Sales Funnels for Online Pharmacies
The 6 steps of an online pharmacy funnel and what your funnel builder must handle: eligibility, a card hold before review, refills and health data.
Article summary
TL;DR
An online pharmacy funnel has six steps: landing page, eligibility questions, checkout with a card hold, prescription review, dispensing with capture, and refills. Your funnel builder must branch on answers, hold the card until review, keep health answers out of marketing tools, and bill refills when the pharmacy ships. Regular funnel builders don't by default.
- An online card authorization from Visa or Mastercard is valid for 7 days for customer-initiated payments, per Stripe; if it expires, the funds are released.
- The FDA tells patients a safe online pharmacy "Requires a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional". Your funnel cannot skip that step.
- Google restricts prescription drug terms "in ads, landing pages, and keywords": the first step of your funnel is covered.
- Shopify does not support uploading HIPAA Protected Health Information. Plan where intake answers go.

The 6 steps of an online pharmacy funnel
Each step has a job, and each asks something specific of the builder.
| Step | Its job | What the builder must do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Landing page | Explain the service, show licensing | Follow ad platform rules on drug terms3Google Ads Help, Healthcare and medicines policy, read November 2, 2026 |
| 2. Eligibility questions | Screen out patients who cannot be served | Branch on answers; send ineligible patients to a clear exit |
| 3. Checkout | Take payment details and consent | Authorize the card without capturing it |
| 4. Prescription review | A pharmacist verifies the prescription | Wait for an approved or declined status from the pharmacy side |
| 5. Dispensing | Fill and ship | Capture on approval, void on decline |
| 6. Refills | Repeat orders within the prescription | Bill when the pharmacy ships, remind before supply runs out |

What a funnel builder must do for a pharmacy
Use this list to compare tools. A "no" on any of the first four is a reason to look elsewhere.
- Separate authorization and capture. Hold the card at checkout, capture later.
- Branching logic. Route patients by their answers, including an exit for those who are not eligible.
- A status from the pharmacy side. The funnel must react to "approved", "declined" and "shipped".
- Health answers stored outside marketing tools. Intake answers go to the pharmacy or clinical system, not to your email tool or pixels.
- Clear consent copy at checkout. The payment is not an approval.
- Refill billing tied to shipping, with retries when a card fails.
- Server-side purchase events that carry no product or health data.
- A/B tests on pages and checkout, without touching required disclosures.
A no on any of the first four is a reason to look elsewhere.

Payment: hold at checkout, capture after review
Charging the card at checkout and refunding declined orders costs you fees, support time and disputes. A hold avoids most of it.
- Checkout: the card is authorized for the order amount. Nothing is captured.
- Review: the pharmacist approves or declines.
- Approved: you capture the authorized amount and the order ships.
- Declined: you void the authorization. The patient is not charged.
Timing matters. Stripe lists a 7-day validity window for customer-initiated online card authorizations on Visa and Mastercard; after that, "the funds are released"1Stripe Docs, Place a hold on a payment method, authorization validity windows, read November 2, 2026. If review can take longer, plan an extended authorization or a new payment. Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.
Example
A patient checks out on Monday. The card shows a pending amount. The pharmacist approves on Tuesday, the order is captured and ships Wednesday. Had the review been declined, the hold would have been voided the same day, with no charge and no refund.

What happens to the card
- Monday: the card shows a pending amount.
- Tuesday: the pharmacist approves; the order is captured.
- Wednesday: the order ships.

- Your pharmacyTuesdayOrder approvedYour order is being prepared.
- Your pharmacyWednesdayOrder shippedYour order is on its way.
Declined: voided the same day, no charge and no refund.
Watch out
Some card statements do not distinguish a hold from a charge, which can confuse customers1Stripe Docs, Place a hold on a payment method, authorization validity windows, read November 2, 2026. Say it at checkout: "Your card is authorized now and charged only if your order is approved." The Tagada Rx docs say the same: the hold "is not clinical approval", and the storefront copy must make that clear6Tagada docs, Tagada Rx introduction, read November 2, 2026.
Remedora, a telehealth vendor, makes the same point about copy: the patient is "paying to enter a clinical process that may or may not result in a prescription"5Remedora, Telehealth ecommerce: how to sell prescriptions and health products online legally, March 30, 2026 (vendor article).
What a regular funnel builder gets wrong
Most funnel builders are made for products that ship the day they are paid.
| Default behavior | Problem for a pharmacy | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Charge at checkout | Refunds when a review is declined | Authorize, then capture on approval |
| One path for every visitor | Ineligible patients pay and get declined | Branch before checkout |
| Form answers sent to the CRM and pixels | Health data in marketing tools | Send answers to the pharmacy side only |
| Upsell any product after purchase | Prescription items need a prescription | Offer only items the patient can buy |
| Renewals on a calendar date | Patient charged for a fill that has not shipped | Bill on ship day |

How Tagada helps
A prescription funnel that holds, then captures or voids
Tagada Rx is a telehealth stack with storefront, doctors, pharmacy and payments in one place, LegitScript included. Its docs describe it as the layer that runs "intake, clinician review, e-prescribing, pharmacy fulfillment, and ship-day rebilling"6Tagada docs, Tagada Rx introduction, read November 2, 2026.
- Hold, then capture or void: approve captures the hold, decline voids it; money never leaves the card if the clinician does not prescribe6Tagada docs, Tagada Rx introduction, read November 2, 2026.
- Refills on ship day: recurring treatments rebill the day the pharmacy ships6Tagada docs, Tagada Rx introduction, read November 2, 2026.
- No PHI in Tagada storage: Tagada keeps routing data only6Tagada docs, Tagada Rx introduction, read November 2, 2026.
- Headless option: plug the same stack into an existing storefront through the SDK.
Tagada Rx serves US patients only and is open by application to a selected group of brands. Around it, the Tagada OS adds one-page checkout, order bumps, A/B tests, server-side tracking and block rules on IPs, emails and card patterns7Tagada docs, Block rules, read November 2, 2026.
