Shopify Payments Closed or Deactivated Your Account: Funds and Next Steps

Shopify Payments closed or deactivated your account: what happens to your funds and disputes, how to appeal, and how to keep selling on Shopify.

Article summary

TL;DR

When Shopify Payments deactivates your account, your store usually stays open but can't take cards through Shopify Payments. Funds not needed for chargebacks, refunds or fees are paid out under the processor's terms; there's no fixed date. Appeal through the email, keep the store active to answer disputes, and connect a third-party provider to keep selling.

  • Shopify may close a Shopify Payments account "at any time, for any reason, upon notice to you".
  • After termination, "a Payment Processor may elect to continue to hold any funds deemed necessary" for chargebacks, disputes, fees and refunds.
  • Closing Shopify Payments "will not necessarily terminate" your store's platform terms; a restored store can still be refused Shopify Payments.
  • Disputes on earlier orders can still be settled through Shopify's dispute program, with a fee each, after termination.
  • On Shopify, "only one credit card payment provider" can be active at a time, with a fee of 0.2% to 2% per order on a third-party provider.

Why Shopify deactivates Shopify Payments

Usually after a risk review. Shopify reviews accounts at onboarding and "continuously" afterward; if a review finds elevated risk, the account "might be declined, deactivated, or subject to restrictions"1Shopify Help Center, Acceptable business practices and risk evaluation for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026. In severe cases, "your payouts might be suspended or your ability to process charges through Shopify Payments might be deactivated"1Shopify Help Center, Acceptable business practices and risk evaluation for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026.

What the review looks at1Shopify Help Center, Acceptable business practices and risk evaluation for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026:

AreaExamples Shopify gives
Account and complianceInvalid tax information, address mismatches, ownership that can't be verified
Practices and customer experienceProduct claims, counterfeit goods, delivery gaps, subscription terms and cancellation, pre-selected enrollments
CredibilityFake reviews or testimonials, unverifiable certifications or press claims
Transactions and operationsChargeback rates and trends, refunds, fulfillment, sudden volume increases, history of your other businesses

The terms add three grounds for suspension or termination: risk "including, without limitation, significant credit or fraud risk", a breach of the terms or network rules, or a request from "the Payment Network, a Payment Processor, or a provider of Payment Methods including a Card issuer"2Shopify Payments Terms of Service, Part I, sections B (Prohibited and Restricted Businesses), C (Reserves) and D (Termination, Effects of Termination), no date shown, read November 3, 2026.

Your category can also be the reason: prohibited and restricted businesses are "provided by each Payment Processor"2Shopify Payments Terms of Service, Part I, sections B (Prohibited and Restricted Businesses), C (Reserves) and D (Termination, Effects of Termination), no date shown, read November 3, 2026. See Shopify Payments prohibited products.

What happens to your funds

You don't get everything on the day of the email. Two clauses decide2Shopify Payments Terms of Service, Part I, sections B (Prohibited and Restricted Businesses), C (Reserves) and D (Termination, Effects of Termination), no date shown, read November 3, 2026:

  • What you're owed is paid out, on the processor's terms. "Any funds in the Financial Services Provider's custody will be paid out to you subject to the Payment Processor Terms."
  • What may be needed is kept. "A Payment Processor may elect to continue to hold any funds deemed necessary, pending resolution of any other terms or obligations ... including, but not limited to, chargebacks, disputes, fees, refunds, or other investigations or proceedings."

The processor is Stripe, PayPal or Adyen depending on your region6Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026. Shopify's terms set no fixed holding period. The 120 days merchants often quote match the reserve examples on Shopify's help pages, which are examples, not a rule12Shopify Help Center, Overview of reserves in Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026.

Watch out

The hold can end with nothing to pay. A merchant posted on the Shopify Community in July 2024 that, after waiting 120 days, Shopify's risk team replied: "The balance of your Shopify Payments account is in the negative for -$1,397.76 due to chargebacks"13Shopify Community, merchant thread on a payout after 120 days, July 22, 2024. If refunds and disputes exceed what's held, you owe the difference2Shopify Payments Terms of Service, Part I, sections B (Prohibited and Restricted Businesses), C (Reserves) and D (Termination, Effects of Termination), no date shown, read November 3, 2026.

The terms also say you earn no interest on reserved funds and have "no legal interest" in them while held2Shopify Payments Terms of Service, Part I, sections B (Prohibited and Restricted Businesses), C (Reserves) and D (Termination, Effects of Termination), no date shown, read November 3, 2026.

Chargebacks after the end

They don't stop when Shopify Payments does. Cardholders can still dispute orders you processed before the deactivation.

How to appeal

Use the route the email gives you. Shopify points deactivated merchants to its store termination appeal process, and declined applicants to reapplication1Shopify Help Center, Acceptable business practices and risk evaluation for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026.

  2. Use the appeal form or prompt it points to. In the admin, the appeal form asks for explanations and supporting documents3Shopify Help Center, Handling your Shopify store termination, read November 3, 2026.
  3. Answer the reason, not the decision. Show what you changed: product pages, subscription terms, fulfillment times, refund handling1Shopify Help Center, Acceptable business practices and risk evaluation for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026.
  4. Add proof: tracking for recent orders, dispute and refund figures, supplier invoices, your policies.
  5. If your store came back but payments didn't, "submit a separate appeal specifically for Shopify Payments access"3Shopify Help Center, Handling your Shopify store termination, read November 3, 2026.
  6. Don't wait to sell. Activate a third-party provider while the appeal runs1Shopify Help Center, Acceptable business practices and risk evaluation for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026.

Keep selling on Shopify

Your store can run on another card provider. Shopify's own next step for a declined or deactivated account is to "activate a third-party payment provider to continue processing transactions in your store"1Shopify Help Center, Acceptable business practices and risk evaluation for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026.

MATCH and getting back on Shopify Payments

A closure can follow you to the next processor. When a processing relationship ends, the processor must check Mastercard's MATCH criteria and, if met, add the business "within one business day of termination"7Shopify Help Center, Fraud and dispute monitoring programs, read November 3, 2026.

Code 4 covers Mastercard chargebacks above 1% of sales in a month and $5,000 or more; listings stay five years7Shopify Help Center, Fraud and dispute monitoring programs, read November 3, 2026. Shopify "generally can't process for businesses listed on MATCH"7Shopify Help Center, Fraud and dispute monitoring programs, read November 3, 2026.

Coming back is possible after a declined application. Shopify's reapplication guide asks for8Shopify Help Center, Reapplying for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026:

  • 6 to 12 consecutive months on a third-party gateway after the rejection.
  • A chargeback rate below 1% over that period, with proof.
  • Prompt fulfillment with tracking, and clear customer communication.
  • Clean account standing: pending balances cleared, no negative balance.

With no Shopify Payments chargebacks and at least 4 months since the rejection, an early review "might" be possible, and an approved account can get a reserve8Shopify Help Center, Reapplying for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Shopify Payments deactivate my account?

Usually after a risk review. Shopify looks at product claims, delivery times, subscription terms, reviews, chargeback and refund rates, and your other businesses. Its terms also allow termination for credit or fraud risk, breached rules, or a request from a card network, processor or issuer. The email states the reason or the next step.

How long does Shopify hold funds after deactivation?

Shopify's terms set no fixed period. The processor can keep funds it deems necessary for chargebacks, refunds, fees or investigations, then pays out the rest under its own terms. Merchants often report about 120 days, the figure in Shopify's reserve examples, but disputes can reduce or wipe out what's left.

Can I keep my Shopify store without Shopify Payments?

Usually, yes. Ending Shopify Payments doesn't necessarily end your store's platform terms, and Shopify suggests activating a third-party payment provider. Only one card provider can be active at a time, and Shopify adds a fee of 0.2% to 2% per order depending on your plan.

Can I appeal a Shopify Payments deactivation?

Yes, through the route in the email. Shopify points deactivated accounts to its termination appeal form, where you send explanations and documents. If your store is restored but Shopify Payments isn't, file a separate appeal for Shopify Payments access. Shopify publishes no timeline for the decision.

Can I reapply for Shopify Payments later?

After a declined application, yes. Shopify asks for 6 to 12 consecutive months on a third-party gateway with a chargeback rate below 1%, prompt fulfillment with tracking, and no pending or negative balance. Meeting these doesn't guarantee approval, and an approved account can receive a reserve.
