Stripe for High-Ticket Sales: Limits and Holds

Stripe's maximum charge, authorization holds, extended holds and Affirm limits, and why one large payment can trigger a reserve or a payout pause.

Article summary

TL;DR

Stripe has no high-ticket cap for card payments beyond a technical one: 12 digits in the smallest currency unit. The limits that matter are elsewhere. An authorization holds for 7 days, or up to 30 with an extended hold on IC+ pricing. A large or unusual sale can bring a reserve or a payout delay, so warn Stripe first.

  • Card charges accept up to 12 digits in minor units, 9 for American Express; most other payment methods stop at 999,999.99.
  • An online card authorization is typically valid 7 days; an extended hold can reach 30 days, on IC+ pricing.
  • On Visa, outside hotels, car rental and cruise lines, an extended hold costs an extra 0.08% per transaction.
  • Stripe lists "longer-than-average delivery windows" and "an unexplainable sharp increase in processing volume" among the reasons for a reserve.
  • Affirm through Stripe covers US orders from $35 to $30,000, with Stripe paying you the full amount upfront.

Is there a maximum transaction amount on Stripe?

Not in the way most merchants fear. Stripe limits the number of digits in an amount, and card networks can set their own lower limits1Stripe Docs, Supported currencies: minimum and maximum charge amounts, read November 2, 2026.

AffirmIts own range8Stripe Docs, Affirm payments, read November 2, 2026$35 to $30,000

The often-quoted "$999,999.99 per charge" is the non-card limit. For cards, Stripe adds that networks "can impose charge amount limits that are more restrictive than digit number, depending on currency and region"1Stripe Docs, Supported currencies: minimum and maximum charge amounts, read November 2, 2026. The minimum is $0.501Stripe Docs, Supported currencies: minimum and maximum charge amounts, read November 2, 2026.

So a $15,000 order goes through technically. Whether it stays in your balance is a risk question, not a limit.

Why one large payment can freeze your payouts

Because it doesn't look like your account. Stripe's published reasons for a reserve include5Stripe Support, Reserves: frequently asked questions, read November 2, 2026:

  • "The business belongs to an industry with longer-than-average delivery windows"
  • "The business has an increased risk of not fulfilling customer orders"
  • "The account has elevated dispute activity"
  • "The account shows an unexplainable sharp increase in processing volume"

A $20,000 sale on an account that averages $300 is a sharp increase. A coaching program delivered over six months is a long delivery window.

Stripe's agreement adds two triggers that fit high-ticket sales exactly: transactions "for goods or services not immediately deliverable to the Customer without first obtaining Stripe's consent", and a material change "in the average time between the initial charge and fulfillment"4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3, 5.5 and 8, modified September 28, 2026.

Under its terms, once a trigger applies, Stripe may change the payout schedule, "delay or cancel the payout of funds", or set up a reserve4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3, 5.5 and 8, modified September 28, 2026.

Tell Stripe before the big sale

The agreement asks you to. You "must immediately notify Stripe" if you experience or anticipate "a material change in the average time between the initial charge and fulfillment" (Stripe Payments Terms, section 8)4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3, 5.5 and 8, modified September 28, 2026. On request, you must also share refund and shipping policies, "data on captured but unfulfilled charges" and the time between capture and fulfillment4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3, 5.5 and 8, modified September 28, 2026.

  1. Update your business details before you launch a high-ticket offer: product, price range, delivery time.
  2. Explain the delivery model if you charge before you deliver: preorders, programs that run for months, made-to-order goods. Stripe's consent matters for goods "not immediately deliverable"4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3, 5.5 and 8, modified September 28, 2026.
  3. Warn Stripe support ahead of a launch that will multiply your usual volume.
  4. Keep a delivery file per order: tracking, signature, access logs for digital programs.
  5. Answer document requests the same day. A settlement pause lasts until the task is done6Stripe Support, Settlement pauses FAQ, read November 2, 2026.

Stripe also warns that for many networks, extended windows "are only for cases where you don't know the final amount that you'll capture at the time of authorization"3Stripe Docs, Place an extended hold on an online card payment, read November 2, 2026. Holding a known price for a month to delay shipping isn't that case. More on holds: credit card pre-authorization holds.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum amount you can charge on Stripe?

For most card payments, Stripe accepts amounts up to 12 digits in the currency's smallest unit; American Express is limited to 9 digits, or $9,999,999.99. Most other payment methods stop at 999,999.99. Card networks can set lower limits by currency and region.

Does Stripe hold large payments?

Not automatically, but a large sale can trigger a review. Stripe lists a "sharp increase in processing volume" and "longer-than-average delivery windows" among its reasons for a reserve. Its terms also let it delay payouts for goods not immediately deliverable without its consent.

How long can Stripe hold an authorization?

Typically 7 days for online card payments, 5 days for Visa merchant-initiated payments. With an extended authorization, available on IC+ pricing, holds can last up to 30 days on Visa and Mastercard. Uncaptured authorizations expire and the funds go back to the customer.

Can I offer financing for high-ticket items on Stripe?

Yes, through Affirm, for US orders from $35 to $30,000, paid to you upfront. Affirm excludes B2B, professional services such as consulting, and pre-orders, and restricts some MCCs, including educational services.

How do I avoid a Stripe reserve on large orders?

Tell Stripe first. Its terms ask you to notify it of a material change in the time between charge and fulfillment. Update your business details, warn support before a launch, keep delivery proof, and answer document requests fast.
