Does Stripe Allow Dropshipping?

Dropshipping isn't on Stripe's prohibited list outside Japan. What Stripe's terms say about shipping times, disputes and products, and why stores get closed.

Article summary

TL;DR

Yes, outside Japan. Stripe's prohibited and restricted list, updated September 22, 2026, doesn't name dropshipping, and Stripe's own guide says it "can support dropshippers". What Stripe prohibits is around it: counterfeits, unauthorized brand resale, undisclosed products. What closes stores is long shipping times and the disputes they bring.

  • Dropshipping appears on Stripe's list only in the Japan section, as advisory services on running a dropshipping business.
  • Stripe's 2016 blog listed "Drop shipping" among businesses that attract fraud; its September 2026 guide says "Stripe can support dropshippers".
  • Stripe can hold payouts or set a reserve for goods "not immediately deliverable" without its consent, or a material change in the time to fulfill.
  • Visa lets a customer dispute a non-delivery up to 120 days after the expected delivery date, within 540 days of processing.
  • Under its Unacceptable Risk Policy, Stripe typically pauses payouts for 120 days from its first email.

What Stripe's list says about dropshipping

The list doesn't ban the model. It bans what some dropshipping stores sell, and how1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, last updated September 22, 2026, read November 2, 2026 (US English version).

A store selling generic products under its own name, declared to Stripe, with honest pages, doesn't match any of these lines.

  1. Fits Stripe's list

Generic products sold under your own brand, declared at sign-up, with real delivery times.

  2. Prohibited everywhere

Replicas, unauthorized brand-name goods, illegally imported products, undeclared niches.

  3. Japan only

Where the "Stripe bans dropshipping" idea comes from

From Stripe itself, ten years ago. A Stripe blog post of August 12, 2016 listed "Drop shipping" under businesses that "attract money-laundering or fraud", and explained that risk is bigger "in businesses with a very long wait time between purchase and delivery"2Stripe Blog, Why some businesses aren't allowed, August 12, 2016.

What actually gets dropshipping accounts closed

Shipping times, and what they do to disputes. Stripe's 2026 guide itself warns that misrepresented delivery times lead to chargebacks that "risk getting your merchant account flagged"3Stripe Resources, How to start a dropshipping business, updated September 18, 2026. Its terms give the mechanics4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 3.7, 5.3, 5.5 and 8, modified September 28, 2026:

  • Transactions "for goods or services not immediately deliverable to the Customer without first obtaining Stripe's consent".
  • A material change "in the average time between the initial charge and fulfillment of Customer orders".
  • "Excessive Disputes, Refunds or Reversals".

Any of these lets Stripe "delay or cancel the payout of funds", set a reserve, or stop your payments4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 3.7, 5.3, 5.5 and 8, modified September 28, 2026. Its reserve criteria say the same in plain words: "longer-than-average delivery windows", "an increased risk of not fulfilling customer orders", "elevated dispute activity" and "an unexplainable sharp increase in processing volume"5Stripe Support, Reserves: frequently asked questions, read November 2, 2026.

most dropshipping closures start with a reserve

Based on Stripe Payments Terms section 5.3, the Reserves FAQ and the Unacceptable Risk Policy, read November 2, 2026.

If Stripe classifies the account as an unacceptable risk, it "will typically restrict or pause payouts" for 120 days from its first email7Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026. What follows, and how to appeal: Stripe closed your account.

Shipping times and disputes

A late parcel is a dispute waiting to happen. Under Visa's rules, a customer can dispute an order not received up to 120 days after the last date they expected to receive it, capped at 540 days after processing (condition 13.1)8Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, dispute condition 13.1. Stripe says disputes can generally be filed up to 120 days after payment9Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read October 14, 2026.

So the delivery date you show at checkout sets your exposure. A promise of "5 to 7 days" on an order that takes 25 turns every slow parcel into a claim you'll lose.

Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

Watch out

Stripe's agreement asks you to "immediately notify Stripe" if you experience or anticipate a material change in the time between charge and fulfillment (section 8)4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 3.7, 5.3, 5.5 and 8, modified September 28, 2026. A new supplier with longer lead times counts.

  2. Show real delivery times on product pages and at checkout, by country. Stripe requires that you not misrepresent the nature of a transaction (section 3.7)4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 3.7, 5.3, 5.5 and 8, modified September 28, 2026.
  3. Publish the policies Stripe asks for: return policy and process, refund and dispute policy, customer service contact, terms of promotions6Stripe Support, Business website for account activation FAQ, read November 2, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Does Stripe allow dropshipping?

Yes, outside Japan. Stripe's list, updated September 22, 2026, names dropshipping only in its Japan section, for advisory services. Stripe's own September 2026 guide says it "can support dropshippers". Counterfeits, unauthorized brand resale and undisclosed products remain prohibited everywhere.

Why did Stripe close my dropshipping account?

Usually delivery times and disputes. Stripe's terms let it hold payouts or close accounts for goods not immediately deliverable without its consent, a material change in fulfillment time, or excessive disputes. Its reserve criteria name long delivery windows and sharp volume spikes.

Is dropshipping on Stripe's prohibited list?

Not in general. It appears only under Japan: "Advisory services related to drop shipping and the resale of goods" and advisory services on running a dropshipping business. A Stripe blog post from 2016 listed it among fraud-prone businesses; the current list doesn't.

Does Shopify Payments allow dropshipping?

Shopify Payments applies its payment processors' lists: its US terms say prohibited categories "are provided by each Payment Processor". Since Stripe doesn't prohibit dropshipping outside Japan, the model is allowed; the products you sell must still fit Stripe's list.

How long can shipping take before Stripe holds my funds?

Stripe publishes no number of days. Its terms target goods "not immediately deliverable" without its consent and material changes in fulfillment time. Its reserve criteria mention "longer-than-average delivery windows" for your industry. Declare your delivery times and tell Stripe when they change.
