Express Checkout: Apple Pay and Google Pay, From Setup to Placement

How express checkout works: which wallet buttons to offer, why a button doesn't show, where to place it, and what changes for subscriptions and upsells.

Article summary

TL;DR

Express checkout lets a shopper pay with a saved wallet, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, instead of typing a card and an address. The button shows only when the device, browser and wallet allow it and your domain is registered. Put it first in checkout and in the cart, and check it works for subscriptions and upsells.

  • In a Shopify and BCG study of 220,000 sites, offering at least one accelerated payment method raised lower-funnel conversion by upward of 50% (North America, June 2023).
  • Baymard's average documented cart abandonment rate is 70.22%; 17% of US shoppers who abandoned cited a long or complicated checkout (updated September 2025).
  • Since iOS 18, shoppers can use Apple Pay in any non-Safari browser by scanning a code with their iPhone (Apple, June 2024).
  • Apple's guidelines ask you to make Apple Pay the primary payment option when the shopper has a card in Wallet.
  • A one-time express payment can leave nothing to charge later: no renewal, no post-purchase upsell on the same card.

What express checkout replaces

It removes the two slowest parts of a mobile checkout: the card form and the address form. The shopper confirms in a sheet with Face ID, a fingerprint or the device code.

The numbers behind it are vendor studies, so read them as a direction, not a promise. Shopify's study with BCG compared stores with at least one accelerated method to stores with none1Shopify, What a billion data points reveal about conversion and the future of commerce, study with Boston Consulting Group, June 29, 2023. Which buttons to offer

Offer the device wallets your customers carry, and one account wallet if your market expects it. Two or three buttons cover most stores; more push the card form down.

Why the Apple Pay or Google Pay button doesn't show

Almost always for one of five reasons, and most of them are invisible to the shopper. Check them in this order.

  1. No Apple Pay on an iPhone that has itThe checkout domain isn't registeredRegister every domain and subdomain that shows the button
  2. No Google Pay for some shoppersNo card saved in Google Pay, or unsupported browserNormal: keep the card form below
  3. Buttons missing inside Instagram or TikTokIn-app browser: Link and PayPal aren't supported in webviewsTest the in-app browsers your ads open
  4. Buttons missing in an embedded checkoutThe iframe origin doesn't match the pageServe the checkout from the same origin
  5. Buttons missing in one currencyThe wallet doesn't support that currencyCheck the currencies of each method

Stripe documents the webview, iframe and currency limits5Stripe Docs, Express Checkout Element, read November 3, 2026. Tagada's docs add that an unregistered domain "fails at merchant validation, before the sheet ever opens, and the failure is silent to the shopper"9Tagada Docs, Apple Pay and Google Pay, read November 3, 2026. Where to put the buttons

Put them at the top of the checkout, before the forms. Then test them in the cart and on the product page, where they save the most steps.

  1. Checkout: first, and visible. "Consider presenting the Apple Pay button as the first payment option, displaying it larger than other options"4Apple Human Interface Guidelines, Apple Pay, read November 3, 2026.

  4. Collect size, color and gift notes first. The sheet has no field for optional data4Apple Human Interface Guidelines, Apple Pay, read November 3, 2026.

Watch out

Don't hide or grey out the Apple Pay button while a size isn't chosen. Apple's guidance is to let the shopper tap it and then point out what's missing4Apple Human Interface Guidelines, Apple Pay, read November 3, 2026.

On a one-page checkout, the buttons sit above the email field. See one-page checkout and checkout as guest for the rest of the layout.

What the wallet sheet should show

The sheet is your checkout for the shoppers who use it. Give it the same information as your page, and nothing extra.

  2. Line items

  3. Your business name

  4. Only what you need

Express checkout with subscriptions and one-click upsells

This is where most express setups break. A wallet payment can be charged again later only if the first payment saved a reusable credential.

An Apple Pay or Google Pay paymentWhat you can charge after the sheet closes
  1. Native wallet pathNetwork token stored like a card: renewals and upsells work
  2. Processor's express element, subscription in the cartPayment method kept for renewals
  3. Processor's express element, one-time cartNothing kept: no upsell on the same card
  4. Link or Klarna through the express elementNothing kept on any cart

The branches come from Tagada's documentation of Stripe's Express Checkout and TagadaPay9Tagada Docs, Apple Pay and Google Pay, read November 3, 2026. Two technical rules apply to every later charge. The wallet's cryptogram is single-use, so it only covers the first, shopper-present payment. Later charges are merchant-initiated and reuse the stored credential instead9Tagada Docs, Apple Pay and Google Pay, read November 3, 2026.

Apple Pay adds a third point. By default it issues a device token tied to one phone; if the customer replaces it, renewals can fail. Requesting a merchant token for recurring payments keeps it tied to the customer and card instead8Stripe Docs, Apple Pay merchant tokens, read November 3, 2026. More on renewals: subscription billing. On the offer after payment: one-click upsells.

3D Secure and fraud with wallets

Apple Pay and Google Pay on a phone authenticate the shopper on the device. Cards that Google Pay returns as a plain card number don't, so treat them like any card.

Wallet resultWhat it carriesWhat to do
Apple PayA network token and a cryptogram for the first paymentCharge through a processor that supports Apple Pay
Google Pay with a device token (Android)A token with a cryptogramSame as Apple Pay
Google Pay with a card on file (PAN_ONLY)The card number, no device authenticationUse "the same risk criteria to trigger 3D Secure" as for regular cards6Google Pay API for web, Integration checklist, read November 3, 2026

Processor support matters. Tagada's docs warn that a processor without wallet support charges a wallet card "as a plain card", with "no cryptogram and no wallet indicator", which "usually means worse authorisation rates and no liability shift"9Tagada Docs, Apple Pay and Google Pay, read November 3, 2026. Measure what the buttons change

Compare before and after, by device. A wallet that takes share from cards without lifting conversion only moved payments around.

MetricHow to read it
Checkout conversion, mobile and desktopThe main result; mobile should move most
Wallet share of ordersHow many buyers use it, by wallet
Button shown vs button usedShown rarely: a setup problem; used rarely: a placement problem
Average order value by methodProduct-page purchases are often single items
Disputes and refunds by methodFraud or "I didn't recognize this" on wallet orders

Test one change at a time: add the buttons, then move them. Conversion benchmarks and tests: ecommerce checkout optimization.

Frequently asked questions

What is express checkout?

A way to pay with a saved wallet, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or Shop Pay, instead of typing card and address details. The shopper taps a button, confirms in a sheet with Face ID, a fingerprint or a login, and the wallet sends the payment and shipping details to the store.

Why is Apple Pay not showing at checkout?

The most common causes are an unregistered checkout domain, a device or browser without Apple Pay, no card in the shopper's Wallet, or an embedded checkout whose origin doesn't match the page. Since iOS 18, shoppers on other browsers see a code to scan with their iPhone.

Does express checkout increase conversion?

Usually, on mobile. Shopify's study with BCG found that offering at least one accelerated method raised lower-funnel conversion by upward of 50% across 220,000 North American sites. That's a vendor study: measure your own checkout conversion by device before and after.

Where should express checkout buttons go?

At the top of the checkout, before the forms, then in the cart. Apple also suggests a button on product pages for single-item purchases, as long as it excludes what's already in the cart.

Can I use Apple Pay for subscriptions?

Yes, if the first payment saves a reusable credential. A network token from the native wallet path can pay renewals, and an Apple Pay merchant token keeps working when the customer changes phone. A one-time express payment that saves nothing can't be charged again.
