Shopify Payments and High-Risk Subscriptions: What Is Allowed

Shopify Payments takes subscriptions within its processors' lists: what's banned, what Shopify's tools cover, reserve triggers, which gateways work.

Article summary

TL;DR

Yes, Shopify Payments takes subscriptions, and Shopify offers its own Subscriptions app. In the US it has no list of its own: it applies its processors' lists, and Stripe's prohibits "negative option marketing" and trials "with unclear or hidden pricing". A subscription with clear terms and easy cancellation is allowed. Long billing cycles and rising disputes are what bring reserves.

  • Shopify Payments' US terms say prohibited categories "are provided by each Payment Processor"; for the US, its list names Stripe and PayPal.
  • Stripe's list, updated September 22, 2026, prohibits "Negative option marketing, negative option membership clubs, and reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing".
  • Shopify names "Businesses with extended billing cycles", such as annual subscriptions, among reasons for a reserve.
  • Since June 22, 2026, Shopify shows a default subscription disclosure at checkout unless you customized it.
  • Shopify Subscriptions works with five gateways; Stripe is "Available only to select merchants".

Whose rules apply

Three layers, and the strictest one decides. Shopify's terms allow prohibited categories to come "by Shopify", by law, by card network rules or from a processor's partners1Shopify Payments Terms of Service (US), Part I sections A5, B5 and C5, read November 3, 2026.

What Shopify's subscription tools do, and what Visa asks

Shopify covers part of the disclosure for you. The rest is your offer and your emails.

What each message does

  1. Trial notice: 7 days before the paid period, as Visa requires. Send it from your app or email tool.
  2. Renewal reminder: Shopify Subscriptions sends this one, 3 days before the charge.
  3. Statement line: a name the customer recognizes, so the charge isn't disputed as unknown.

Your MCC and network registration

Physical goods sold on subscription through direct marketing fall under Visa's MCC 5968, which Visa lists among its high-risk codes for card-absent sales11Visa, Merchant Data Standards Manual, April 2026. Mastercard requires registration for negative option merchants selling at a distance and imposes MCC 5968 on them12Mastercard, Security Rules and Procedures, Merchant Edition, section 9.4.10, February 11, 2025. Your offer decides the code. More: MCC 5968.

What gets subscription stores reviewed on Shopify Payments

Mostly the billing cycle and the disputes. Shopify's reserve page names the patterns5Shopify Help Center, Reserves on Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026.

Shopify says extended billing cycles are "particularly vulnerable to disputes from customers", and gives "annual subscriptions" as the example5Shopify Help Center, Reserves on Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026. Its terms also let it enroll you in dispute programs if it sees "an elevated risk of chargebacks or disputes"1Shopify Payments Terms of Service (US), Part I sections A5, B5 and C5, read November 3, 2026. Where the thresholds sit: Shopify Payments chargebacks. How long reserves last: Shopify Payments reserve.

Watch out

"Before a reserve expires, your account is reviewed to determine whether to keep, reduce, or raise the reserve"5Shopify Help Center, Reserves on Shopify Payments, read November 3, 2026. Subscriptions keep billing during that time, so disputes on old orders still count.

If Shopify Payments won't take your subscriptions

You can stay on Shopify with another gateway, if your subscription app supports it. Shopify Subscriptions lists five9Shopify Help Center, Shopify Subscriptions app eligibility considerations, read November 3, 2026:

GatewayWhat Shopify says
Shopify PaymentsAutomatic card updates "reduce payment failures or declines"
PayPal Express"Third-party transaction fees are charged if Shopify Payments isn't activated on your store."
Authorize.net"Google Pay and Apple Pay aren't supported."
Adyen"limited to organizations with an existing Adyen approval"
Stripe"Available only to select merchants."

A third-party card provider adds a Shopify fee of 2% on Basic down to 0.2% on Plus14Shopify pricing, third-party payment provider fees, read October 26, 2026. Moving existing subscribers has a catch: if Shop Pay is turned off, Shop Pay subscriptions "will fail" and are canceled after several attempts13Shopify Help Center, Deactivating Shop Pay, read November 3, 2026. The full process: migrate away from Shopify Payments.

Retries on the new gateway follow Visa's limit: up to 20 attempts in 30 days, and none after a category 1 decline15Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, sections 1.7.2.1 and 7.3.6.3, edition October 24, 2026. Codes one by one: Shopify Payments declined payments.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify Payments allow subscriptions?

Yes. Shopify offers its own Subscriptions app and supports third-party subscription apps. In the US, Shopify Payments applies Stripe's and PayPal's lists, so negative option marketing and trials with hidden pricing are prohibited. Your products must also fit Shopify's eligibility page.

Are subscriptions high risk on Shopify Payments?

Not by default, but Shopify names extended billing cycles, such as annual subscriptions, among reasons for a reserve, along with elevated chargebacks, rising refunds and volume surges. A monthly plan with clear terms and low disputes reads differently from a prepaid annual plan sold with a trial.

Can I offer free trials with Shopify Payments?

Yes, if the price after the trial is clear. Stripe's list, which Shopify Payments applies in the US, targets trials "with unclear or hidden pricing". Visa also asks for a notice at least 7 days before the trial ends, which Shopify's 3-day renewal reminder doesn't replace.

Does Shopify Subscriptions send renewal reminders?

Yes. Shopify Subscriptions emails customers 3 days before each recurring order is charged. Subscriptions run by a third-party app follow that app's schedule. Customers can also skip, pause or cancel from their account, and a cancellation ends billing and delivery immediately.

Which payment gateways work with Shopify Subscriptions?

Five: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen and Stripe. Adyen needs an existing Adyen approval, Stripe is available only to select merchants, and Authorize.net doesn't support Apple Pay or Google Pay. If you use a third-party subscription app, check its own list too.
