Stripe for Non-US Owners: What Works

Using Stripe from outside the US: supported countries, the rules for an account in another country, what Stripe Atlas costs and how long the EIN takes.

Article summary

TL;DR

Stripe works for founders abroad when the business is set up where Stripe operates: a local entity, tax ID, physical address and real bank account there. Stripe Atlas forms a Delaware LLC or C corporation for $500, from almost anywhere. Without an SSN, the EIN takes 10 to 35 business days. Atlas doesn't guarantee Stripe accepts your business.

  • Stripe lists 51 countries and regions on its availability page, including India and Indonesia in preview.
  • An account in another country needs a legal entity, a tax ID, an address and a physical bank account there; "This can't be a virtual bank account".
  • Atlas costs US$500 once, then US$100 a year for the registered agent.
  • Atlas companies can take US card payments before the EIN arrives, with payouts capped at US$100,000 until then.
  • Stripe prohibits cross-border acquiring when your business address is outside the acquiring Stripe entity's jurisdiction, unless card network rules permit it.

Where Stripe works, and what "supported" means

Stripe looks at where your business is, not where your customers are. Its availability page says: "Once Stripe is supported in your country/region, you'll be able to sell to customers anywhere in the world"1Stripe, Global availability, read November 2, 2026 (US English version).

If your country is supported, open the account there. A US company is only the answer when your business really runs in the US, or when you sell mainly to US customers and set it up properly.

Opening a Stripe account in another country

Stripe allows it, with the same paperwork a local business would have. In the country of the account, you need2Stripe Support, Requirements to open a Stripe account in another country, read November 2, 2026:

RequirementDetail from Stripe
Legal entityRegistered in that country, for business accounts
Tax IDIssued in that country
AddressA physical address, not a P.O. box
Phone numberIn that country
IDA government-issued ID
WebsiteA working site
Bank accountA physical account in a supported currency; "This can't be a virtual bank account"

Two exceptions: Canadian accounts can use a USD bank account, and most European countries accept a EUR account held anywhere, as long as Stripe supports the country2Stripe Support, Requirements to open a Stripe account in another country, read November 2, 2026.

Watch out

A company formed abroad doesn't change where the business is run. Stripe prohibits "Cross-border acquiring where the business address of the merchant is outside of the jurisdiction of the acquiring Stripe entity, unless permitted under the card network rules"8Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, Prohibited uses of Stripe products, last updated September 22, 2026, read November 2, 2026.

What Stripe verifies on a US account with a non-US owner

The same review as any US business, with ID documents instead of SSN digits. Stripe's US verification rules7Stripe Support, 2024 updates to US verification requirements FAQ, read October 27, 2026:

PersonWith an SSNNon-US person without an SSN
RepresentativeLast 4 digits of SSN or ITIN at onboardingNational ID or verification document at onboarding
OwnersLast 4 digits once volume exceeds $500,000National ID or verification document once volume exceeds $500,000

The representative and owners you declare must be the people who run and own the business. What happens when Stripe asks for more documents: Stripe account restricted.

Lines not to cross

Stripe's "Prohibited uses" apply to every account, whatever the country8Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, Prohibited uses of Stripe products, last updated September 22, 2026, read November 2, 2026:

If you file the EIN yourself instead of through Atlas, the IRS lets a responsible party without an SSN write "foreign" on line 7b of Form SS-4, but not apply online11IRS, Instructions for Form SS-4, read October 27, 2026. The full procedure: US merchant accounts for non-US owners.

Frequently asked questions

Can a non-US resident use Stripe?

Yes, if the business is set up in a country Stripe supports. Stripe lists 51 countries and regions. To open an account in a country other than your own, you need a legal entity, tax ID, address, phone, ID, website and a physical bank account there. A US company through Stripe Atlas is another route.

Is Stripe Atlas available to non-US founders?

Yes. Stripe says you can apply "from almost anywhere in the world". Atlas forms a Delaware LLC or C corporation for US$500, then US$100 a year. It doesn't guarantee approval for Stripe payments and refuses restricted business categories.

How long does Atlas take to get an EIN without an SSN?

Stripe says 10 to 35 business days after incorporation, against 1 to 2 business days for a founder with a US SSN, US address and US phone. Meanwhile, you can take US card payments, with payouts capped at US$100,000 until the EIN arrives.

Can I open a Stripe account in a country where I don't live?

Yes, with a business that really exists there: a registered entity, tax ID, physical address, phone number and a physical, non-virtual bank account in that country. Stripe prohibits cross-border acquiring where your business address is outside the acquiring Stripe entity's jurisdiction, unless card network rules permit it.

Do I need an SSN to use Stripe in the US?

No. A non-US representative without an SSN provides a national ID or a verification document at onboarding, and owners do the same once payments volume exceeds $500,000.
