time".
- "Telemedicine businesses don't need certification from LegitScript".
- On medication, Stripe's main FAQ says "Maybe"; its Express FAQ says "In general, no" (both read November 2, 2026).
- Stripe's agreement says users "must not provide Protected Health Information to Stripe" (agreement modified September 28, 2026).

What Stripe's policy says
Telehealth sits in a restricted box with four neighbors. Which line applies depends on what you actually charge for.
Fig. 1Six Stripe policy lines a telehealth brand can touch
| Policy line (exact wording) | List | What it covers for a telehealth brand |
|---|---|---|
| "Telemedicine and telehealth services" | Restricted | The consultation, membership or treatment plan |
| "Card-not-present prescription-only products and pharmaceuticals" | Restricted | The medication, if you charge for it |
| "Online pharmacies, including SaaS platforms" | Restricted | A pharmacy, or software that runs one |
| "Prescription delivery services" | Restricted | Shipping prescriptions to patients |
| "Telemedicine" | ProhibitedIn Mexico | Any Mexico-based Stripe account |
| "Medical benefit packages not offered by a government or health insurance company" | ProhibitedIn the US | Plans sold as health coverage |
The consultation and the medication sit on two different lines.
Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 20261Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026.
Restricted means you can't just sign up and start. Businesses in these categories "require additional due diligence by Stripe in order to confirm our ability to support them"1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026.
Watch out
Sell a membership as access to a service, with its price and what it includes. Presented as coverage, it can drift toward the US "medical benefit packages" line1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026.
Is your business "telemedicine" for Stripe?
Stripe's FAQ gives the test: telemedicine "includes synchronous and asynchronous patient communication that involves diagnosis or treatment conducted over phone, text, email, or video consultations"2Stripe Support, Prohibited and restricted businesses list FAQs, read November 2, 2026. Education and wellness resources "aren't categorized as telemedicine"2Stripe Support, Prohibited and restricted businesses list FAQs, read November 2, 2026.
| What you sell | Stripe category |
|---|---|
| Video, phone or chat consultation with diagnosis or treatment | Telemedicine (restricted) |
| Asynchronous intake reviewed by a clinician who may prescribe | Telemedicine (restricted) |
| Membership that includes clinician access | Telemedicine (restricted) |
| Health education content, courses, coaching without diagnosis | Not telemedicine |
| The prescription medication itself | Prescription-only products (restricted, stricter review) |
What Stripe asks before approving
Stripe "reviews each business on a case-by-case basis" and says it can't know whether you'll be approved "without additional context"2Stripe Support, Prohibited and restricted businesses list FAQs, read November 2, 2026. Expect to provide:
License numbers
License numbers of your prescribing clinicians2Stripe Support, Prohibited and restricted businesses list FAQs, read November 2, 2026.
Your processes
"Information on your processes": intake, review, when a prescription is issued2Stripe Support, Prohibited and restricted businesses list FAQs, read November 2, 2026.
Licenses or business model
Proof of relevant licenses or more details about your business model at account creation1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026.
A site that shows it
A site that shows what you sell, the price, and who provides care.
Stripe also states the reason it can't approve everyone: "card network rules, requirements of financial partners, and our own compliance and legal obligations"1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026. A full file checklist: how to get a telehealth merchant account approved.
Do you need LegitScript for Stripe?
No. Stripe's FAQ is explicit: "Telemedicine businesses don't need certification from LegitScript. However, certain licensing and regulatory items must be provided to Stripe for verification as part of the onboarding process"2Stripe Support, Prohibited and restricted businesses list FAQs, read November 2, 2026.
Many guides say the opposite because pharmacies are a different case. Visa exempts pharmacies certified by LegitScript or accredited by NABP from its registration requirement; telemedicine isn't in Visa's program at all8Visa, Visa Integrity Risk Program, guide for acquirers, April 6, 2023. Where LegitScript does matter for telehealth is ads: can you advertise telehealth services?
If you also sell the medication
This is where Stripe's two FAQ versions part ways.
| Stripe page | Answer to "Can my business process payments for pharmaceuticals through Stripe?" |
|---|---|
| Main FAQ | "Maybe, this is a highly regulated industry, and Stripe must abide by the card network policies in place regarding pharmaceutical merchants." Pharmacies approved only in "the US, Canada, the EU, Australia, the UK, and Japan"2Stripe Support, Prohibited and restricted businesses list FAQs, read November 2, 2026 |
| Express FAQ | "In general, no. Payments for prescription medicines will need to occur outside Stripe."3Stripe Support, Express accounts version of the same FAQ, read November 2, 2026 |
Both read November 2, 2026. The Express version applies to Express connected accounts on platforms.
Fig. 2Who charges for the medication, and what Stripe says
- You, on StripeMain FAQ: Maybe. Express FAQ: In general, no
- A licensed pharmacyCharges for the drug; you keep the consultation
- A platformCarries that relationship
Stripe approves the consultation more easily than the drug.
The safe reading: Stripe approves the consultation more easily than the medication. Many brands let a licensed pharmacy charge for the drug, or use a platform that carries that relationship. The options: charging the consultation and the medication separately, and the pharmacy side in does Stripe allow prescription drugs?
Health data: what never goes to Stripe
Stripe's agreement is direct: "User must not provide Protected Health Information to Stripe as part of Third Party Data. User is liable for any disclosure of Protected Health Information to Stripe"4Stripe Services Agreement, last modified September 28, 2026.
In practice:
Product names
No condition or treatment in product names, descriptions or invoice lines.
Metadata and descriptor
No clinical data in metadata, customer notes or the statement descriptor.
Intake answers
Intake answers stay in your clinical system, not in the payment record.

After approval: revocation, payouts and saved cards
Approval is not permanent. Stripe can modify or revoke it "at any time"1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026, and can close an account under its agreement4Stripe Services Agreement, last modified September 28, 2026.
| If Stripe acts | What its pages say |
|---|---|
| Payouts | For unacceptable risk, Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts" for 120 days from its first email, then reviews the balance5Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026 |
| Reserve | A hold for "a predetermined period of time"; "in some rare cases, a reserve may be required indefinitely"6Stripe Support, Reserves: frequently asked questions, read October 26, 2026 |
| Saved cards | Exported only to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor; subscriptions and payment history are not exported7Stripe Docs, Request a payment data export, read October 26, 2026 |
120 days
Typical payout pause for unacceptable risk, from Stripe's first email
Level 1
PCI DSS level the receiving processor needs for a card export
7 days
Visa's minimum reminder before a trial ends
Stripe also prohibits "negative option marketing [...] and reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing"1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026. A telehealth plan that renews without clear terms risks the account even after approval.
Visa adds a reminder at least 7 days before a trial ends and online cancellation9Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, tables 5-20 and 5-21. Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments. If it happens: why Stripe closed your telehealth company account.
Set up before you need it
| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| Describe each service offer to Stripe | Approval is "specific to each service offer"1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026; a new offer can need a new review |
| Decide who charges for the medication | It changes the Stripe line, the code and the review |
| A second route for payments | A revoked approval doesn't stop renewals: payment routing for telehealth companies |
| Charge after clinician approval | Fewer refunds and disputes on refused prescriptions |
If you'd rather not assemble the clinical, pharmacy and payment pieces yourself, a telehealth stack with storefront, doctors, pharmacy and payments takes the regulated relationship out of your Stripe account.
How Tagada helps
A second processor and a portable vault next to Stripe
TagadaPay orchestrates Stripe rather than replacing it: "Already on Stripe, NMI or Airwallex? We orchestrate those too."11TagadaPay, homepage, read November 2, 2026 It applies "Enhanced review for regulated verticals."
- Routing across TagadaPay and processors such as Stripe, NMI and Airwallex, with one logic and a cascade to another processor when one is down or times out
- Cards kept in the Tagada vault, so running subscriptions continue after a processor change: "Switch processors without re-onboarding customers"
- Fraud and security: "Native 3DS2, device intelligence, and rules engine"
Building a telehealth brand from scratch? With Tagada Rx, "The card is only captured once a doctor approves", US-licensed clinicians in the patient's state handle e-prescribing, and refills rebill on ship day10Tagada Rx, read November 2, 2026. US patients only, by selection.
