Checkout A/B Testing: What to Test and How to Read the Result

Checkout A/B testing: what to test first, where the split happens, the metric that decides, sample sizes for checkout tests, Shopify Rollouts limits.

Article summary

TL;DR

Checkout A/B testing splits buyers who reach checkout between two versions and compares paid orders. Test what changes the purchase first: payment methods, the order bump, the upsell, guest checkout and shipping display. Size the test on checkout sessions, run full weeks, and decide on revenue per visitor after refunds, with approvals and disputes as guardrails.

  • Shopify runs checkout experiments through Rollouts, on the Grow plan or higher, with a 50/50 split by default.
  • A Shopify checkout experiment reports one metric, checkout conversion rate; headless and custom storefront checkouts can't be tested with Rollouts.
  • Checking a test after every visitor and stopping at the first significant result raised false positives from 5% to 26.1% in Evan Miller's example (2010).
  • For SEO, Google asks for rel="canonical" on variant URLs, 302 redirects rather than 301, and no cloaking.
  • 10% of US shoppers who abandoned a checkout left after a declined card, and 9% for lack of payment methods: both are testable.

What to test in a checkout, in order

Start with what changes what people pay, not the button color. Each test has one metric that decides and one guardrail that can veto it.

Baymard's abandonment reasons show where to look first: 40% of abandoners cite extra costs, 18% a forced account, 17% a checkout too long8Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025. The offers in detail: order bumps, one-click upsells and one-page vs multi-step checkout.

Where the split happens

Four places, and the checkout narrows the choice. Many checkouts don't let a testing script run on the payment page, so the split has to happen before the page loads.

Fig. 1Three checks before you pick the method

  1. Can the page run your script?

If not, a browser-side tool can't touch the payment page. Split before the page loads.

  2. Does a visitor keep their version?

The same buyer must see the same version on every visit, or the result mixes both.

  3. Does it count paid orders?

The tool has to see the payment, not just the click on the pay button.

the checkout usually decides for you

Pick the metric before the test

Write it down before launch. A checkout test that "wins" on clicks can lose money on refunds or declines.

Shopify's own checkout experiments use the first one: "Online store sessions with completed purchases relative to the visits that reached checkout"3Shopify Help Center, Rollout analytics, read November 3, 2026. More on it: payment conversion rate.

How much traffic a checkout test needs

Less than a site-wide test, because checkout conversion is high. The closer you test to the payment, the fewer visitors you need.

Source: Our calculation, standard two-proportion sample size

testing at checkout needs a tenth of the traffic

Two-proportion test, 95% confidence, 80% power. Our calculation.

Example

45% of the visitors who reach your checkout pay. To detect a lift to 47.25% (5% relative), you need about 7,700 checkout sessions per version. At 500 checkout sessions a day split 50/50, that's about a month. The same 10% lift measured on all site visitors at a 2% conversion rate needs about 80,700 sessions per version.

The formula and why you can't stop early: what A/B testing is.

Run it cleanly

  1. Write the hypothesis, the metric and the guardrail before launch.
  2. Size the sample on checkout sessions, and set the end date.
  3. Keep each buyer on one version for the whole test, including return visits.
  4. Run full weeks, so weekdays and weekends weigh the same in both versions.
  5. Check the split halfway: a 50/50 test that shows 55/45 has a bug, not a winner.
  6. Decide at the planned end, on the metric, then wait for refunds before you call an offer test.
  7. Roll out the winner, then test the next change, one at a time.

One test from hypothesis to rollout.

Repeated significance testing always increases the rate of false positives

Evan Miller, How Not To Run an A/B Test, April 18, 2010

In his example, a test checked after every visitor and stopped at the first significant result at a 5% threshold produced false positives 26.1% of the time6Evan Miller, How Not To Run an A/B Test, April 18, 2010. Set the end date first, and keep it.

Testing payment methods and routing

Payment tests answer a real question: which setup gets more buyers paid. Judge them on approved payments, and watch disputes.

Fig. 3Payment tests and what can veto them

  1. Wallets above the card formPaid orders per checkout sessionFewer card payments approved
  2. A buy now, pay later optionRevenue per visitorHigher refund rate
  3. Processor A vs processor B, weightedApproval rateMore disputes or fraud
  4. Cascade to a second processor after a timeout or processor blockRecovered paymentsBank declines sent to the second processor

a payment test is decided on approvals, not clicks

Illustrative example.

A decline by the card's bank is never sent to the other processor: Visa forbids changing the acquirer, the MCC or the country to resubmit it (Core Rules §1.7.2.1, October 24, 2026 edition)11Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, §1.7.2.1. Never split traffic to keep a processor under a dispute or fraud threshold either: the test is about approvals, not where problems land.

Which methods to offer: payment methods for high-risk merchants. Declines and retries: declined payments.

A/B tests and SEO

Checkout pages are rarely indexed, but landing pages in a test are. Google's rules are short7Google Search Central, Minimize A/B testing impact in Google Search, read November 3, 2026:

  • No cloaking: don't show Googlebot one set of URLs and visitors another.
  • rel="canonical" on every variant URL, pointing to the original.
  • 302, not 301, when you redirect visitors to a variant.
  • End the test: remove variants and testing scripts once it's over.

Frequently asked questions

Can you A/B test the Shopify checkout?

Yes, through Rollouts, on the Grow plan or higher. An experiment compares two checkout and accounts configurations, splits 50/50 by default and reports checkout conversion rate. Headless and custom storefront checkouts can't be tested with Rollouts, and apps on the payment page need Shopify Plus.

What should I A/B test on my checkout first?

What changes what people pay: the order of payment methods and wallets, the order bump, guest checkout, and how shipping cost is shown. Baymard's data points there: 40% of abandoners cite extra costs and 18% a forced account. Leave colors and button copy for later.

How long should a checkout A/B test run?

Until it reaches the sample size you set before launch, and in full weeks, two at least. At a 45% checkout conversion rate, detecting a 5% relative lift needs about 7,700 checkout sessions per version. Don't stop when the result first looks significant: that raises false positives well above the level you set.

What metric should decide a checkout test?

Paid orders per checkout session for most layout and payment tests, and revenue per visitor after refunds for offers and prices. Add guardrails that can veto a winner: approval rate on payment tests, refunds and disputes on offer tests. A version that sells more but gets refunded more has not won.

Can I A/B test payment processors?

You can split payments between two processors by weight and compare approval rates, with disputes and fraud as guardrails. Keep the split for comparing approvals. Don't send a payment the card's bank declined to the other processor, and don't use a split to keep one processor under a dispute or fraud threshold.

Does A/B testing hurt SEO?

Not if you follow Google's rules: no cloaking, rel="canonical" on variant URLs pointing to the original, 302 rather than 301 redirects, and the test removed once it ends. Checkout pages are rarely indexed; the rules matter most for landing pages in a test.
