Stripe Holding Your Funds: Payout Holds, Delays and How to Get Paid

Why Stripe is holding your money: the eight kinds of payout hold, how long Stripe says each lasts, and what releases it.

Article summary

TL;DR

Stripe holds funds for one of eight reasons: a first payout, a flagged payment, missing verification, a settlement pause, a reserve, disputes, a negative balance or a risk review. Each has its own clock, from 14 days for a flagged payment to typically 120 days for a risk pause. Your Dashboard banner or email usually names the fix.

  • Stripe "typically schedules your initial payout to complete within 7–14 days" after your first live payment; in the US, later card payouts settle in 2 business days.
  • A payment flagged as likely fraud is held, and "will automatically be released 14 days from the notification date".
  • A settlement pause "doesn't have a standard scheduled expiration date": it lasts until the issue is resolved.
  • Stripe says reserves normally last 30 to 90 days, reviewed a few days before expiry.
  • Under its Unacceptable Risk Policy, updated July 29, 2026, Stripe typically pauses payouts for 120 days from its first email.

Find out which hold you have

Start with the red banner at the top of the Dashboard and the email Stripe sent. A red banner means requirements are outstanding11Stripe Support, What is the verification status of my account?, read November 2, 2026. Then match what you see to this table.

New account and flagged payments

These two holds are routine. Neither needs an appeal.

For a flagged charge, you can cancel the order if it looks fraudulent. If it's real, do nothing: the payout comes 14 days after the notice2Stripe Support, Payout availability delays, read November 2, 2026.

Verification and settlement pauses

These are the holds you can end yourself, and the ones most often left waiting.

Verification. When information is due, Stripe sets a deadline. Its docs say: "Stripe typically disables payouts on the account if we don't receive the information by the current_deadline", and charges can be disabled next if the account stays unresponsive4Stripe Docs, Handle verification with the API, read November 2, 2026. Stripe asks for "3-5 business days" to review documents once sent11Stripe Support, What is the verification status of my account?, read November 2, 2026. Details: Stripe account restricted.

Settlement pause. A newer tool. Stripe "temporarily directs affected payment proceeds" to a reserved balance until the underlying issue is resolved3Stripe Support, Settlement pauses FAQ, read November 2, 2026. What it means for you3Stripe Support, Settlement pauses FAQ, read November 2, 2026:

  • Funds already available are not held. Only new and pending proceeds go to the reserve.
  • You can keep taking payments.
  • Open the task. Go to the Account status page under Settings and select View task, if shown.
  • Expect a lag. "Submitting a task doesn't always remove the settlement pause immediately."
  • Release keeps the original timing. Funds return to your balance with their normal availability date.

If you sell through a platform on a Stripe Express account, payouts can also pause for missing tax forms. Stripe says they "should be unpaused within two business days" once the W-8 or W-9 and other requirements are in10Stripe Support (Express), What does it mean that my payouts are paused or my payments are blocked?, read November 2, 2026.

Disputes and a negative balance

A dispute pulls money out of your balance, not just a payout. When a cardholder disputes, Stripe "Debits the disputed amount, plus a dispute fee, from your Stripe account", and the funds "are held for the entire duration of the dispute"7Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read November 2, 2026. The full cycle "can take 2-3 months"7Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read November 2, 2026.

If refunds and disputes exceed new sales, your balance goes negative. Stripe's own example: 100 USD in payments and 200 USD in refunds leaves -100 USD, and without new sales "Stripe creates a payout that debits your bank account"1Stripe Docs, Payouts, read November 2, 2026. Your bank account must accept debits for this reason1Stripe Docs, Payouts, read November 2, 2026.

Example

You take $8,000 in a week, refund $1,500, and receive $2,000 of disputes plus fees. Your payout shrinks to what's left, and a promotion with heavy refunds can push the balance below zero. Illustrative figures.

Reserves

A reserve holds a share of each sale for a window. Stripe says this is normally 30 to 90 days6Stripe Support, Reserves (topic page), read November 2, 2026, and that reserves "do not impact a business's ability to continue accepting payments"5Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026.

A few days before expiry, Stripe reviews the account and can remove, lower, raise or extend it; "In some rare cases, a reserve may be required indefinitely"5Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026.

Fixed or rolling, how to appeal and what to send: Stripe reserve.

The risk pause: typically 120 days

This is the long one. Under the Unacceptable Risk Policy, Stripe can restrict charges, pause payouts, reverse payments or start closing the account, and "will typically restrict or pause payouts to the User's bank account for 120 days from the date the User receives the initial email"8Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026.

The agreement also lets Stripe "change the Payout Schedule or delay or cancel the payout of funds" once a trigger applies9Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms: Stripe Payments Terms section 5.5, modified September 28, 2026. How to get paid

  1. Read the banner and the email. They name the hold and the task11Stripe Support, What is the verification status of my account?, read November 2, 2026.
  2. Submit every open task the same day. Verification and settlement pauses end only when Stripe has what it asked for3Stripe Support, Settlement pauses FAQ, read November 2, 20264Stripe Docs, Handle verification with the API, read November 2, 2026.
  3. Answer disputes on time. Responses are usually due in 7 to 21 days7Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read November 2, 2026. Lost disputes come out of your balance.
  4. Keep the account open. Closing it doesn't release funds, and you lose the tools to answer disputes.
  5. Appeal what can be appealed. Reserves from the Balance page; risk actions from the Dashboard5Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 20268Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026. What to send: Stripe account under review.
  6. Route new sales elsewhere if the hold is long. A second, declared processor keeps cash coming while Stripe reviews. See multiple merchant accounts.

Stripe releases funds on evidence and on its own schedules. Work on what you control first.

Plan cash around a hold

Budget with the slowest money you have, not the fastest. A hold rarely releases in one block.

In this example, $4,000 is a flagged payment released at 14 days, $9,000 a settlement pause lifted after you submit a task, and $18,000 a 90-day reserve. Plan stock and ad spend on the last date, not the first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Stripe holding my money?

Usually for one of eight reasons: a first payout, a flagged payment, missing verification, a settlement pause, a reserve, a dispute, a negative balance or a risk review. The red Dashboard banner and Stripe's email name the reason and any task. Each hold has its own clock and its own fix.

How long can Stripe hold my funds?

It depends on the hold. A first payout takes 7 to 14 days, a flagged payment 14 days, a reserve normally 30 to 90 days. A settlement pause has no set end. A risk pause typically lasts 120 days from the first email, then goes to a formal review.

Why are my Stripe payouts paused but I can still take payments?

Because most holds stop payouts, not payments. A reserve or a settlement pause lets you keep selling while part of the money is held. Missing verification first disables payouts; charges can follow if the account stays unresponsive. Submit the open task to restart payouts.

Can Stripe keep my money?

Stripe uses your balance to pay refunds and disputes. After a risk pause, its formal review can release all or part of the balance, keep holding it, or cancel the payout where risk continues or the law requires. Most holds end with a release; read your notice to know which applies.

How do I get Stripe to release my funds faster?

Submit every task in the Dashboard the same day, answer disputes before their deadline, and appeal reserves or risk actions with statements and delivery proof. A flagged payment releases on its own after 14 days. Don't open a second Stripe account for the same business.
