Stripe Reserve: How Long It Lasts and How to Get It Released

How a Stripe reserve works: fixed or rolling, why Stripe applied it, how long it lasts, how it is funded, and how to get it lowered or released.

Article summary

TL;DR

A Stripe reserve holds a share of your sales for a set window to cover refunds and disputes. Stripe says it normally lasts 30 to 90 days, reviews it a few days before it ends, and can lower, remove, extend or, rarely, keep it indefinitely. You keep taking payments. To reduce it, appeal from the Balance page with proof.

  • Stripe defines a reserve as "a temporary hold on a portion of a business's funds for a predetermined period of time", normally 30 to 90 days.
  • Stripe uses fixed reserves, released on a set date, and rolling reserves, released transaction by transaction after a window such as 30 days.
  • A few days before expiry, Stripe runs "another credit review" and may remove, decrease, increase or extend the reserve.
  • "In some rare cases, a reserve may be required indefinitely". The agreement, modified September 28, 2026, releases funds only once Stripe is satisfied the risk is mitigated.
  • Stripe's appeal guide asks for 12 months of statements from your previous processor if you've used Stripe under 6 months, plus delivery proof from the last 30 to 60 days.

What a Stripe reserve is

A reserve is cash Stripe keeps back, not a fee. Stripe's FAQ: "A reserve is a temporary hold on a portion of a business's funds for a predetermined period of time"2Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026. Its reserves page adds that this is normally 30 to 90 days, "to give time for customers' refunds and chargebacks to process"1Stripe Support, Reserves (topic page), read November 2, 2026.

Two things don't change while it runs:

Why a window of months: cardholders can typically dispute within 120 days of the payment, and a dispute takes 2 to 3 months to resolve8Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read November 2, 2026.

Fixed or rolling: the two types Stripe uses

Read the reserve email. It gives the type, the percentage and the window or release date1Stripe Support, Reserves (topic page), read November 2, 20262Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026.

TypeHow Stripe describes itStripe's exampleWhen the money comes back
Fixed"a set percentage of funds from each new transaction is held in reserve until a specified release date"25% held until a fixed dateAll at once, on the release date1Stripe Support, Reserves (topic page), read November 2, 2026
RollingA percentage of each transaction held for a set window25% held for 30 daysEach day's share, once its window has passed1Stripe Support, Reserves (topic page), read November 2, 2026

Fig. 1Same 25%, two release patterns

  1. Fixed reserve

Every sale feeds the reserve until one release date. Cash comes back in one block.

  2. Rolling reserve

Each sale is held for the same window, then released. Cash comes back every day.

  3. Review before expiry

A few days before the end, Stripe reviews the account and may change the terms.

Why Stripe put a reserve on your account

Stripe sizes a reserve on "industry conditions, payment activity, dispute rate, refund rate, and financial stability"2Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026. Its FAQ names four common reasons2Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026:

Reason Stripe givesWhat it usually looks like
"longer-than-average delivery windows" in your industryPreorders, made-to-order goods, events, long programs
"an increased risk of not fulfilling customer orders"Backorders, a supplier problem, thin stock
"elevated dispute activity"Disputes rising after an offer or a new traffic source
"an unexplainable sharp increase in processing volume"A launch or a promotion Stripe didn't hear about

Reserves often follow a credit review. Stripe says it "reviews accounts continuously", and that with increased risk it "may need to hold a portion of each transaction in reserve"7Stripe Support, Credit Account Review Process FAQ, read November 2, 2026. In its agreement, a negative balance or activity that "presents an unacceptable risk" are among the triggers3Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms: Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3 and 5.5, Stripe Financial Services Terms section 3.3, modified September 28, 2026.

How long a Stripe reserve lasts

The notice sets the window. What happens at the end is a review, not an automatic release.

  3. ReviewA few days before expiry

the end date is a review date

Stripe Support, Reserves and Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026.

The agreement is stricter than the FAQ. Under the Stripe Financial Services Terms, Stripe releases reserve funds only if it "is satisfied that the relevant risk exposure has been mitigated"3Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms: Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3 and 5.5, Stripe Financial Services Terms section 3.3, modified September 28, 2026. No fixed number of days appears there.

Watch out

A 120-day hold is not a reserve. Under the Unacceptable Risk Policy, Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts" for 120 days from its first email, then runs a formal review4Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026. Check which of the two your email names.

How the reserve is funded, and where to see it

Stripe can fund a reserve in three ways under the Financial Services Terms3Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms: Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3 and 5.5, Stripe Financial Services Terms section 3.3, modified September 28, 2026:

  • From your sales, using funds Stripe owes you for transactions.
  • By debiting your bank account.
  • With funds you provide when Stripe asks.

Stripe emails you "if and when we need to apply a reserve", and "The status of a reserve is also viewable on the Balance page of the Stripe Dashboard"2Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026. Check that page after every payout to see what is held and when it is due.

Reserve, payout pause or settlement pause?

Three Stripe tools hold money. They work differently, and the fix differs.

How to get a Stripe reserve lowered or released

Bring evidence before the review date. Stripe's FAQ: "It may be possible to appeal a reserve depending on the risk profile of the account"2Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026.

  1. Find the appeal option on the Balance page. If it isn't there, contact Stripe2Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026.
  2. Send statements. Under 6 months on Stripe: "your most recent 12 months of processing statements" from your previous provider, showing dispute and refund rates. Over 6 months: recent bank statements6Stripe Support, Best practices for appealing credit payments restrictions, read November 2, 2026.
  3. Prove delivery. Proof of fulfillment for the last 30 to 60 days: inventory, vendor receipts, shipping schedules, invoices6Stripe Support, Best practices for appealing credit payments restrictions, read November 2, 2026.
  4. Explain your disputes. Their causes, your customer exchanges, and how you verify orders6Stripe Support, Best practices for appealing credit payments restrictions, read November 2, 2026.
  5. Give a dated plan. Stripe asks you to "Be very specific about the changes you'll make", with a timeline6Stripe Support, Best practices for appealing credit payments restrictions, read November 2, 2026.
  6. Ask for a step. A lower percentage or a shorter window is easier to get than a full removal.

When you stop processing on Stripe

The reserve doesn't come back the day you stop. It is released on its own schedule, after disputes and refunds on your last sales are paid from it2Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read November 2, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Stripe hold a reserve?

For the window in the reserve email. Stripe says reserves normally last 30 to 90 days. A few days before expiry, it reviews the account and can remove, lower, raise or extend the reserve. In rare cases, a reserve is required indefinitely.

Will I get my Stripe reserve back?

Yes, minus what it paid out. Refunds and disputes on reserved transactions are taken from it first, and "Reserve funds will be released in full at the end of the reserve period if they are not needed to cover disputes or refunds". Under the agreement, release follows Stripe's view that the risk is mitigated.

Can I appeal a Stripe reserve?

Sometimes. If the option shows on the Balance page, use it; if not, contact Stripe. Send processing or bank statements, delivery proof for the last 30 to 60 days, an explanation of your disputes and a dated plan. Ask for a lower percentage before a full release.

What percentage does Stripe hold in reserve?

Stripe doesn't publish a standard rate. Its own examples use 25%, and the real figure is set per account from industry, payment activity, dispute and refund rates, and financial stability. Your reserve email states your percentage or amount.

Does a Stripe reserve stop me from accepting payments?

No. "Reserves do not impact a business's ability to continue accepting payments with Stripe". A reserve only delays part of your payouts. A settlement pause or a risk action is different: payments or charges can be affected too.
