Does Stripe Allow Free Trial Offers?
Stripe allows free and paid trials, but prohibits trials with hidden pricing. What its tools automate, what stays on you, and what gets accounts reviewed.
Article summary
TL;DR
Yes. Stripe supports free trials and paid introductory prices on subscriptions, and its Billing tools send a reminder 7 days before a trial ends. What Stripe prohibits is "reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing" and negative option clubs. The consent before the card, the online cancellation and the proof stay your job.
- Stripe's list, updated September 22, 2026, prohibits "reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing".
- Trial offers handle free and paid trials, such as "1 USD for the first week", on API version 2026-09-30 or later.
- With customer emails on, Stripe sends a trial reminder 7 days before the end, or at once for trials under 7 days.
- Stripe appends "* TRIAL OVER" to the statement descriptor of the first paid charge, which is limited to 22 characters.
- Stripe says that if you don't use its settings, "you're still responsible for complying with the requirements".

This guide covers Stripe only: its rules, its trial tools and their limits. For the law and the card network rules behind every trial, see free trials and negative option billing.
What Stripe's rules say about trials
A trial is not a problem at Stripe. A trial the customer doesn't understand is. The line sits under "Unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices" on Stripe's prohibited list1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, last updated September 22, 2026, read November 2, 2026 (US English version):
Negative option marketing, negative option membership clubs, and reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing
The agreement says the same thing from the other side. When you use Stripe Payments, you must "not misrepresent the nature, amount and currency of each Transaction" and must not sell in a manner that "does not disclose material terms of a purchase in advance" (Stripe Payments Terms, section 3.7)2Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 3.7 and 5.3, modified September 28, 2026.

| A trial sold with "high-pressure upselling" | ProhibitedAs a practice, whatever the product1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, last updated September 22, 2026, read November 2, 2026 (US English version) |
Clear terms are the difference between row one and row three. Stripe doesn't publish a stricter rule than that.
Free trial periods and trial offers: Stripe's two tools
Stripe has two ways to run a trial on a subscription. For new integrations, Stripe says "we recommend using trial offers"9Stripe Docs, Compare trial offers and free trial periods, read November 2, 2026.
The two can't be combined on the same subscription9Stripe Docs, Compare trial offers and free trial periods, read November 2, 2026. If you sell through Payment Links, you are on free trial periods, and a paid introductory price needs another setup.
What Stripe automates, and what stays on you
Stripe's tools cover the notices. They don't cover the checkout design, and Stripe says so: "If you don't use these settings, you're still responsible for complying with the requirements"4Stripe Docs, Manage compliance requirements for trials and promotions, read November 2, 2026.

Two details trip merchants. The trial_will_end event fires 3 days before the end by default, not 7, so a reminder you send yourself on that event comes too late for Visa's notice3Stripe Docs, Configure trial offers on subscriptions, read November 2, 20267Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, section 5.8.17.2 and tables 5-20 and 5-21. And past the 10th character, a descriptor is overwritten with "* TRIAL OVER"4Stripe Docs, Manage compliance requirements for trials and promotions, read November 2, 2026: keep your short descriptor recognizable.
Visa requires a notice at least 7 days before the first charge when a trial or introductory offer ends, and a click-to-accept consent on the checkout screen for negative option merchants7Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, section 5.8.17.2 and tables 5-20 and 5-21. Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.
Trials without a card up front
Both of Stripe's trial tools can start a free period without a payment method. You then choose what happens when the trial ends and no card is on file3Stripe Docs, Configure trial offers on subscriptions, read November 2, 20269Stripe Docs, Compare trial offers and free trial periods, read November 2, 2026:
- Create an invoice (the default). If it can't be paid, the subscription goes
past_due. - Cancel the subscription.
- Pause it until you resume it.
A no-card trial removes the surprise charge, the main cause of trial disputes. It also converts fewer customers. If you collect the card first, the reminder and the clear terms above are what keep the first charge from becoming a chargeback.
Watch out
"pause" and "cancel" only apply when no card is attached. Prebilling that extends past the trial overrides both and keeps billing3Stripe Docs, Configure trial offers on subscriptions, read November 2, 2026.
What gets a trial account reviewed at Stripe
Disputes and changes Stripe didn't agree to. Its agreement lets it hold payouts, set a reserve or stop processing when an account has "excessive Disputes, Refunds or Reversals", or has "without Stripe's prior consent, changed its business model"2Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms sections 3.7 and 5.3, modified September 28, 2026. Adding a trial funnel to a store approved for one-off sales is that kind of change.
