PayPal for High-Ticket Sales: Limits and Holds

PayPal's per-transaction limits, the items that need pre-approval, why a large payment gets held or reviewed, authorization holds and Pay Monthly limits.

Article summary

TL;DR

PayPal publishes no cap on what a seller can receive per sale. The cap that bites is the buyer's: a verified account can send up to $60,000 in one payment, but PayPal "may limit that amount to $10,000.00 USD." Jewels and precious metals need pre-approval. A large sale can be reviewed, held up to 21 days or limited.

  • A verified buyer can send up to $60,000 in a single transaction, which PayPal may limit to $10,000; an unverified buyer, $4,000 one-time.
  • PayPal's Acceptable Use Policy requires pre-approval for "Operating as a dealer in jewels, precious metals and stones".
  • The User Agreement (September 14, 2026) names "selling an entirely new or high-cost product type" as a reason to limit an account.
  • Risk-based holds generally last up to 21 days and can lift earlier once you upload tracking.
  • A PayPal authorization is valid for 29 days, with a 3-day honor period to capture.

Is there a maximum transaction amount on PayPal?

Not on the seller's side, in the pages PayPal publishes. The limits you meet are the buyer's sending limit and the payment method they choose1PayPal Help Center, What's the maximum amount I can send with my PayPal account? (HELP286), read November 3, 20268PayPal Developer, Pay Later (United States), updated October 20, 2026.

Items that need PayPal's approval first

Seller Protection also stops short of some large purchases. It excludes real estate, vehicles (except bicycles and similar light vehicles), buying a business, "Industrial machinery used in manufacturing", payments for gold, and gift cards5PayPal's Seller Protection Program, last updated January 26, 2026, read November 3, 2026. Why a large payment gets held

Because it doesn't look like your account. The User Agreement gives four mechanisms, each with its own exit3PayPal User Agreement, last updated September 14, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

Payment review. "If PayPal determines, in its sole discretion, that a transaction is high-risk, we place a hold on the payment and provide notice to you to delay shipping of the item"3PayPal User Agreement, last updated September 14, 2026, read November 3, 2026. If the payment completes review, it stays eligible for Seller Protection when it meets the requirements3PayPal User Agreement, last updated September 14, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

Holds. PayPal cites "Payments for higher-risk categories like electronics or tickets" and "New sellers or sellers who have limited selling activity" among common cases3PayPal User Agreement, last updated September 14, 2026, read November 3, 2026. Limitations. PayPal's own guide gives the example: "If you start to sell an entirely new type of product, specifically higher-end items like jewelry, your account may be limited while PayPal investigates the change"2PayPal, PayPal Business transfer limits: maximum and minimum, July 16, 2024, read November 3, 2026.

Before the big sale

Most of what triggers a review is visible before you take the payment.

  1. Use a business account with complete details: legal name, website, product description, customer service contact and a refunds policy, which the User Agreement requires3PayPal User Agreement, last updated September 14, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

Disputes on large orders

One lost claim on a $10,000 sale costs more than a year of small ones. A buyer can open an "Item Not Received" dispute within 180 days of payment, and a "Significantly Not as Described" dispute within 30 days of delivery or 180 days of payment, whichever is sooner6PayPal's Purchase Protection Program, last updated January 26, 2026, read November 3, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum amount you can receive on PayPal?

PayPal publishes no per-sale cap for sellers in the pages we read. The buyer's limit applies: a verified account can send up to $60,000 in one transaction, which PayPal may limit to $10,000, and an unverified account $4,000 one-time. Pay Monthly stops at $10,000.

Why is PayPal holding my large payment?

A large or unusual payment can go to payment review, where PayPal asks you to delay shipping, or to a risk-based hold of generally up to 21 days. PayPal cites new sellers, higher-risk categories and sudden changes. Uploading tracking can release a hold earlier.

Can I sell jewelry on PayPal?

Yes, but a dealer in jewels, precious metals and stones needs PayPal's pre-approval first. Without it, the activity is prohibited. Starting to sell higher-end items like jewelry can also lead PayPal to limit the account while it reviews the change.

How long can PayPal hold an authorization?

An authorization is valid for 29 days. You should capture within the 3-day honor period; after that, you can reauthorize, which restarts a 3-day honor period inside the 29 days. Capture is subject to risk and money availability.

Does Seller Protection cover expensive items?

Value isn't an exclusion, but some categories are: real estate, vehicles, businesses, industrial machinery, gold and gift cards. Covered items need tracking with "delivered" status at the address on the Transaction Details page. "Significantly Not as Described" claims are never covered.
