The Online Pharmacy Sales Funnel: Offer and Page Structure

Build a direct-to-consumer pharmacy funnel: per-fill, refill plan or membership offer, landing page, prescription step, capture and refills.

Article summary

TL;DR

A direct-to-consumer pharmacy funnel has seven steps: ad or search, landing page, eligibility, prescription, checkout, pharmacist review, then shipment and refills. Pick the offer first (price per fill, a refill plan or a membership), because it decides your pages and your billing. Authorize the card at checkout and capture it only after the prescription is approved.

  • Law firm Frier Levitt describes four DTC pharmacy structures, from manufacturer programs to pharmacy-anchored models, and flags inducement, fee-splitting and state advertising rules (January 2026).
  • Google restricts "the use of prescription drug terms in ads, landing pages, and keywords". Your landing page is part of the review.
  • An online pharmacy that dispenses controlled substances must post a compliance statement on its homepage under 21 U.S.C. § 831.
  • Recurring plans fall under ROSCA: clear terms before billing details, express consent, and a simple way to stop.
  • The FDA warns consumers against prices "that seem too good to be true". Aggressive discounts can cost you trust.

This guide is part of our playbook on the best ecommerce platform for online pharmacies. The general guide, for any business: checkout optimization.

The online pharmacy funnel, step by step

Each step answers one question. If a step leaves it open, visitors stop there.

#StepWhat it must settlePage or tool
1Ad, search or referral"Is this for me?"Certified ads, content, partner referral
2Landing page"Is this pharmacy legitimate, and what does it cost?"Landing page
3Eligibility"Can you ship to my state?"State selector before the form
4Prescription"How do you get my prescription?"Transfer, upload or clinician review
5Checkout"When am I charged?"Card authorized, not captured
6Pharmacist review"When will I know?"Status email, generic wording
7Shipment and refills"When is the next one?"Capture, ship, rebill on ship day

  2. Landing pageIs this pharmacy legitimate, and what does it cost?

  4. PrescriptionHow do you get my prescription?
  5. CheckoutWhen am I charged? Card authorized, not captured
  6. Pharmacist reviewWhen will I know?
  7. Shipment and refillsWhen is the next one?

Step 5: authorized, not yet charged.

The seven steps from the table above.

Steps 3 to 6 do not exist in a regular store. They are where pharmacy funnels lose most visitors: see why your online pharmacy gets traffic but no sales.

Choose the offer: per fill, refill plan or membership

What you sell shapes the whole funnel. Three offers dominate online pharmacy, often combined.

Most pharmacies combine two.

From the table above.
  • Most pharmacies combine two: a price per fill for first orders, then a refill plan.
  • Membership works for frequent buyers, less for one-off prescriptions.
  • Treatment plans that include a consultation are a telehealth offer: see the telehealth sales funnel.

Plan design: subscription billing for online pharmacies and memberships and VIP clubs.

Anatomy of the landing page

A pharmacy landing page answers trust and price before it asks for anything.

  1. Headline: what you do, for whom, where you ship. No health claims.
  2. How it works: three steps (prescription, review, delivery) with realistic timing.
  3. Price: the full price per fill or per plan, including shipping and any review fee.
  4. Trust block: state licenses with links to each board, US address, pharmacist contact, accreditation if you have it.
  5. Prescription notice: a valid prescription is required, in plain words.
  6. FAQ: refills, cancellation, privacy, delivery.
  7. One call to action: "Check eligibility" or "Start your order".

Trust and price before any ask.

Watch out

Keep prescription drug names out of ad copy and landing pages until you have checked what Google's policy allows for your certified account. Google restricts their use in "ads, landing pages, and keywords"2Google Ads policy, Healthcare and medicines, read November 2, 2026.

The prescription step

There are three ways in. Most pharmacies offer the first two; the third is a telehealth flow.

Checkout, capture and refills

The payment flow follows the prescription, not the cart.

  1. Authorize at checkout. The card is held for the order amount.
  2. Review. The pharmacist, or the clinician in a telehealth flow, approves or declines.
  3. Capture or void. Approval captures the hold; a decline voids it and nothing is charged7Tagada docs, Tagada Rx introduction, read November 2, 2026.
  4. Ship, then rebill. Refills bill "the day the pharmacy ships", not on a fixed date7Tagada docs, Tagada Rx introduction, read November 2, 2026.
  5. No refill on a declined case. Tagada's documentation states that "declined, cancelled, and errored cases never rebill"8Tagada docs, Tagada Rx how it works, read November 2, 2026.

Example

Write next to the pay button: "Your card is authorized now. You are charged only if your prescription is approved. Refills are billed when they ship." Tagada's documentation notes that a hold is not clinical approval and the storefront must make that clear7Tagada docs, Tagada Rx introduction, read November 2, 2026.

How Tagada helps

A prescription funnel from checkout hold to ship-day refill

For prescription brands, Tagada Rx runs the whole funnel: "Storefront, doctors, pharmacy and payments in one stack", with hold at checkout, capture on approval and rebill on ship9Tagada Rx, tagada.io/rx, read November 2, 2026. It is open by application; terms are on the Tagada Rx page.

For brands that run their own checkout:

  • Checkout with Apple Pay and Google Pay, order bumps, one-click upsells and A/B tests on each step
  • Subscriptions with trials, billing cycles, retries and automatic recovery
  • Server-side events to Meta, Google and TikTok
  • Runs standalone, on Shopify, on WooCommerce or headless

Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

Frequently asked questions

What is the direct-to-consumer pharmacy model?

A pharmacy that sells to patients online, usually at a cash price, instead of only through insurance networks and retail counters. Frier Levitt describes four structures: manufacturer-driven programs, platform models, hybrid provider models and pharmacy-anchored models. Each one still needs licensed dispensing and a valid prescription.

How do online pharmacies make money?

From the margin on each fill, from recurring refill plans, and sometimes from membership fees or non-prescription products. The offer you choose decides which. Membership and discount programs need a legal review if any customer is covered by Medicare, because of inducement rules.

Should an online pharmacy sell on subscription?

For medications taken over time, a refill plan fits: it renews the same prescription and bills on a cycle. Follow ROSCA: show the terms before card entry, get express consent and offer a simple way to cancel. Bill when the order ships, not on a calendar date.

What should a pharmacy landing page include?

How it works, the full price, state licenses with links to the boards, a US address, a way to reach a pharmacist, a clear prescription notice and one call to action. Avoid health claims, and check Google's policy before naming prescription drugs.

When should I charge the customer?

Authorize the card at checkout and capture it after the prescription is approved. A decline voids the authorization, so nothing is charged or refunded. Say so next to the pay button.
