Stripe Chargeback Thresholds and What Happens Above Them
The dispute levels that matter on Stripe: its 0.75% benchmark, Visa and Mastercard limits, what counts, and what Stripe can do above them.
Article summary
TL;DR
Stripe doesn't publish a hard limit of its own. Its docs say the industry treats dispute activity above 0.75% as excessive, and that a sudden spike can trigger action earlier. The fines come from the card networks: Visa from 1.5% and 1,500 disputes and fraud reports a month, Mastercard from 1.5% and 100 chargebacks.
- Stripe's docs call dispute activity "above 0.75%" excessive by industry standard, and warn that "a sudden spike or steep upward trend" can trigger a program earlier.
- Visa's VAMP "Excessive" level is 1.5% and 1,500 cases a month in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America; it was 2.2% before April 1, 2026.
- Mastercard's ECM starts at 100 chargebacks and 1.5%; fines begin in month two at $1,000 and reach $100,000 a month from month 19.
- "All disputes, whether they're won or lost, count towards your dispute rate".
- Stripe's terms let it hold a reserve or delay payouts on "Excessive Disputes, Refunds or Reversals".

This page covers Stripe only: its numbers, its dashboard, its terms. For how chargebacks work at any processor, see chargebacks for merchants. The rest of our Stripe guides are in the Stripe hub.
Stripe's number: 0.75%, and the two ways it counts
The 0.75% is a benchmark, not a contract clause. Stripe's docs say "the credit card processing industry standard recognizes dispute activity above 0.75% as excessive" and add that Stripe will "proactively reach out" when activity rises1Stripe Docs, Measuring disputes, read November 2, 2026. You won't find 0.75% in the Stripe Services Agreement.
The Dashboard shows two figures, and only one of them matters for the thresholds1Stripe Docs, Measuring disputes, read November 2, 2026:
| Metric | What it divides | Where you find it | What it's for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dispute activity | Disputes received in a period, over successful payments in that period (by dispute date) | Dashboard, Analytics | What the card networks use for their programs1Stripe Docs, Measuring disputes, read November 2, 2026 |
| Dispute rate | Disputes on the payments made in a period (by charge date) | Dashboard, Radar | Finding which sales or attacks caused disputes1Stripe Docs, Measuring disputes, read November 2, 2026 |
Example
Stripe's own case. You process 1,000 payments in a week and receive 10 disputes, only 3 of them on that week's payments. Dispute activity is 1%; dispute rate is 0.3%1Stripe Docs, Measuring disputes, read November 2, 2026.
The dispute rate also keeps moving for 120 days, because cardholders can generally dispute that long after a payment1Stripe Docs, Measuring disputes, read November 2, 202611Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read October 14, 2026. To estimate a network ratio on a US account, Stripe says to count payments for a calendar month and disputes from the 5th of that month to the 5th of the next2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
The card network thresholds behind it
The fines come from Visa and Mastercard, through Stripe. Each network runs its own programs, with its own formula2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
| Program | What it counts | Threshold that triggers it |
|---|---|---|
| Visa VAMP, "Excessive" | Disputes plus fraud reports (TC40), over captured payments of the same month | 1.5% and 1,500 cases (US, Canada, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America), down from 2.2% before April 1, 20262Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 20263Visa, Visa Acquirer Monitoring Program fact sheet, 2025; 2.2%, 150 cases and $75,000 in CEMEA2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026 |
| Visa VAMP, "Non-compliant" | Same | 0.5% and 5 cases; Visa "may assess fees"2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026 |
| Visa Secure Excessive Fraud (US only) | Fraud on 3DS-authenticated Visa payments | $75,000 and 0.9%; you lose the liability shift on domestic 3DS2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026 |
| Visa MERP (Asia Pacific, from October 2026) | Fraud, disputes and authorization declines, together | Not published by Visa2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026 |
| Mastercard ECM | Chargebacks this month, over payments of the previous month | 100 to 299 chargebacks and 1.5% to 2.99%2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026 |
| Mastercard HECM | Same | 300 chargebacks or more and 3%2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026 |
| Mastercard EFM | Fraud chargebacks, with low 3DS use | 1,000+ ecommerce payments, over $50,000 of fraud, over 0.50%, 3DS on 10% or less2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026 |

The counts matter as much as the ratios. A small store at 2% with 40 Mastercard chargebacks isn't in ECM, which needs 1002Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026. It can still be above Stripe's benchmark, and Stripe acts on its own risk view1Stripe Docs, Measuring disputes, read November 2, 20264Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms: Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3 to 5.5, modified September 28, 2026.
What counts toward the ratio, and what doesn't
More than the disputes you see. The networks count every dispute where funds move, whatever the reason or outcome2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
Counts:
- Won disputes, and lost ones1Stripe Docs, Measuring disputes, read November 2, 2026.
- Visa early fraud warnings (TC40), which VAMP adds to disputes; a payment in both reports counts twice2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- Disputes Stripe handles for you and hides from your Dashboard, for example on a payment you already refunded2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
Doesn't count:
- Inquiries that never turn into a returned payment2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- Disputes resolved through pre-dispute tools such as Stripe's dispute prevention (Verifi RDR, Ethoca), and Visa fraud reports that qualified for Compelling Evidence 3.02Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- Refunds: programs don't consider them when identifying disputes, so a refund doesn't erase a dispute already raised2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
That's why your Dashboard can show less than Visa's report. Stripe also notes that multiple merchant IDs, descriptor formatting and a MID change mid-month can create gaps2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026. Formulas for every network: chargeback rate.
How Visa sees your Stripe account
By descriptor and acquirer, not by Stripe account. Visa identifies an account by the static part of its statement descriptor and its acquiring bank, so one Stripe business can be several accounts to Visa2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- One descriptor in Ireland, France and Germany is one account: Visa aggregates EU volume2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- One descriptor in Canada and another used in Canada and the US are three accounts2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- To aggregate, Stripe suggests the same static prefix on every descriptor, and asking Stripe to contact Visa when you change existing ones2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
Watch out
Spreading sales across descriptors, accounts or processors to stay under a threshold is evasion. Stripe lists "Evasion of card network chargeback monitoring programs" among prohibited uses7Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, updated September 22, 2026, and Visa can fine the acquirer up to $25,000 per merchant per month for altering merchant data to avoid its programs10Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, section 12.5.3.2, edition April 18, 2026.
What happens above the threshold
It escalates, and Stripe acts before the networks do. Here is the order Stripe's docs and terms describe.
- Stripe reaches out when activity rises, and can warn you when its models predict excessive activity ahead1Stripe Docs, Measuring disputes, read November 2, 2026.
- The network places the account in a program, and Stripe notifies you2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- You send a remediation plan. Stripe offers a template and relays information to the networks each month2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- Fines are passed on. Visa assesses fees above "Excessive"; Mastercard fines from month two2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- Stripe protects itself. On "Excessive Disputes, Refunds or Reversals", its terms allow a reserve, a changed payout schedule, delayed or cancelled payouts and suspended processing4Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms: Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3 to 5.5, modified September 28, 2026.
- The account can be closed. Under the Unacceptable Risk Policy, payouts are typically paused 120 days from the first email, then reviewed5Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026.
- A listing can follow. Code 4 on MATCH covers Mastercard chargebacks above 1% of sales and $5,000 or more, kept 5 years6Stripe Docs, Terminated merchant files (MATCH and VMSS), read October 27, 2026.

You leave a Mastercard program after 3 consecutive months below its threshold2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026. Ignoring a program can end with the network refusing your payments, which "can put your ability to accept any credit card payments at risk"2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026. Bringing the ratio down on Stripe
Start from your reason codes, then use the tools Stripe already has. Stripe's best practices target canceled subscriptions, missing products and friendly fraud2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.

A few Stripe specifics are worth knowing:
- Early fraud warnings arrive by API and by email on payments not yet disputed or refunded2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026. A refund can stop the dispute, but the warning still counts in VAMP2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- 3D Secure is included on standard pricing8Stripe, Pricing and fees (United States), page as captured October 18, 2026, read November 2, 2026. On EFM, low 3DS use is one of the four triggers2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.
- Card testing has its own VAMP track: 300,000 enumerated attempts and 20%, without fines2Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026.

What each dispute costs on Stripe
On top of the ratio, each dispute costs money. In the US, Stripe charges $15 when a dispute arrives and $15 more if you counter it, returned only if you win; Smart Disputes takes 30% of the amount on disputes you win8Stripe, Pricing and fees (United States), page as captured October 18, 2026, read November 2, 2026. The disputed amount leaves your balance as soon as the dispute opens11Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read October 14, 2026.
Stripe also sizes reserves on, among other signals, your dispute and refund rates9Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read October 27, 2026. Fee by fee across processors: chargeback fees.
By industry
| Industry | What changes | Guide |

| Skincare | Forgotten refills, results that didn't match the ad, skin reactions handled badly | Chargebacks for skincare brands |
| Fitness | Late, damaged or not-as-pictured equipment and forgotten sports nutrition subscriptions drive most disputes | Chargebacks for fitness brands |
| Info products | Buyers who expected an income, long programs they stopped using, and forgotten memberships or payment plans | Chargebacks for info product businesses |
| Online pharmacy | Card holds read as charges, orders charged then refused, refills billed before shipping; Visa makes the acquirer check pharmacy disputes daily | Chargebacks for online pharmacies |
| Telehealth | Charges patients didn't expect: before a clinician's review, after a cancellation, or under a descriptor they don't recognize | Chargebacks for telehealth companies |
