Shopify Payments Payouts on Hold: Causes and Fixes

Why Shopify Payments put your payouts on hold: the nine kinds of hold and delay, what Shopify says about each, and how to get paid.

Article summary

TL;DR

Shopify Payments holds payouts when it needs information, can't verify your bank account, reviews your account, or sees a risk such as disputes or product eligibility. Your store keeps running and customers can usually still pay. Shopify publishes no duration: the hold ends when you send what the email or admin notice asks for.

  • Shopify names information requirements, incorrect bank details and product eligibility as common causes, plus supportability, sanctions and creditor actions.
  • "You can't receive payouts through Shopify Payments until the reason for the hold is resolved".
  • A new payout bank account pauses payouts for 3 to 5 business days; switching to Shopify Balance doesn't.
  • Higher-risk accounts can be put on a custom schedule of 5 to 20 business days, which support "can't shorten" on request.
  • A creditor hold can only be removed by the payment processor, after a release from the creditor.

First, how long a normal payout takes

Check that it's a hold, not normal timing. In the US, Shopify Payments lists a minimum settlement time of 3 business days, with no minimum payout amount2Shopify Help Center, Understanding Shopify Payments payout timing, read November 3, 2026. Banks then need "approximately 1-3 business days" to show the funds2Shopify Help Center, Understanding Shopify Payments payout timing, read November 3, 2026.

Payouts to Shopify Balance can arrive "within 1 business day", and new merchants can wait "up to 5 business days"2Shopify Help Center, Understanding Shopify Payments payout timing, read November 3, 2026. Account holds

These are the holds Shopify describes as account specific, and the most common notice. Shopify's reasons1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026:

Watch out

"Shopify can't remove this type of hold"1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026. For a creditor hold, contact the creditor and, if needed, independent legal counsel. Only the processor lifts it, once the creditor sends a release.

Selling diamonds, gold, watches, jewelry, art or designer goods can trigger a high-value goods review. You complete a questionnaire in the admin, or remove those products. Miss the date and you need another payment provider1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026.

Account reviews

A review can hold payouts even when no information is missing. Shopify lists what can prompt one2Shopify Help Center, Understanding Shopify Payments payout timing, read November 3, 2026:

  • Chargeback disputes.
  • Compliance checks or possible violations of the Shopify Payments terms.
  • Customer complaints.
  • High-risk orders.
  • "Fraud or compliance investigations by our financial partners."
  • Fulfillment issues.
  • Onboarding that requires more documents or verification.

Shopify evaluates risk continuously, against a standard it calls higher than the card networks' thresholds6Shopify Help Center, Acceptable business practices and risk evaluation for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026. Bank account changes and failed payouts

These are mechanical, and you can end them yourself.

A new bank account. Changing your payout destination, or adding an account more than 24 hours after setup, pauses payouts "for 3-5 business days" while Shopify verifies it2Shopify Help Center, Understanding Shopify Payments payout timing, read November 3, 2026. The pause doesn't apply when you switch to Shopify Balance. With Multi-Currency Payouts, one change can pause payouts to all your accounts2Shopify Help Center, Understanding Shopify Payments payout timing, read November 3, 2026. A payout already in transit still goes to the old account3Shopify Help Center, Navigating your Shopify Payments payouts to resolve lower or missing payouts, read November 3, 2026.

A failed payout. The bank rejected it: wrong account number, no account, currency mismatch, a savings account, or a name that doesn't match4Shopify Help Center, Failed Shopify Payments payouts, read November 3, 2026. "A payout failure can lead to an immediate payout hold, or a hold after multiple consecutive failures"4Shopify Help Center, Failed Shopify Payments payouts, read November 3, 2026. Update the details and retry from the Payouts page.

Where payouts can be withdrawn from your bank, a negative payout that fails is "attempted two additional times before payouts to that bank account are paused"4Shopify Help Center, Failed Shopify Payments payouts, read November 3, 2026.

Reserves, custom schedules and a negative balance

These three don't stop payouts. They make them smaller or later.

The terms add one more lever. Shopify can collect what you owe from a reserve, from funds payable to you, or by charging your payment method on file7Shopify Payments Terms of Service, Part I, sections C (Our Collection Rights, Reserves) and D (Effects of Termination), no date shown, read November 3, 2026.

Can customers still pay?

Usually, yes. "In most cases, your customers can still check out if your payouts are on hold, however, you won't be paid out for the orders until the hold is resolved"1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026. In some cases, the store "can't accept new orders": the admin banner or the owner's email says which applies1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026.

Only the store owner can see account details and resolve a hold; staff see a generic prompt1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026. To check the owner's address, go to Settings > Users and permissions and click the name under Store owner1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026.

Watch out

Check that the email is real before you click or send bank details. Shopify points merchants to its guidance on phishing, vishing and smishing for exactly this case1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026.

How to get paid

  1. Read the admin banner and the owner's email, spam folder included. They name the hold1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026.
  2. Send exactly what's asked, and reply to the email. Shopify calls this "the fastest way to resolve a hold"1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026.
  3. Fix bank details if a payout failed, then retry it4Shopify Help Center, Failed Shopify Payments payouts, read November 3, 2026.
  4. Answer chargebacks on time so lost disputes don't push the balance negative2Shopify Help Center, Understanding Shopify Payments payout timing, read November 3, 20268Shopify Help Center, Chargebacks and inquiries, read November 3, 2026.
  5. Contact Shopify Support only if the notice gives too little information1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read November 3, 2026.
  6. Keep the store active. If you deactivate it, you can't fix a failed payout or "respond to chargebacks after your store is closed"2Shopify Help Center, Understanding Shopify Payments payout timing, read November 3, 2026.
  7. If the hold is long, add another payment provider for new sales. On Shopify, one card provider can be active at a time: see migrating away from Shopify Payments.

Based on Shopify Help Center, Account holds, Payout timing and Failed payouts, read November 3, 2026.

In severe cases, Shopify can suspend payouts or deactivate charges6Shopify Help Center, Acceptable business practices and risk evaluation for Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026. That's a closure, not a hold: Shopify Payments closed or deactivated your account.

Plan cash around a hold

Budget with the slowest money you have. A held balance rarely comes back in one block.

each part on its own clock

Illustrative example: one Shopify Payments account with three holds at once.

In this example, $5,000 waits out a bank change pause, $10,000 is released once a document request is answered, and $12,000 sits in a reserve until its expiry date. Plan stock and ad spend on the last date, not the first.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my Shopify Payments payouts on hold?

Shopify names missing information, incorrect bank details and product eligibility as common reasons, along with unsupported business models, sanctions and creditor actions. A review can also hold payouts after disputes, complaints or high-risk orders. The banner in your admin and the email to the store owner state which applies and what to send.

How long does Shopify hold payouts?

Shopify publishes no duration for an account hold: it lasts until the reason is resolved. Some delays have set times: 3 to 5 business days after a bank change, 5 to 20 business days per payout on a custom schedule. A reserve runs until its expiry date, then Shopify reviews it.

Can customers still buy while my payouts are on hold?

In most cases, yes. Shopify says customers can usually still check out, but you won't be paid for those orders until the hold is resolved. In some cases the store can't accept new orders. The admin banner or the owner's email tells you whether your checkout is affected.

Why is my payout lower than expected?

Check the payout details. Refunds, chargebacks and their fees, processing fees, currency conversion, a negative balance and reserves all reduce a payout. A hold can also be partial, keeping back only the funds linked to certain transactions. Export the payout's transactions to see amount, fee and net per line.

Can Shopify keep my money?

It can hold it, and use it for what you owe. The terms let Shopify collect obligations from a reserve or from funds payable to you. After a termination, a processor can keep funds it deems necessary for chargebacks, refunds or investigations. What's not needed is paid out under the processor's terms.
