Does Shopify Allow Dropshipping?
Shopify promotes dropshipping and Shopify Payments can support it. What the terms ask, what the lists exclude, and why delivery times bring reserves.
Article summary
TL;DR
Yes. Shopify promotes dropshipping on its own site, and its staff has said "Shopify Payments can often support dropshipping stores." Shopify's terms ask you to tell customers when you use a third-party supplier. What gets stores in trouble is not the model but the products and the delivery times: long delays bring reserves and "item not received" disputes.
- Shopify's dropshipping page says: "Get started with a dropshipping business".
- Shopify's terms, updated October 20, 2026: "You should inform your customers if you use a third-party supplier".
- In the US, Shopify Payments applies Stripe's and PayPal's lists; Stripe names dropshipping only in its Japan section.
- Shopify lists "Industries with extended delivery timelines" and "Significant volume surges" among reasons for a reserve.
- Shopify Protect needs "valid tracking within 7 days" and the parcel "in transit to the customer within 10 days".

The platform vs. Shopify Payments

What Shopify's terms ask of a dropshipper
Three sentences in Shopify's terms matter more than the rest2Shopify Terms of Service, sections 4.1 and 4.5, last updated October 20, 2026:
- The supplier: "You should inform your customers if you use a third-party supplier." It sits in the same section as your public contact details, terms of service and refund policy.
- The seller: "You are the seller or merchant of record for all sales through the Services." The supplier ships; disputes and refunds are yours.
- The checkout: "You agree to use Shopify Checkout for any sales associated with your online store."
Shopify Payments adds one more: "you will fulfill all of your obligations to each customer for which you submit a Transaction"4Shopify Payments Terms of Service (US), Part I sections B5 and D5, read November 3, 2026. A late or missing parcel is your obligation, not the supplier's. What being the seller of record means: merchant of record.
What the lists exclude
The model isn't on the lists. Some supplier catalogs are. What gets dropshipping stores reserved or reviewed
Delivery time and growth speed. Shopify's reserve page names both8Shopify Help Center, Reserves on Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026:
- "Industries with extended delivery timelines": "Higher risk due to potential delays or disruptions in fulfilling orders." Shopify's examples are custom orders and pre-orders.
- "Significant volume surges": a winning product that doubles orders in a week.
- "Elevated chargeback activity": Shopify notes chargebacks can follow "delayed product delivery".
Account holds are a separate tool. Shopify lists information requests, product eligibility and "supportability", a business model Shopify Payments can't support9Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026.

Shipping times, Shopify Protect and disputes
Shopify Protect covers fraudulent chargebacks on Shop Pay orders, for US Shopify Payments accounts. It only protects orders fulfilled "with valid tracking within 7 days of the order being placed" and "in transit to the customer within 10 days"10Shopify Help Center, Considerations for using Shopify Protect, read November 3, 2026. A supplier that ships on day 12 takes the order out of the program.
Visa adds its own clock. A customer can dispute an order not received up to 120 days after the last date they expected to receive it, capped at 540 days after processing (condition 13.1)11Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, dispute condition 13.1, edition October 24, 2026. The delivery date you show at checkout sets that date.
