Why Your Fitness Brand Gets Traffic but No Sales
Your fitness store gets visitors but no orders? Find where they leave, with funnel benchmarks, and fix shipping, product pages, checkout and payments.
Article summary
TL;DR
Traffic without sales is a leak at one step of the funnel, not a traffic problem. Check first that orders are tracked, then compare your add-to-cart and cart-to-purchase rates with your category. For fitness brands, the usual leaks are shipping cost on heavy items, product pages that do not show the product in use, unclear returns and failed payments.
- Polar's "Sports & Outdoor" medians: 7.62% add-to-cart, 28.51% cart-to-purchase, 2.25% conversion (August 2026).
- 40% of shoppers who abandon checkout cite "Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees)"; 20% say delivery was too slow (Baymard, September 2025).
- 13% leave because the returns policy "wasn't satisfactory", and 10% because the card was declined.
- Home fitness equipment converts at 1.5 to 2.0% in Grips Intelligence data (September 2026), below the ecommerce averages most guides quote.
On this page
This guide is part of our playbook on the best ecommerce platform for fitness brands. For checkout in general, any industry, see our checkout guide.
First, check that the numbers are real
Before you redesign anything, make sure sales are not happening unseen, and that the store works.
Place a real order
On mobile, with a real card, from an ad link. Note every moment you hesitate.
Open the store from another device and network
In one fitness store thread, the owner reported "40-60 viewers everyday" and no sales; the first reply said "a blank page came up instead"3Shopify Community, "Why isn't my fitness website converting daily viewers into sales?", June 4, 2023.
Compare orders in your store with purchases in your ad platforms
If the store shows orders the ads do not, the problem is tracking, not sales. See server-side tracking for fitness brands.
Check bot traffic
A spike of sessions from one country or source with zero time on page is not demand.
Find where visitors leave
The step where your rate falls furthest below the benchmark is where you start. Polar publishes medians by category1Polar Analytics, Ecommerce benchmarks, medians of 4,000+ Shopify brands, last updated August 25, 2026.
| Step | Sports & Outdoor median | Health & Wellness median | If you are far below | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visit to add-to-cart | 7.62% | 12.91% | Wrong traffic, weak product page, price shock | Ads, product pages |
| Cart to purchase | 28.51% | 35.16% | Shipping cost, delivery date, returns, payment | Cart, checkout |
| Overall conversion | 2.25% | 2.74% | Combination of the above | Whole funnel |

Sports & OutdoorHealth & Wellness
- Visit to add-to-cart
- Cart to purchase
- Overall conversion
Put your own rate next to each step: start where the gap is widest.
Use at least a few hundred sessions before you judge. With 50 visits a day, one week of data is still noise. Your category's full benchmarks are in fitness brand benchmarks.
Problem 1: the wrong traffic, or a broken promise
If visitors leave before adding anything, the ad and the page do not match.
- The ad promises a result, the page sells a product. The buyer came for a transformation and finds a spec sheet. Keep both on the product and its use.
- Price shock. An ad without a price sends low-budget clicks to a $600 rack. Show the price range in the ad or the first screen.
- Mixed catalog. Activewear, supplements and racks on one homepage leave a new visitor unsure who the brand is for.
- Paused or rejected catalog items. A merchant reported a pre-workout product "rejected for medical and healthcare violations" in the Facebook and Instagram catalog (Shopify Community, January 2024)7Shopify Community, merchant thread on a pre-workout product rejected in the Facebook and Instagram catalog, January 3, 2024. Ads then send traffic to products that are not in the catalog.

- A product missing from the catalogA paused or rejected catalog item.Check the item is live before ads send traffic to it.
Ad setup and the rules for fitness claims are in Meta and TikTok ads for fitness brands.
Problem 2: product pages that do not answer the questions
Fitness buyers cannot try the product. The page has to do it for them.
For equipment, show:
- The product in use, with a person for scale.
- Dimensions, weight, footprint and ceiling height needed.
- Weight capacity, materials and what is in the box.
- Delivery method (curbside, room of choice), date and assembly.
For sports nutrition, show:
- Flavor, servings per container and price per serving.
- The full label and the ingredient list.
- Reviews from real buyers, without claims of results.
Watch out
Testimonials are not a shortcut. The FTC says testimonials that report results "more dramatic than users can generally expect are likely to be deceptive", and "Results not typical" does not fix it8FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance, December 2022.
The page structure that works is detailed in the fitness brand sales funnel: offer and page structure.
Problem 3: checkout costs, delivery and returns
If carts fill up but orders do not come, look at what the buyer learns in the cart. Baymard's reasons for checkout abandonment map directly to heavy fitness products2Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for checkout abandonment, updated September 22, 2025.
| Baymard reason | Share | Why it hits fitness harder | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees) | 40% | Freight on heavy items appears only at checkout | Show delivery cost on the product page |
| Delivery was too slow | 20% | Bulky items ship in weeks, not days | Show a delivery date range before the cart |
| Didn't trust the site with card details | 19% | High ticket from an unknown brand | Reviews, contact details, known payment methods |
| Returns policy wasn't satisfactory | 13% | Returning a 100 lb item is a real cost | Clear return terms and steps |
| Couldn't see total cost up front | 12% | Shipping by zone, assembly extra | Total before the payment step |
| Credit card was declined | 10% | One failed card loses a large order | Wallets, another card |
| Not enough payment methods | 9% | Buyers want wallets or financing on big orders | Apple Pay, Google Pay, financing if offered |
Fig. 2Why US shoppers abandon a checkout
Highlighted: the reasons heavy equipment makes worse.
Shipping cost by zone matters too. In a fitness store thread with "18k visits" and "only 1 sale", a reply found shipping to Canada "surprisingly expensive"4Shopify Community, "18k visits, 1 sale", August 12, 2024.
Clear return instructions also protect you in disputes. Under Visa's rules, a buyer's attempt to return counts if the merchant "did not provide clear instructions on how to return"6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute condition 13.3. Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.
Problem 4: payments that fail
Some "abandoned" checkouts are buyers who tried to pay and failed. Baymard counts 10% of abandoning shoppers who left because their card was declined2Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for checkout abandonment, updated September 22, 2025.
- Look at failed payment attempts, not only abandoned carts. A spike after a processor change is a signal.
- Offer wallets. Apple Pay and Google Pay reduce typing on mobile.
- Plan a backup processor. On high-ticket equipment, a second processor that takes over when the first is down or times out can save the order. See payment routing for fitness brands.
Why declines happen and how processors treat fitness products is on the payment side: reducing payment declines for fitness brands.
A 7-day diagnostic plan
Do this before you buy more traffic.
- Day 1: place test orders on mobile and desktop, from an ad link.
- Day 2: compare store orders with ad platform purchases.
- Day 3: pull add-to-cart and cart-to-purchase rates by product line and traffic source.
- Day 4: compare each rate with your Polar category and mark the furthest gap.
- Day 5: fix the cheapest item at that step: delivery cost shown early, return terms, a missing photo.
- Day 6: check failed payment attempts and wallet availability.
- Day 7: launch one A/B test on the step you fixed. See A/B testing for fitness brands.
Do this before you buy more traffic.
How Tagada helps
Fix the fitness checkout leaks in one place
Tagada brings the checkout steps that leak most into one place.
- Checkout: one-click upsells, order bumps and A/B tests, with Apple Pay and Google Pay.
- Abandoned checkouts: an "abandoned_checkout" email template among the transactional emails (docs).
- Tracking: server-side events to Meta, Google and TikTok, without pixels on the checkout page.
- Payments: routing across TagadaPay and processors such as Stripe, NMI and Airwallex, with one logic, and cascade to another processor when one is down or times out. TagadaPay reports a "+18% approval uplift."
It runs standalone, on Shopify, on WooCommerce or headless. Plans are on the pricing page. To take payments with TagadaPay, apply today: "Most merchants are live under 24 hours," according to TagadaPay.
